Maybe it’s because I’m a little wiser in my old age but I’ll say this: I’m not on the road yet because I watch and listen to Big D and Allen, couple other big names that have years of experience, if you can work under Any of them, you’re going to Expeditor college and getting paid for the education. I’m amazed at how many drivers advise newbees on the FB page, “Save up a cushion to fall on and clean up your personal life at home, otherwise you’ll never make it on the road”. Free advice is a valuable tool, hammer down driver, I’ll see you around!

I had mostly good experience as a fleet owner at Panther. Weed was one of the worst problems. I had two brothers smoke and drive a straight truck into a low bridge and peel the cab and half the box open. I had one driver take his first load to Missouri from Indiana and then quit and drove home on my diesel. I had a team burn out my brakes and axles on a mountain in west Virginia because of poor driver experience.

Sucks Bro; sorry to hear that. Exactly why I have my own vehicle and my own authority. I’m surprised that more fleet owners don’t subtract out their work at like a 90/10 split. You make 10% by just booking the load handling the paperwork. Simple. It’s easier to deal with someone who has their crap together. You can sub out 20 drivers with no headaches nor vehicle maintenance costs, fuel or insurance or a few more vans with triple the stress. Just my thoughts. Thanks for sharing. Safe Travels.
@EverythingApax4 жыл бұрын
Not clear on your meaning of subcontracting. Do you mean buy the van then basically lease them while dispatching them? Or do you mean be a carrier/dispatch that does a 90% split of the all in rate?
@eddieyourdj4 жыл бұрын
@@EverythingApax Be a Carrier/Dispatcher. Not being in the bizz that long I’m thinking outside the box. My logic may very well be insane. If you brokered the loads at 90/10(guesstimate) I would think that you would get quality drivers lining up to work with you. It would have to be drivers with their own authority. That way they cover their own insurance, along with all other cost, making them more dedicated and committed. Correct me if I’m out of my mind...lol. It seems like it makes sense in my empty head. 🤔🤓

If I were to get another van and hire a driver I think I would (based on what you dealt with)1- hire only people who are retired and collecting a SS ck. 2. Deduct from there pay a security deposit at 10% each deduction for expenses after they quit to avoid a loss. They would get reimbursed when they leave at a .003 interest rate. 3. I would hire on the condition they pay for all fuel at a 60-40 split, driver get 60%. I would also put in a condition they are responsible for for following all the rules I would make up in driving my equipment, and if they break them they are personally responsible and financially responsible for any loss that is beyond the scope of their job. 4. They would pay me for their first full tank of fuel. I'm leased to a company where owners can track their vehicle at all times.

Being an OTR driver is about as dysfunctional as someone can get! Living in a vehicle, sleeping in parking lots, taking truck-stop showers, being disrespected by shippers/receivers, and being forced to eat unhealthy foods routinely while out...... not much "functional" about that LOL. Now, I say all this tongue-in-cheek, as I fit the description of that dysfunction... HAHA. I do feel for you on hiring and maintaining a driver.... I know it is difficult. You just have to remember that they are drivers for a reason.... not business owners. As a manager for 10 years in a totally different industry, you rarely find the ideal candidate. That being said, set backs are tough, both for the employer and the employee. We have to just move on and run the business, being careful for a next time. It's also hard to vet people. Sure things happen in life, but you have to be responsible with other people's equipment. Full Stop. I'm glad you got your van back, moving forward - I hope you find a good driver, someone willing to do the work responsibly and above reproach to the end.

Ok, but he left the employee hanging on purpose until the next day. Not a smart move for an employer.

@@loafandjug321 I don't look at this industry as being one where employers should hold the hands of their employees. It's not like he was asked to drop a basket of fries on his way out the door. The guy had a responsibility of some pretty expensive equipment. I'd be extremely pissed if I had to repo my own van, while trying to hustle on my own over the road. The bottom line is respect - for self, for others, and the things that they put in your charge. Be above reproach. If my employer made me wait overnight to get back to me, because I laid a bag of drama at his door, I'd be happy if that was all that happened.
