Another great craftsman. I love his attitude towards the ever changing world: traditions are most important but we must adapt to the flowing world. Wax has changed? Change techniques, but do not change the spirit. I also love how he speaks of passing down the skills and techniques. I am always worried that such wonderful skills are going to disappear in future. Thank you for making this video.

What is the piece? And why the inverted pyramid in the bottom? Unbelievable craftsmanship!
@kodawari.official11 ай бұрын
It's a Go board. He makes the boards used when playing Go. The purpose of the inverted pyramid is to prevent the wood from bending and to improve the sound when the pieces are hit! Thank you for your comment!

Does anyone know what kind of wood it is?
@kodawari.official Жыл бұрын
It is a tree called Kaya. The scientific name is Torreya nucifera.
@RossNanfito Жыл бұрын
@@kodawari.official Does that tree only grow in Japan? Is the wood from it milled and exported? I live in USA. I've never seen it here.
@rubbercrutch1 Жыл бұрын
Kaya is Japanese yew. Wood Database says that we have a pacific yew over here but it appears to be a little darker than its neighbor in Japan. It’s a very dense softwood.

This is listed $3500usd online. A used one that looks to be 20+ years old similar with the pyramid center is $275 on Ebay. How can this business sell enough of these to pay the bills? Does Japan not charge them lots of taxes or insurances and is the cost of living lower than we think?
@kodawari.official11 ай бұрын
Many products are sold in Asia, where demand is high. We have not only high-priced items, but also low-priced items. You can earn a living by doing work such as repairing Go and Shogi boards.

By making a ``belly button'', you can prevent the tree from bending! Also, the sound when you place the pieces will be better!

Please explain why so much wood should be wasted on a game board? I respect the work of the craftsman, but this piece of wood could make four (if not more) thin game boards and they would be no worse (or maybe even better, because then they could be taken with you).
