Cool to hear but Kirby has a number of flaws. He's dumb in many areas, so he can be outsmarted. His stats are standard next to other characters of his same level; Meta Knight being faster, Dedede being stronger. It's implied that he would have lost certain battles if it weren't for team work or moral support of others.

As well as being the one who ordered John to assassinate a member of the table-his sister. Yet somehow John not only gets excommunicado’d for it, but they continue to send assassins after him long after his body count reaches the thousands Virtually all of this could have been avoided if the supposedly omnipresent and omnipotent organisation had even the broadest safeguard against their members staging obvious coups like the _very_ effective safeguards they have in place for retired assassins

All the crazy rules/laws/odd lore in John Wick sequels, can all be explained. When John was on his side, hobbling at the end of the first one, he's in way worse shape than he thought. When the Hitman paramedics found him, they had to stabilize him by placing him in a medical coma. So, all the crazy fantastical elements in the sequels are all in his head. It is kind of like the 3-4 seasons of Archer, where he's dreaming those seasons, while in his medical coma.

This is why, along with how video gamey the whole movie is, I got to thinking about who's the deadlier killer; Arthur Morgan or John Wick. Eventually I settled on Morgan for one big reason: John Wick consistently misses shots at close range (in the fourth movie anyway) whereas Arthur can consistently get a headshot with a pistol from over a hundred yards with bare seconds to aim. Arthur is also more durable, able to shrug off rifle rounds and many pistol shots to the unarmoured head and torso, where similar shots were incapacitating to John at best. Where John had to get into brawls and shoot enemies dozens of times to finish them, Arthur can consistently kill multiple foes with a single bullet to the head in the span of barely seconds. If put into the same circumstances as John in the 4th movie, Arthur would have gotten through each fight faster and more efficiently, each foe put down with a neat hole in their head and no time to retaliate. Just a thought the movie put in my head.

I don't mind the body armor working like that as long as it's consistent. Yes, that mechanic is a bad match for the tone of the franchise - this world is not supposed to have magic - but we can chalk that up to suspension of disbelief. The deeper problem is that this mechanic leads to shit action scenes. John just brushing off being shot because of the suit time and time again is boring to look at. For drama and story telling, the bullets should still hurt enough to leave bruises, so he'd have an incentive to avoid them, and being shot could still be a big deal. Maybe small arms leave bruises and stronger munition can break bones. The armor also helps him get away with being stupid through no skill or personal merit. He survives being shot at literally because he has plot armor. It's not an advantage he gained by being clever or training, it's just an upgrade he bought. Might as well give him a power suit and rocket boots too. Or a gun that aims for him.

Fun Fact: many American buildings _technically do_ have a 13th floor, but it's small and closed off, skipped by the elevators; functionally useless but just enough of a "floor" to count so that the 14th floor is actually the 14th. John Wick 1's club scene and 2's catacomb scenes are my most rewatched John Wick action scenes. Even though he had that ridiculous suit in the catacomb, he was still actively avoiding being shot at a lot of times by using shadows and corners. And the nightclub scene in the first movie was just top-notch action for me. He didn't rely on some superhuman capabilities or super hero like business suits. He was just an insanely skillful assasin doing his thing. He wasn't "tanking" bullets, he was avoiding bullets by taking cover and movements. And the fights were dirty. There were a lot of dirty tricks like eye gouging and foot shooting that you don't usually see choreographed in action scenes. I don't think any other scenes in 2,3,4 had these traits that made them grounded. 3 and 4 suffered extremely severe action overload.

