At minimum, stop "watching" the news on TV, they drag stories out and even then it's aimed at an average level of comprehension. You can get way more information and depth much faster by "reading" the news.

It's unfortunate that individuals who experienced a traumatic childhood don't learn healthy boundaries. Therefore, they haven't been able to gauge their limits. Many suffer from FOMO (Fear of Missing Out). We may be able to enjoy our lives after we deal with our trauma. But, we can't relive our childhoods. Thanks for sharing this information.

I’m an RN, BS. Nursing is the worst. There’s always a staffing shortage, who will care for the patients because Sue called out. Mary is on maternity leave, Beth is on vacation! Can you please help us in your days off???? What days off?! You constantly call me in every day I have off! Patients need care but mistakes are high when you work 7 - 12 hour shifts!!!! It’s always so. The hospital doesn’t want to hire extra RNs ($$$$) but the other nurses are burned out. I retired early!! I couldn’t do it anymore. I was suffering and patient care was suffering. Enough!!!!! I’m done and very happy!!!

I’m on the burn out phase right now as a nurse too. I don’t want fulltime employment bug recently been difficult to eggs gifts with casual working now I’m forced to get into permanent employment. I’m so anxious , I’m offered a high position and been there before, don’t really want to do it. I’m still looking for other opportunities right now even for less money. I’m not retirement age yet for another 25 years but been a nurse for 20 years already and I’m done physically mostly .

I'm now almost 74, and I live near Seattle, Washington State. I quit watching (and reading) the news about 40 years ago, when the central story on a slow weekend was a vehicle accident that killed a number of kids, IN MISSISSIPPI. "If it bleeds it leads" is their mantra. It keeps our whole culture in angst and upset. Too upset about things that don't matter or that we can do nothing about, to think clearly. Absorbing ALL of our attention and energy, so we can't do anything about what we DO care about. Despite avoiding the "news" or at least the editor's version of it, it's really impossible to avoid knowing what is going on. Truly. It's impossible. But turning down or out the screaming hysteria really helps.

Stimulation, period. Glad you discussed the 'watching sports' example. There's something to be said for going out, chatting with friends, socializing, etc to offset depression. But at some point, when I hit rock bottom, I realized that my nervous system needed a break from ANY stimulation. Even what is typically considered positive & therapeutic activities. Anything very stimulating & mentally or physically draining was setting me back.

I had to stop watching the news , it was making my anxiety so much worse . I have felt so much better. If I want to know what is going on in the world I may pick up a newspaper and read it. It’s a boundary I can put in place to protect what I bring into my life.

For me, it’s reading comments on KZbin, Reddit and other social media that causes the most anxiety. I feel bad and beaten up after viewing them. I am doing my best to avoid them. A concentration of judgmental and mean posts/comments about my group of people on Reddit for example nearly destroyed my mental health. It was so hard to look away, scrolling to see even one good comment. I realize that now it’s called doomscrolling.

I grew up with two narcisstic parents so I struggled with hoarding. Of course I married a covert narcissist unknowingly. But I spent a huge amount of time organizing our lives and home including spending weeks organizing paperwork into a mainstreamed filing system. A year and a half later while I was going to school and working and taking care of the baby and taking care of the man child and doing all chores and maintenance I came home to find my husband dumped all the files in with all the papers to be filed and bills to be paid and all the other papers he could find into a big mixed up mess. I felt myself break that day. That was nearly three decades ago and I haven't been able to recover from it... yet. The husband is no longer in my life.

Watching the news is pure poison for the human mind. Sports aren't even entertaining anymore, and it's all the same boring nonsense that doesn't affect your life in any way. Put the damn phone down. DO NOT use your phone for the first two hours when you wake up instead of reaching for it the second your eyes open. Find a piece of nature and go hiking or walk with music on, and you'll feel infinitely better. Go to the gym for an hour each day, and you'll notice a huge difference in your mood.

"It's a cultural thing to be a mild hoarder" (especially for all of us living in the US). So true! I am from Europe, but my husband is American and we do currently live in the US. He definitely has an issue with owning too much and having a very hard time letting things go. It causes me so much (unnecessary) stress! I definitely want to go into a more minimalistic direction myself, it's just hard to start when it seems so overwhelming and you have to deal with resistance from your partner as well as your own.I started, but then gave up again because it's just so much.

