In this video I am talking about my dumpster business that has under CDL trucks and trailers. We use a loophole and de-rate our trucks from fords factory 10k gvwr ford superduty f-350 and run 16k gvwr Nedland industries EZ rolloff dumpster trailers. There are some changes coming and with equiptment costs and interest rates I think I am making the right decision for my business

I found this out recently as well shopping to replace one of my trucks. Even the 250s are over 10,000 GVWR. They start at 10,400, except for the base models which don't have the power. I have a 10k derated 3500 Ram as my main truck. My 2500 Ram is the back up, but was looking to swap them our every 2-3yrs so I always have a new truck, plus the write off. I have two new trucks and two new roll off trailers for $120k. Basically the price of a new hook truck. Trailers and cans are paid for and insurance/maintenance is significantly cheaper vs a hook truck. I am actually running cans for a local franchise right now because their 550 hook truck is down waiting on parts. Worst case if both my pick ups went down, I can always rent another pick up. The only pro to hook lift is the speed/efficiency.

I am in the same boat and see no reason to upgrade... I am sure we can figure it out in the future. in the meantime my stuff is working great and I am paying down debt...

Great video Justin. Paying down your business debt is probably the best plan before adding a roll-off truck to your mix. Got to tell you though I have been in the new truck pretty much every day this week because we are so busy and the truck is nice compared to the trailer setup but all said and done I will always keep my trailer setup as a backup.

We will always keep a trailer or two as well. I am hoping after this year I can order a truck but I think with the changes in my business lately and sales increasing alot we are gonna need more cans before too long

Good stuff Justin. Buy what you need not what you want, you couldn't say it any better. Run the trucks then replace the engine when the time comes is always an option.

There are a couple benefits to having a hooklift truck. One is efficiency at the drop and pick-up site. I can drop and pick a dumpster in a quarter of the time that it takes to swap with my trailer. The time at the dump goes so much faster as well. We've had fewer issues getting in and out of our drops, pick-ups, and transfer stations. The other benefit that we have seen is the payload and cost. Your cans cost the same so there's no savings there, but the tire wear and issues are a lot fewer, not to mention the maintenance and the licensing. We still have F-550's and trailers, but the hooklift does twice the work in a day, ok maybe 33 percent more, than the truck and trailers do. I love your channel keep up the good work!!

a roll off truck in general is more efficient than a trailer when doing swaps. there are alot of dumpsters we drop that I think to myself "a roll off truck could never drop a dumpster here" There is pros and cons to both in certain situations getting an under CDL roll off truck doesn't do much for us right now...not sure what my future plans are but I hope to eventually be running 30-40yd cans on top of what we do now

Justin, I think the only difference between a 3/4 and a ton SRW in all brands is there is an extra leaf spring in the ton trucks thus making them higher GVWR. So order an F 250. If you want a bigger gas motor upgrade to the 7.3L that away you'll be at the 10K GVWR. You can always throw some airbags etc if you need more suspension in the rear. If you want to stick with a 6 speed transmission you'll have to buy a Chevy. Good Luck!
@Lifes_Apprentice
@Lifes_Apprentice Жыл бұрын
Ford would not let me get a 7.3 litre f-250 they said the upgrade is a 6.8 litre which is a brand new motor and makes me nervous. I have my f-250 already and it works hauling pretty good. That being said I don't think I will be switching any trucks for a little while. I may end up getting a chevy some day

I de-rated my trailer to 14k because my 3/4 ton Ford is 10.4 GVWR. It’s pretty rare for my dumpsters to push close to my new limit of 24.4 combined weight. Also, I love the 10 speed matched to the 6.7 diesel in my 22 ford 3/4 ton, wonder if you just got a bad one? Best of luck to you in 2023, love your channel.

We run up to 26k pretty often so I want every pound I can get. The 10speed on our 7.3 gas sucks when hauling because it is jumping gears like crazy compared to the 6 speed. I would venture to guess the 10 speed transmission will not last long doing what we do compared to 6 speed

These videos have been really helpful man. Thank-you!! Question for you, you've mentioned that you use Your Docket for scheduling. Do you know how much of your business is booked through the software vs. through phone contact? With phone contact, do you have someone dedicated to just manning phone calls?

we do maybe 25% online and the rest is phone and email. we have a full time person on the phone usually

With your bumper pull trailer, what range of tongue weights are you seeing on your setup emplty and max load? Has that been an issue.

The 6.8 has been a round for a very long time, Plus a 250 is rated higher than 350’s used to be.

Not the old V10 6.8. A new 6.8 V8 based off the newer 7.3 gasser.

1) Who do you use for credit card transactions? Square charges about 3% plus .10c - .30c per transaction depending on if the transaction is online or in person. On a $500 rental that's approximately $15. Kind of steep in my opinion but seems like the going rate. 2) How do you keep track of your cans? DRS seems to be the software of choice by many. 3) How much do you spend on tires for trailer and registration yearly? A couple of flats per month could justify a cable truck.

We use square. We use an app called "docket" there is a link in the description of my videos. We do get nails in tires quite often but almost everytime we are able to patch ourselves. Both trucks and 3 trailers we spend probably 3500 a year on tires...Also figure 200k miles a year roughly so we wear them out literally

Justin an F250 and F350 truck are identical. Same everything. Just throw a set of quality air bags on the back and it will solve any sagging issues. I'm currently driving a 2021 F250 with 7500lb airbags it will hold as much or more than my 2019 F350 I traded in for this truck. But like you said if you got 16k trailers and buy that over 10k F350 you could be asking for trouble 🤑🤑🤑🤑

That’s huge! That’s going to do away with hotshots, dumpster rigs under CDL sheesh. Maybe Chevy or gmc will do it? That stinks.

It will affect alot of people. I have a buddy in the tree service business and he derates some trucks as well. I think with the rise in people doing it they decided to stop. I think part of it is the auto manufacturers cant keep thier shit together as it is so they dont want to do custom orders anymore

Why do you not like 10 speeds? I absolutely LOVE the heck out of mine. I also have a HD 2500. All i did was ad air bags to the rear. Works like a charm. And rides better than a 1 ton. Seriously… its a great thing. One other thing. Maybe do a video on how to charge for a swap out if its during the rental period. And do you give any breaks if they want to rent it for a month? How many dumps would you allow for a month rental that would be included in the rental fee. I m having trouble figuring that out down here in Madison. :-)

I can do a video like that but I charge the same as original 7 day rental unless I can bring an empty and pick up the full I will take some money off because we saved a trip

@@Lifes_Apprentice that is how i have been doing it. i also give Contractors who are repeat customers a contractor discount rate after the first rental. its kind of an interesting topic with so many options ect.... maybe do a video if you run short of ideas. thanks for the info though, makes me feel better about how i am doing it.

As someone who is gonna get into dumpsters next year, my advise would be either A. just derate the trailers or B. Get a class A dl or C. Get the f250 and throw air bags in the back. I had to get class a for my Menards delivery contract.
