Automakers are racing to fill every niche in the crossover market. The Lexus UX is going for the small premium segment. It’s the brands entry-level vehicle. Tom Voelk drives the all-wheel drive UX 250h which is not only the most powerful UX, it’s the most fuel-efficient too because it’s a hybrid. And there’s no drive shaft to the rear wheels. They’re powered by, well, watch the video and find out.

A couple of things I wanted to clarify about the UX- Kudos to Lexus for the shift lever. It's a standard PRNDL mechanism that's sure and solid when selecting gears (unlike many electronic shift knobs these days). And the seats didn't just look great, they were very supportive and comfortable if not vented. And Evil Twin forgot to mention the back seats are not heated. That guy can't be relied on...

We have the UX200. With mixed driving (including mountains)on a car with only 1000 miles I drove it all day (400 miles) in coastal California and got 33 MPG. We expect 35 mpg down the road. The power is fine and cargo area is fine too for 95% of the time. The interior finish is remarkable. We bought it at $30k new. We LOVE the car!!!

I’m a current Lexus RC owner. I test drove a UX and mostly liked it. I think it looks sexy, it’s comfortable, and does what it’s designed to do. The fuel economy is amazing compared to my RC that ravenously eats up fuel. My only problem with the UX is that it seems like some of the interior materials have been pulled from a Prius? Anyone else notice that? If I’m buying a Lexus, I don’t want an interior made with Prius parts. Outside of that, I can’t say I have any problems with the UX. My feeling is it’s better than competitors in the segment.

Looking forward to the complete interview with the designer. Her explanation so far is excellent ! Having said that , I feel for her having to design a 'crossover'. Its like telling an artist he has to paint in an ugly box. Hopefully the world will tire of crossovers some day and get back to loving autos, sedans, coupés, roadsters, sports cars, and the love of my life, station wagons.

Tom, Let's give Toyota Motor Corporation credit for the Hybrid option and standard safety tech as I am sure teeny tiny people will enjoy those features. Great review! I work at a local Lexus dealer, and I initially hated the back lights, but it has since grown on me. My coworkers were saying that the UX is supposed to be the less expensive car to draw new buyers in. I guess I’d agree with that, but I think the UX is lacking the features we’re used to seeing, like the extra door pockets, air suspension hood and those plastic-y doors. That being said, driving in it is very smooth and comfortable, and I love the look of there interior. Still too much money though!!

The Lexus NX Hybrid is great too! But the regular Lexus NX 2.0 Litre Twin scrolling Turbo is amazing too, and gets nice gas mileage for a mid-sized SUV (30 MPG / 10.8 L/100kms) highway.
@willnye9788
@willnye9788 4 жыл бұрын
I testdrove the UX and for that price it is a tough call depending on what you need. The UX is for mostly young people that need a small vehicle to drive around in the city (we live in a congested city, college students, barely starting a family, etc) and the hybrid with excellent gas mileage, and Lexus/Toyota reliability is a huge plus. The new Rav4 hybrid is great too (I've seen a lot lately) but it's way too big for the city and is mostly a family vehicle which is why the CH-R/UX exists for us successful college students (going for our Masters/PHD) whom live in the city. For the record, I drive a small sub-compact and watched one of the new Rav4s struggle to get into a small parking space on the street...I stole it in a heartbeat 🙌.

hm kind of debating of replacing my CT with this. A higher ground clearance and the awd when I really need it -> lower speed and otherwise gone for higher mpg seems like a good deal to me. Hopefully I will be able to keep my hand out of the cookie jar and wait for new tech. The CT does so well, just abit low, but good for mpg so hey. 2023 is when I hope to buy a new car, fingers crossed for better tech then. And yeah agree the colour and interior are just so damn good.

Is this _really_ different from the old CT? What is the CT, 1/2 inch lower than this? It's a stretch to call the UX an SUV/CUV. Lexus is just doing that because those models sell and "hatchbacks" do not. But it's really the same exact thing, so go ahead and upgrade your CT to this without guilt. It is no less efficient just because the marketing department demanded to class it as a CUV, not a hatchback.

@@davidjym True. Though I'm inclined to believe they're isn't nearly the range of reliability/durability among brands that there was some years ago. It's clear though that Toyota/Lexus believes their reputation for reliability is a huge advantage for the brands and they invest in it heavily. Often to the exclusion of other priorities (e.g. turbocharging, quality interior materials, etc.) I don't mean that as a criticism; I'm simply pointing out that Toyota expects their customers to pay a premium for their reputation for reliability, either in the price or a vehicle or in the cost-cutting that's inevitable in producing a vehicle to a particular price point.

Some of the buildings in Dubai, India are unbelievably nicely made, and there are plenty of other examples of other nationalities that make nice buildings. The architecture of this SUV will not allow me to sit in the back seat because of my height, and it probably should have been considered in the architecture that tall Americans like me will likely sit in the back seat, and that we might want to have more space in the back because Americans tend to have more money, because of more well off financially people like architects need space to load more things in the back.

