asimplyfab.life/ This one is super easy! And super cheap as well! From a leaking axle drive flange to some serious bling in ten minutes per side. The Defender rear-axle drive flange kit from Terrafirma is well worth the investment. If only to keep the oil INside the axle. Just be sure to order the correct part.
We've all had it before where the dust cap starts leaking and there is a nice film of axle oil radiating out all over the wheel from the centre. Just replace the dust cover, I hear you say... And this works - but not always... Why not 'style some bling' - for a smaller investment than you think - and be done with the cheap plastic driveshaft covers...

i did this 2 weeks ago. Was expecting a 10 minute job also. Little did i know 2 flange bolts broke and was in for an entire day to remove the hub and attempt to drill it out. Tried drilling the bolt out and the cobalt drill bit snapped inside. Welp... turned a day job into a week job waiting for parts from the UK to arrive in Aus. Have learnt my lesson and have replaced the flange bolts with High tensile cap head socket screws. Serves me right for letting a mechanic do my brakes. 🙃

😮 whoa! (I know what you mean trusting 'mechanics' to do the job...)

The terrafirma are better but still soft. We use maxidrive in australia. They are almost a smash on fit..how it should be

This looks nice, but only one thing to notice this is not meant to keep oil in. I had the same problem, caps can keep oil in but problem is eather breathers on axles are blocked or internal seal is gone. Flanges are there to keep shafts but cap is to prevent dirt to come in not to keep oil to come out.

Cheers for that. Good job by the Land Rover 'specialists' for their advice and replacement! (and not shy with the bill!) If you think about it, it makes no sense that a £0.50 piece of plastic is there to keep the oil in.

You will need to use silicone/sealant or something to "glue the cap" because that thing will come off.

@@ASimplyFabLife The oil comes from your Diff. Between your ballbearing an the axis is a sealing. The halfshaft are going through this sealing. The oil is in entire axis up to this seal. Behind the seal there is only grease for the bearing. I had the same disease and that was the Reason for the leak. Take a look at that: new.lrcat.com/#!/1228/7048/7374/669 Sorry for my terrible english.....i try hard :D

Did you do your fronts bud its well worth it!
@ASimplyFabLife
@ASimplyFabLife 2 жыл бұрын
I did not 🙄I agree they are a better option than the standard plastic caps. But the front had some custom 'brackets' keeping the caps on and are leak-free, so I elected to keep going for a bit... Still good so far!😅

Howzit mate, Trial and Trophy is correct, there is an oil seal inside the axle housing which seals against that and onto the drive shaft to keep the differential oil INSIDE the axle casing and diff. And thus keep the bearings only bathed in grease, not mixed with oil from the diff. One point to remember, once you replace that seal, slide the drive shaft in VERY carefully and slowly, taking care not to hurt the seal when it goes in and pressed home, otherwise you start with the same issue again! And lastly, there should be a shiny chromed section on the drive shaft itself -- this is the portion where the oil seal makes its seal -- if this is pitted, rusted or damaged in any way, you need a new shaft as the oil seal WILL eventually be damaged by the damaged shaft and oil leak again! Enjoy the Landy's boet!

Thanks for the info - appreciate it! Will be doing this as soon as I can get the parts (they're cheap and are on order, but Brexit and covid has caused chaos for the shipping agents😬😮) As mentioned a Land Rover Specialist garage helped me out with a front prop shaft and then insisted that the pre-'94 110 only has the dust cap to keep the oil in🧐😊. The wheel was covered in oil when we got back and I was not amused, to put it mildly... Keep rollin'!