I've seen people on Reddit saying you just need to suspend your disbelief. I get that, most movies require it to some level, but I question how people think this suspended disbelief for the armour is better than when we were doing it for him taking cover in the first film. They both require some amount of letting it slide, but the armour just makes boring battle scenes, where the moving in and out of cover at least provided some interest

It also had that hype-fuel of Keanu Reeves' tactical training video which had cuts between rooms/sets but showed raw skills. Which made the movie all the more believavle when they blended those skills with Chinese-style MA choreography & photography. Reminds me of when John Woo first came to the US and blended his Chinese approach to American films and really "sexed up" the cheesy action film--and some of those movies have really artistic shots (yes, doves, but not just those). Not one of the best action films ever, but in the subgenre of "action porn", where you're not watching for the plot but need enough to make a movie, it's really good. Going to the hotline miami sequence, they asked why those guys Wick killed wouldn't have been wearing the bullet proof suits but they left out that the movie showed a scene of the assassins demonstrating the dragons breath rounds on the suits before that scene and that was the bullets in the shotgun that wick used to dispatch the guys in that sequence so whether they were or weren't wearing the suits wouldn't really make a difference

The little bit you find out about the guild in the first movie consists of rules that would actually make it stronger. In 2-4, the rules are arbitrary and harmful, and make it seem more like a cult than a powerful criminal organization. For example, if someone has a marker, they can force the person to take out a member of the high table.

1:40:00 ish I like this whole theme of John Wick being a magnet for harm upon his "friends". It's videogame-protagonist syndrome. The dragon only attacks the city when _you_ show up. The guy only gets stabbed in the back _when he's talking to you._ Imagine if "The Dragonborn" in _Skyrim_ was an actual character. They'd quickly develop a survivor's guilt and seclude themselves from the people they want to help because when they show up things have a way of just getting worse for the people around them. While they get more power and accolades and wealth, the town gets noticeably emptier since the smithie got killed in that random dragon attack. That's a whole story in and of itself; of a hero who's triumphs paint a target on bystanders and they struggle to justify "helping" anyone anymore. But nah, John's a good friend. Don't worry about it

That would make for an excellent short film at least. It reminds me a little bit about the "Playing an RPG" animations by Joel Haver, where the player can only make the wrong choice, though that's played strictly for comedy. You could have a story about a young, aspiring quester sent on a search for a hero who the people of [Town/Kingdom of X] believe has "abandoned" them, only to find he's exiled himself due to his belief that he only makes things worse. It could be a lighthearted story of a man's misunderstanding of events, a cautionary tale of the road to hell being paved with good intentions, or anything in between. I wouldn't be surprised if this story has already been told and I just haven't seen it, but it's an interesting concept.

Not that it invalidates the criticism if I am correct, but in that first fight against the Marquis’s men, the first shots on one of them sparking and making a metallic impact indicated to me that these special guards had the plate armor introduced at the end of JW3 under their suits (a very convenient excuse to let the stunt men pad up more fully under the suits). I had to go back to watch the rooftop scene where Winston shoots John after Rags mentioned the slide didn't move. One of the comments from that clip talks about how they expect in the next movie John Wick will go "full Baba Yaga" on the high table. Like he's going to scream and his hair will turn spikey and golden or something. When I think about it the sort of departure from what it originally was is pretty common any time an IP outlives the vision of its creator. Anything from Dragon Ball to the MCU, eventually no matter what the original premise was it gets warped into some sort of abomination. John Wick you can tell was never intended to be anything but a one-off movie and now it relies entirely on spectacle with no substance. There's a huge audience for that sort of thing.

I'm rather indifferent to what they wind up doing, but I find it very notable that John had wounds that looked relatively (compared to what he's survived already) survivable and they never actually showed him properly dead. They showed him collapse and they showed a grave, but they very conveniently framed it such that if they decided to claim he faked his death and actually recovered they very easily could get away with it. While this is the "final" movie, it's very noticable that it wouldn't be hard to either bring John back or have Mr. Nobody take over; having kept a keen eye on history, I'd be very surprised if a new movie didn't wind up happening.