🙏 Thank you for sharing ❤ 1. This is why I stopped watching news years ago 😊 100% agree with your words. 2. Never watched sports myself. Love doing it for fun and exercise though 😊 never competitive 3. I have always been a neat & tidy freak. Organisation is my middle name, in my nature. 'A place for everything and everything in its place'. Amen. 4. Simplifying your material things is such a weight off. 😊 I have never had much $ and it rarely concerns me. I value the $ though Simplify living, simplifies life. 5. I had NO boundaries 😮😢 I was a people pleaser. I am a learner on this one. I recently become aware that I need to take more time to think about my decisions and stop being a YES person. 6. NEVER been or desired to go to a gym 🤔 love hiking though Such good advice. ❤

Do you have recommendations for those of us that may have periods of days, or even weeks, when unable to be physically active? Is there another way to activate that destressing effect while layed up from, say, a surgery, or the flare period of a chronic condition? I find those to be my toughest times and biggest struggles, and, personally, am facing a series of 2-4 surgeries over the course of the next year, so finding a way to activate the effects of physical activity to alleviate the rumination that comes with being sedentary is a HUGE concern for me, and i know there are others that struggle with the pain/depression cycle, the inability to even take a walk every day to "get out of their head." Suggestions?

Sports...it got so much easier when my favorite NASCAR driver retired at the end of last season after a stellar 23-year career. I did pick another favorite but decided this was a good time to practice not keeping up with every tiny thing that happened. Dr Scott, Absolutely correct on the overdoing I’m on disability and need and want more $ to live. I mostly do remote volunteer work and love classes as I’m 57 ( my brain says 38) in process of becoming a Maryland State Peer Support Recovery Specialist I needed 46 CEUs and have over 150! I also end up being the one backing up for the leader of our Mental Health and Faith Ministry and a dedicated NAMI facilitator. At one point I was close to working a full time job from home just not getting paid for it. I’ve had MDD, anxiety and ptsd for ages but after a major fire almost 2 years ago that’s led to financial disaster and dealing with my hearts adopted adult son’s 8 psych hospitalizations this past year I live in a state of constant panic. I also stopped watching the news, and have a tendency to procastinate organizing my many packages of class materials. I’m trying to switch to a trauma informed therapist. Everything seems too overwhelming!

I've been gradually trying to eliminate unnecessary frustrations, annoyances and stressors. Although this is not a chronic one. I have cancelled all subscriptions associated with Amazon. I just spent 20 minutes trying to figure out how to cancel audible. I just realised that they make it deliberately hard to cancel on certain devices. After I finished the process I realised that was such a necessary stress to go through. I decided to cancel prime as well. Because do I really need everything the next day like they say? No! I can wait for most things. I'm not giving my money to a company that deliberately makes it harder for me

I randomly check sky news headlines to check whether Putin, Trump, or Kim Yong Mental have been assassinated yet. I’m going through some ambiguous grief and passively killing myself because I’m too weak to live in this world. I’m on a 3 year waiting list for mental health team. I’m surrounded by pointless acquisitions. I can’t get out of this funk. Thank you for doing these videos, I didn’t think anyone would understand these things I’m doing and not doing. I can keep up with the parts of ‘what’s happening’ that matter to me, but even better-each episode ends with “Good News” stories sent in by listeners. Lovely and often hilarious, ending with the Good News means that’s the last thing you hear before they sign off. I stopped watching the news years ago, purely because I don’t trust the news media to be impartial, and I hate all the drama, trauma and upset. Since then I feel a bit ignorant about the world, however I feel a LOT less negative. I also stopped going on Facebook. News headlines are set up to make you feel something without you knowing nuance, context or what else is relevant. We are getting trolled 100% of the time. YT is getting the same way. I have to regularly avoid channels which sensationalise everything, but when you get past the thumbnail the article is pure guesswork and conjecture, and rarely what the title said.

I know it’s just a game but it’s too stressful for me. Lots of rules. Lots of competition. Lots of deception. Lots of mind game. Nah, thank you.

I definitely have a problem with watching the news. The Palestine issue got me completely distraught.

I stopped watching the news years ago. Problem is most people then only consume "news" from social media ( running on echo chamber algorithms) and that is hour biggest existential threat

Stay away from all Network news! It's all the same crap. They're counting on you getting excited and wanting to hear their made up gore. There are people on the Internet that do podcasts that tell you what is "really" happening. It's not stressful when you hear the TRUTH!

Love how you explain all of this so well because I have just been talking about all of these issues, especially the fact that in America we are constantly bombarded with being programmed to buy things and I just think to myself how crazy this cycle of consumerism is.

That is what I do. I say ok, if I make 10.00 per hour and I buy this 100.00 item that is 10 work hours. Would I go into work the next 10 hours simply to own that item?

You said something very interesting in the beginning! You basically said that Anxiety isn't real, that it's a mental mechanism. So basically it seems that the next time I feel anxiety coming on, I should be able to tell my brain/myself, to " shut the F up, you're not real just a mental process that can't Effect me if I don't want it to"! Heck, in my brain that really helps me. And you are right on, with the balance between Stress and Anxiety. I know I have to manage my stress overloads, sometimes even more at certain times. But many times, I need to back up, make a Hit List, tell everyone demanding something from me, that things will take a little more time, and just try to knock off just a few important tasks pet day, till I'm caught up Thank you for being available to us low income, can't afford quality therapy from someone as good as you are. Thank you Keep it real, and id love to see the blessings you will get from your heavenly Father one day! Thank you