As an old school GTI owner I have to admit that I resent the designation of this class of vehicles as small crossovers. They're hatchbacks, damn it! Oh well, there's no point debating "marketing speak." And oh yeah, "Get off my lawn!" For $44K I'd go with a Golf R instead (and maybe save a few bucks. Maybe.) And if I wanted to save even more, I'd look at the Mazda3 hatchback in its top trim. Each has a proper AWD system in place of the rather odd version Toyota has come up with for the Prius and the UX. But in either of those cases I'd have to sacrifice the Lexus purchase and owner "experience." Where else can you get a double half-caf latte served while waiting for your car to be serviced? And I'd probably have to sacrifice some reliability. (Though the difference between Toyota/Lexus and other brands has shrunk significantly in recent years. Almost all manufacturers offer far more reliable vehicles than they built a decade or two ago. For the most part, take care of your car and it will be very reliable. The advantage Toyota provides is reliability even when ignored and abused.) The hybrid UX is a plus but while I'm not a performance junkie I think I'd find the UX rather boring to drive. And now I know who was creeping along ahead of me in a UX a couple of weeks ago. Kudos for getting 50 mpg, Tom. Now please get out of the way.
@DrivenCarReviews
@DrivenCarReviews 5 жыл бұрын
If you drove a UX I think you'd find the corning fun on public roads. It's tuned, shall I say, realistically, for a good time. Obviously not a track toy, it's not supposed to be. Maybe that was me creeping along in front of you (though I can tell you the UX is pretty stable at speeds over 75 MPH). I like the idea of the hybrid here since more and more I feel humans need to buy more fuel efficient vehicles. And I agree the margin has shrunk in the past 10-15 years. Statistics support that. Our six year old Kia Soul has been a champ. Nothing but gas and oil and one factory recall for a headliner issue. Same with my Cadillac (rated quite low). After three years of ownership, just one issue with the touchscreen, covered under warranty.

2nd the Golf.:R or an Alltrack SEL or maybe even the GSW SEL with the 1.4t...maybe. A top trim sedan or mazda3 hatch would do circles around this, save you cash, but not get you bonus points at the country club on golf outings.

@@DrivenCarReviews Happy to see you say that about reliability, Tom. I'm often amused/annoyed by troll comments that trash one or another automotive brand based on nothing more than internet rumors, friend of friend anecdotes, or personal experience with a brand years ago. When I was a kid and dinosaurs roamed the freeways a vehicle that lasted a hundred thousand miles was such a rarity that it almost rated a mention in a small town newspaper. Now almost any vehicle can be expected to last more or less intact when the odometer turns over to six figures. Over the last 30 years or so I've had a few (very few) reliability/durability issues in cars I've been careful to service and maintain but I wouldn't claim that Mazdas or Volvos, the brands with which I've had problems, are inherently unreliable. Statistics just don't support a claim like that. And my experience with Hondas, VW's and KIA's over the last decade has been uniform. Virtually no problems at all with any of six vehicles I've owned. As far as hybrids are concerned, I share the concern about finite resources. I won't live to see the world run out of dinosaur juice but I have a 14 y/o daughter who'll face a different world from mine in a few years. And even while oil is still plentiful, the impact on world politics that stems from over-reliance on it is troubling. Personally, I'm most impressed by developments of pure EV vehicles, especially longer range and more affordable offerings. And in the long run hydrogen fuel cell options hold a lot of promise. I haven't made the change yet but I'm considering an extended range Soul EV. And if I lived in California I'd look seriously into Honda's hydrogen fuel cell Clarity. Honda's lease offer coupled with free fuel for 80,000 miles is rather amazing.

So, when is a hatchback not a hatchback? When the marketing dept calls it a 'crossover'. What did it crossover? Knock knock...'who's there?'... "hatchback!"... 'hatchback who?'..."Lexus UX!" They'll build crossover hatchbacks, but not 'regular' car type wagons with the same technology. At this price point, it's better to go loaded, top trim pleabian brand sedan or one of VW's wagons in SEL trim.

A real luxury car would have a true LCD status display, not just a backlit (with a bulb!!!) panel with a cutout for "READY". And I guess we must all continue to beat the now long-dead horse of Lexus/Toyota Infotainment which was obsolete 10 years ago, let alone today. If we keep screaming, we will drag Lexus into the 20th (yes, I said, 20th) century; maybe by 2040 we'll finally get some 21st century kit when it is all "proven" technology (or Lexus runs out of old stock of the stuff from 1998).

Lexus has some of the worst crossovers/SUVs on the market today. A far cry from the solid LS, LC, ES, and RC cars entries. While I applaud them for their dedication to quality control and the heap of standard features their cars have, they simply do not make good Crossovers and SUV’s. The LX is dated and needs to be replaced. The RX is dated and needs to die altogether. The RX is hideous and poorly packaged. And the UX is a packaging and design disaster as well. The only respectable crossover the have is the aging NX. Their entire crossover/SUV lineup needs an overhaul

I loved every LS and the SC coupe (even the odd 2nd gen) are marvelous machines. Much better than their overpriced and unreliable German counterparts. And done even get me started on the gorgeous LC or the mental LFA. The point is, I love Lexus, but they have to do better with their SUV’s. They’re just bad. I look at a comparable X5 or XC90 and yeah I know they’re not as reliable, but I’d take them over the RX simply because the RX is such a mess stylistically speaking. Its styling also poops on its practicality and visibility. It’s just all bad.