I'm sure some scifi series has done this premise. But it could be cool if some tech was invented that defended against all objects moving over some level of speed. Making it necessary to use older weapons, mainly hand to hand combat which would be able to get past the tech because they were slow enough. You would have to justify why the tech is unable to defend against slower attacks, like it is unable to distinguish friendly movements and perhaps it is implanted so it cannot ever be turned off or something. Maybe it was harming the users because of their own movements so they had to set it to only stop things moving faster than a human can reasonably move. Potentially the protagonist (or certain characters in general) are trained to be faster or slower overall to get around this limitation to some extent.

Movie was fun, but I agree. Ever since they included the magic suit armor in 2, I was significantly less interested in the fight scenes. That’s something you do as a one off not make a rule. It breaks all stakes and ruins the entire universe. No one is an assassin because no one can die anymore unless the plot deems it so.
@Wheningoubt
@Wheningoubt Жыл бұрын
I don't know how you could do the suit as a "one off" to be honest, it seems that baked into the concept is the idea that it's not particularly hard to come by one, at least for a well connected assassin. But I'm generally opposed to one-off OP items in general, as they're vulnerable to becoming a contrivance that are only around to be convenient anyway, so maybe there's a way to do this that I'm just not able to see. I think it would have been acceptable if being shot still had some kind of impact, which the film clearly knows should be the case considering how the armored guys in the Osaka hotel were (sometimes) getting thrown around by being struck with bullets, even if they didn't penetrate. But the way the suit is done in the JW universe is probably one of the worst examples of literal plot armor that I've seen, where grabbing your suit collar is basically equal to turning on an invincibility cheat in a game.

@@ancientflames A good way to do this kind of OP item is to make severe drawbacks "look at the armor in Berserk". If John Wick got something akin to Iron Man Mark 1 Armor that made him super slow and he had to plan a spesific encounter using it well with it's limitations removing pieces as he goes. Then it could be in the back of our minds for later movies (could he bring back or use that armor or similar armor here) without being a negative. And it would be reasonable for nobody else to use that armor since it is so bulky and expensive that paying 20 guys with just guns is cheaper.

The reason someone would rate this a 10/10 is entirely different as to the reasons why someone would rate something like Jacob's Ladder a 10 for example. It means that for an action movie that plays itself very straight, it's actual quality and perhaps among the best in quite a while. John Wick sells itself as an over the top unrealistic cheesy world that plays itself straight and serious. That's the appeal of it. Hence no cops coming after him. Hence john wick being quite literally the myth everyone says he is. He is pretty much a videogame character. Go through all the John wick movies slowly with purpose, please. 35:20 Mostly because you can only find one video out there on KZbin that critiques the John Wick movies. When someone in response says shit like, "I don't watch it for the story," then why are you at a movie theater? You paid 10-11 dollars to get the ticket, around 11 bucks for popcorn and a drink, all to sit in a chair for 3 hours for selective action scenes, which, if I'm generous, are an hour of the film. Why not just wait till it comes out on-demand. Or wait till the action scenes are on KZbin. Why waste the money and time to go see a story you don't give a fuck about which makes up over half the film?
@SwampGreen14

Also, how is that any different from the TLJ defenders? „But muh visuals“ still isn‘t an excuse for shitty writing. Yes, its an action film, but thats no excuse to completely fuck up the worldbuilding.
@TheNoonish
@TheNoonish Жыл бұрын
Surely the reason they like action scenes is because the action is completed by the story surrounding them, which gives a good context for why characters are in the scenario. So they actually do like the story, they just don't want to have to defend anything about it.

My understanding about the Osaka battle having katanas, throwing knives and bows was that the writers knew that they would have to fight dudes in the vibranium suits. Since they introduced the suits, they made it clear, bladed equipment works well on those suits. I let them have the absurdity of the suits logistics since it has remained somewhat consistent (even if it's stupid) and the integration of Japanese weaponry to counter the suits seemed like a neat concept. The sumo guys are still pretty stupid though. One of them got headshot the instant he charged the guys with guns (shocking) but the chungus health bar saved him.
