ngl, giving a character based on dolls where the gimmick is their tininess the power to shrink is incredibly good concept design. It sounds like the new series is in good writers' hands.

As an American I must say, someone with pollys wealth would have already been at boarding school by default. It’s almost unheard of to have children of wealth enroll in public school. But yeah for some reason the trope of sending your children off to boarding/military school (usually as a punishment) is a lot more common in media than it is in real life here in the states. I don’t really understand it or why it came to be.
@13time
@13time 3 жыл бұрын
I mean theres just privite school also in some wealthy areas the public schools are just really nice. So I would not say boarding school is the norm but also sending your kid to milltary school is not that wild I know a few kids who were sent there and they were not even bad kids.
@13time

My younger sister finally got enrolled in boarding school because 1: Expensive as hell 2: They only accept a certain type of kid and middle class nobody wasn't it 3: They can be incredibly abusive to the children We finally got her into a good one because of a court order. I won't detail what she did to be sent to boarding school but it's VERY difficult and you can't just ship off someone else's kid

late reply, but i have a few theories about why this is such a common trope in fiction: 1) it minimizes adult interference. sure, there are teachers, and schedules that dictate where they can go and when, but ultimately these stories generally focus on found family and their relationship with their friends. parents can still be involved, or even antagonizing, but they aren’t generally a focus. 2) a sort of wish fulfillment. as the comment above me states, real life boarding schools aren’t typically friendly places to be. but made up ones can seem much more appealing than waking up at home and going to regular school for a young audience. it seems glamorous and exciting to have a freedom not known to most people under 18. there’s new challenges, sure, but they’re much different from their real life and therefore still seem appealing 3) simply following trends. especially in the late 90s and early 2000s, there was a boom in media set in boarding schools, and the more of those that were successful, the more that were made. 4) as a shorthand for a Scary Place you don’t want to end up, basically the opposite of wish fulfillment. it’s basically a maguffin Bad Thing, rather similar to nebulously having to move from one place to another as The Worst Thing that could happen. kid friendly easy drama, really

Surprised you didn't mention the 2010 3d animated polly pocket series, in which polly is retooled to be a energetic fashionista jock who is obsessed with extreme sports and is competitive to a fault, bc she was probably my favourite polly incarnation. They also had the larger friendgroup and managed to successfully pull off each girl (and the token boy!) Having their own distinct personality, even if they're a bit obvious (there's the foodie, the techie, the timid shy one, the shallow fashion one, etc -basically mlp but if applejack was the main character)

Idk how available it is nowadays, but I remember coming across a 3D animated pollypocket “movie” (it was short) on one of the websites. All I remember about it was that they went to the villain’s house (she was a twist villain I think). She tells them that she won tons of awards for world records and stuff, but when Polly and friends start to turn on her, they look at her trophy collection and find that her world records are in stuff like watching the most TV. Basically they say the awards she earned weren’t real because they were all based on lazy activities (lol). Anyone else remember this?

My sisters and I used to rent this movie from our local library. While not as memorable as the Barbie movies, it was still a fun time. Strangely enough, I kinda sorta found Beth relatable. Not in her actions, obviously, but because of her motive to have all the cool things Polly has and to be taken seriously. IDK, Beth was a vibe and I got it. Also, who else had that Pollyworld CD that was given away in a Burger King promotion? I still have my copy and I've been chilling to 'Work the Angles' to this day.

I went to Boarding School in New Zealand, but only for ages 16-18 and was because we had to move Cities when my Dad got transferred to head office. Now I was lucking in the Boarding School was only 45minute drive away from my new home, So I got to go home every other weekend (school rules prevented it from being every weekend). Unlike many who could only visit home on the holidays breaks. And that why it A scary threat to kids, It cuts them off from the emotional support of being able to see your parents every day. And replaces it with an adult (House Master) that has to look after an entire year group or more, and a maybe mature enough Dorm Prefect (a senior student). And this was before kids having cellphones so all the house hand to share a single land line that was in a public place so limiting the ability to have private talk with your parents.

Boarding School is a place where the saying "It's easier to ask forgiveness than permission" is dead wrong. With soo few adults per kid the rule haves default to restrictive and has to be strictly enforced simplify to keep everyone safe. It also why asking permission is often easily because the adult will at least know what you're doing a head of time. But they will cut you no slack for breaking the rule on your own.

Why is Polly's family so rich? Did her ancestors invent pocket by any chances?

I was mainly exposed to Polly Pocket with the 2018 series, and it's quite enjoyable. Having the involvement of Shea Fontana (who worked on the 2015 DC Superhero Girls) helps out. Though the show does change quite a bit from sesson 2 onward, with not many people liking the changes. Granted, i think the show is still good.

If they wanted to make her rich they could have just focus on how being rich isn't everything

I think it helps that Barbie is an adult, because no matter how rich they make Polly, it's still limiting to be a teen. But with Barbie, the creators can literally put her into any situation and there's no question about school or schedules or if she's supposed to be there. They tried to approach Polly as if she was Barbie, when they should've focused on something smaller. It seems like they have with the new show.

Both Polly Pocket and Barbie were those girls that just had the most perfect lives that everyone else just dreamed of having. Only Barbie had actual careers and is much older and mature while Polly is just a rich kid. I loved both franchises equally but in terms of movies I liked Barbie, but in terms of toys, it has to be Polly. I loved playing with miniature playsets more and, honestly, what kid didn't try to eat the Polly Pocket clothes?

I had played with Polly pocket toys when I was younger but I mostly played with Barbie like most girls at the time. As well as recently a few months or so back watched the Polly pocket movies plus I really enjoy the Polly pocket reboot series.
