As a Québécois this was very interesting to watch because the Lombard language has a lot of sounds that my grandparents and great-grandparents used (before we had an education system). Our language has changed a lot since then but at times I really had the impression that it was an old French-Canadian grandma speaking. Great video and keep up with this wonderful content!

Speakers (not all) contribute to the death of languages, it is a mechanism specially created by unionists. A famous character after the unification of Italy said "È stata fatta l'Italia, ora vanno fatti gli italiani", which means "Italy was made, now the Italians must be made". This demonstrates how the situation was in 1800, nobody spoke Italian and few were interested in Italy as a state body.

I'm from an area in Piemonte very near to Lombardia, so my dialect is very similar to Lombard. Seen that i've been far from home for quite some time, it was so refreshing to hear it once again! As the language is not standardised, of course there are many ways to write it down. I had never seen the orthography system used in this video before, it was very interesting. I would also love, even if it's a little bit more difficult to organise, to see a video encompassing all the Gallo-Italic languages together (Lombard, Piedmontese, Ligurian, Emilian-Romagnol).

@@Zestieee it’s no longer debatable: Emilian and Romagnol are finally considered two distinct languages or, better, two dialect clusters, as they have never been standardized into two koinés (today some are working in order to standardise Emilian). I am native Emilian, I even speak one of the closest Emilian dialects to Romagnol, and I can feel the difference between the two languages. Emilian is pretty similar to Lombard; Romagnol, like Ligurian or Venetian, is a bit further from the purest Galloitalic trio: Lombard-Piedmontese-Emilian. Edit: Venetian status as Galloitalic is obviously debatable.

16:37 Simona is right, the french term is "coin" -we use it to split the wood. But Elisa is right too : we use "cale-porte" for the doors. Și-am putut să învăț un cuvânt nou ("pană" cu acest sens de "coin (pour fendre le bois)"). Sometimes Lombard is very similar to occitan or french (as a french native speaker), but sometimes not so easy to understand it.

Sono italiano (ma non lombardo) e non è stato così immediato risolvere. Sono arrivato subito alla parola italiana perché capivo la descrizione, ma la parola finale in sé è un disastro! "Qignoel" è paradigmatico, perché la parola italiana (cuneo o tacco, "tacchia" a Roma) è molto più simile a quelle spagnole (cuña, taco) che a quella lombarda. Comunque il lombardo è gradevolissimo da ascoltare! Da italiano, per me è stata una sorpresa molto piacevole, perché, pur essendo stato moltissime volte in Lombardia, lì ho sempre ascoltato solo l'italiano. Cercherò altri canali in lombard!

They mean exactly the same thing, however. This was as always a very interesting video, even for me, an A2-B1 French speaker! Like Elisa, I found it surprisingly similar to not only French, but also to Old French. But I think it has more in common with OF in terms of phonology. Like the rolled R, U being pronounced as /y/, frequent ending dropping and the /tʃ/, /ø/ sounds. In terms of grammar, the plural forms for words ending in L where very similar. Like animal -> animaux in French and animal -> animai in Lombard. Just a lovely video in the Romance language series!

my first language is Spanish but I just learned that taco is used to mean that doorstop in Spain,-and after fall down a rabbit hole on wiktionary-i learned it's related to tacón which in my Spanish (Colombian) means heel like on boots or high-heels-apparently the cognate to qignœl (meaning wedge) in Spanish is cuña (a word I also just learned), and apparently there's also cuño, a doublet, meaning "stamp"-I thought that was estampilla/didn't know the words for the other definitions for the English word stamp, I didn't even realize the word stamp has apparently nine different meanings lol-and apparently(!) in English there's a different word for when you use wedges to stop a wheel-chock-who knew! i love this channel lol

Yeah, in English we have all these different words, and wedge can correspond to any of the meanings but is much less common than the more specific words, which don't overlap in meaning at all.

Ainda assim consegui acertar quatro das palavras, algumas até bem rápido, embora a segunda tenho dúvidas de que acertaria mesmo se fosse descrita em português. It's been amazing, I'm from Mexico And I only speak Spanish. It is surprising, here it is shown how beautiful the Romance languages are and how linked they are despite time, geography and culture. She had noticed that by listening carefully, she could understand a little English but French and Lombardo have been a revelation. Thank you, it is hypnotic to listen to you. I speak French, Italian, and Spanish, so I caught 99% of the Lombardic, more than the Romanian. The OE sound is cool. One thing I really love is how the first names are followed by a definitive article. My Spanish comes from NW Mexico, where we also do the same. La Elena, el Ricardo, la Marta, el Antonio, etc. --?Vistes al Roberto? --No, al Roberto no lo he visto, pero ya vi a la Marta.

This is the first video I stumble upon from this channel. Someone recommended it on Facebook and I think this is incredible to watch. Being an Italian whose grandmother from the province of Brescia in Lombardy, always spoke a local dialect until I grew up, I try to understand Lombard. Having studied French as a child, I can understand French. Being a current student of Spanish, I hear the words in Spanish too. It's super stimulating.

Gasconists consider Gascon a language on its own, while Occitanist consider any language spoken in the South of France besides Basque and Catalan to be Occitan. Each claiming to have proofs about their claims. I personnaly don’t really have an opinion about it although I’ve read a lot of papers on that matter. Spoken Languedocian/Provençal/Limousin are as foreign as Catalan to my ears.

I can understand Lombard because I've heard it spoken by the older members of my family my entire life, but I think these words were too difficult to guess and too specific, I had a hard time too XD But it was a nice surprise to hear Lombard in one of your videos! I can tell Simona is from the Milan area because her Lombard sounds a bit more "Italianized" to me, and less "unrefined" (I don't really know how to explain it) compared to the variants spoken in the more isolated areas of Lombardy. Or maybe it's also because she was speaking slowly and articulating all the words XD

The Simona ("The" hehehe) is actually one of those Lombard Speakers who learned the language as an adult, e.g. she does not really have a true Lombard accent, although she seems to be getting better by the day, I must admit. Lombard spoken by Native Speakers sounds a bit differently, the "R" is more like a German "R" and Nasalization, in the West, is very strong in Words like "Bon", "Plafon", etc. among other things. That being said, she is a tireless Promoter of the Lombard Language! She is truly a Hero: Lombards owe a lot to her! Bravissema Simona, Inans inscì, Incoe, Diman, int el Devegnir e PER SEMPER!

Very cool :) I think Romanian was closer to Spanish and Spanish linked to Lombardian and sometimes to French and then to Lombardian, so then it was understandable to all the participants, even tho spoken Romanian seemed to throw Simona off few times. All in all Latin rulez again !!! :D Norbert please look for Southern Italian speakers - each valley below Napoli has its own unique dialect quite different from standard Italian and from other dialects, to the extend that people from behind one mountain can't understand people on the other side of the same mountain. Travel there and talks with locals are like visiting 200+ different mini-countries - no inter-illegibility whatsoever. Unfortunately Southern Italy is dying out....

All standardized version of northern Italian languages sound italianized. Just listen to Rai Ladin or regional friulan channels. The Southern and Northern varieties of Lombard are not Italianized.

I've heard of clip of Emilian in one of the language channels, and it was the hardest of the Gallo-Italic languages to understand. The phonetics were very different, sounding almost slightly French at times. Strange if you ask me, considering it is one of the most southern Gallo-Italic languages, in fact, sharing a border with Tuscany.
