I'm pretty sure most of religious practices such as fasting, abstinence (no fap), meditation, etc. once are ancient scientific knowledge of our ancestors to promote healthy lifestyle that became lost in translation and turn into "religious practices". It's been challenging some late nights, but I can wash my teeth mid-day and know I won't have to do that at night. Also, some intestinal issues I use to have, have been greatly reduced. i often get criticised by my family and wife regarding the one meal a day thing. i've been eating this way for about the last 10 years, as i found myself becoming bloated, tired and drowsy at work whenever i tried to stuff food in my gut at midday. and because i work in customer service on the phones all day, i found simply having a couple large bottles of triple-filtered water would not only sustain me, but also keep me feeling absolutely great. i never once felt uncomfortable, nor did i have to take unnecessary toilet breaks other than to piss. now everytime i go beyond the one meal per day, my body automatically regrets it. moral of the story is, listen to your body. it speaks to you. it reacts and makes the decisions for you, you just need to be open enough to listen to it and adjust accordingly. Lex also touches on a good point in the beginning about food appreciation in general. after i switched to this mode out of necessity due to being at work all day, it also very quickly allowed me to appreciate what being and feeling hungry FEELS like. i now crave the hunger as much as i crave the food. allowing myself to actually get to a stage where i actively feel hungry is now a pre-requisite for me eating anything at ALL. and i had no guide or book or guru to advise me on this, i just felt my way through and decided to be more in tune with my own body.

I jumped on the intermittent fasting bandwagon, and I developed a (very mild, but detectable) case of reflux - heartburn. It took me a few doctor appointments before we figured out what it was. Eating large rmeals with lots of time in between is the textbook no-no if you have acid reflux tendencies: you're recommended to do the exact opposite to keep it under control. There's no one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to diet, and it should be kept in mind before you go for what is generally a rather drastic change of eating habits.

I've done Ramadan. Not a muslim. I was in Egypt diving in 2005 and living with a Bedouin so I thought wtf, if they can do it I can. Obviously its just in the day from sun up to sun down, but its still like 16 hours each day for 30 days. What they don't tell you, or maybe they don't realise is that after about 10 days you start tripping like you are on LSD. My belief is its the bodys way over getting you through and a little reward. I believe its DMT being release, maybe the body thinks its dying. Its pretty cool though, walking down the road at 10 am tripping balls.

@@zechsmerquise3132 Honestly just keep doing what you're doing, salt is the big one for sure. What I've found is once you've crossed the hurdle of 36-48 hours, its pretty smooth from there. Even add an extra challenge of going for a walk or a jog. It'll boost endorphins as well as clear a mental hurdle that "you're useless without food." Also even try the Wim Hof technique, it's 10 minutes long (you can go longer though) and works wonders. Best of luck!

As much as I enjoy your deep conversations with physicists, this episode is the most practically relevant in my life today. After almost 3 months of OMAD I definitely feel less distracted and foggy, more energetic and have dropped 35 lbs. My LDL and triglycerides are also improved and A1C hovers around 80 even after a daily meal. It becomes much easier once you get past the first 4-7 days as your stomach adapts to less work. As long as you get the required proteins and vitamins, OMAD makes perfect sense in our mass consuming, food as succor world.

That's great. I planned to do the same thing, and alhamdulilah I'm doing it having only 2 small meals per day, one before sunrise and another at sunset. But I just wanna mention something that is far more interesting than just fasting, and that is spirituality. Don't undermine the power of spirituality for mental clarity, deep thinking and creativity. It takes time to have a deep connection but when it's done it's magic. Western society is being so materialistic these days and their priority is to be productive in a materialistic way, that distracts them from the real problems. Their priorities are distorted. One example is how they spend billion of dollars to discover mars and another billions of dollars in things that are explicitly damaging the environment while millions are starving and all you hear them say is to make the world a better place. Better place for you not for everyone. Capitalism and materialism ruined the world and this isn't going to last for long. I've lost my train of thought.. Lol All what I want to do is to remind all of us of these two hadiths of the prophet Muhammad peace be upon him said : "The reward of every (good) deed of a person is multiplied from ten to seven hundred times. Allah (SWT) says: 'The reward of observing Saum is different from the reward of other good deeds; Saum(Fast) is for Me, and I Alone will give its reward. The person observing Saum abstains from food and drink only for My sake.' The fasting person has two joyous occasions, one at the time of breaking his fast, and the other at the time of meeting his God. Surely, the breath of one observing Saum is better smelling to Allah than the fragrance of musk." Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "Allah the Exalted has said: 'I will declare war against him who shows hostility to a pious worshipper of Mine. And the most beloved thing with which My slave comes nearer to Me is what I have enjoined upon him; and My slave keeps on coming closer to Me through performing Nawafil (prayer or doing extra deeds besides what is obligatory) till I love him. When I love him I become his hearing with which he hears, his seeing with which he sees, his hand with which he strikes, and his leg with which he walks; and if he asks (something) from Me, I give him, and if he asks My Protection (refuge), I protect him". Fast for Allah, and the reward will follow. In dunya and afterlife in sha Allah!
