These orphans are unable to afford the treatment and only have two days before the poison kills them, so they must break into a house in Elyisum to illegally access the machine. Meanwhile, these corporate figureheads are lobbying their Government to prevent this treatment from going to Earth in a week. That way they can minimize competition and keep their prices high.

i dont think the plot being 'he wants to live' is an issue considering so many other stories are built on that premise. Infact, a majority of action/survival/combat stories can be boiled down to 'they want to live'. although I think the issue is that after he DOES get to live in the movie, we dont see him do anything with it. He doesn't change his life for the better or anything like that
@danello9091 Жыл бұрын
Usually wanting to live is the starting driving goal, and as the story progresses stakes increase to add gravity and weight to the character's actions, if you keep "I want to live" as the main focus through and through you gotta either do more with it or add bigger stakes than it, one life on top of another is falling short, making everyone a citizen of elysium should've been the original stake-rising goal, then you could make it so that there's a twist, like that Elysium is just a smaller space station, that humans from up there had been expanding to other planets and had disregarded earth as a whole, say leaving it in charge of the president while the intergalactic government rules over several colonies that span from earth to the entire milky way, and he has not only to bring down the magic medic capsules but he also ends up exposing the crimes of the corrupt government to the expanded humanity, raising awareness and bringing change to earth turning it a patrimony of humanity as the cradle of humankind.

I recently watched this movie and loved it. The ending feels like a bit of a contrived and unearned happily ever after, but overall I thought the story was great. Could more have been done with some of the concept? Sure, but I thought the characters were well written and acted enough to get me totally invested. Besides, you talked about his changing motivations as if that was a bad thing, but I thought that was the whole point of his arc, that initially he's just selfishly desperate to survive, but he ultimately realizes the girl's life, not to mention the lives of countless millions on earth that could be saved if he succeeds, is worth more than his, so he becomes willing to sacrifice himself for them. 7:54 Yeah, I can agree the magic healing stations were ridiculous, but I didn't question why they're only on Elysium, because a) the people on Elysium clearly don't care about people on earth any more than for the resources they produce, and b) this technology must be insanely expensive, so even if they were willing to spend money bringing it to earth, they wouldn't be able to bring enough of it to earth for it to make any difference, it would still be totally inaccessible to 99.999999% of people down there anyway, so what would be the point? The one thing I can totally get behind you on is that the economic implications of the ending are nonsensical. A sequel would actually be great to further explore what the world would look like following the events of the first, because it certainly wouldn't be the utopia the ending seemed to suggest.

Take that Mr. Beast video where he paid for a procedure that would give people their sight back. Inside of 10 goddamn *MINUTES* people were getting their lives back. Would it be better for those people, and the country as a whole, if we had a healthcare system that let them be productive members of society? Obviously, yes. Do our politicians, Republicans especially, have any interest in letting that happen when all they have to do to enrich their own lives is gut programs keeping vulnerable people afloat in the first place? Fuck no. So, while yes, it's completely illogical and runs counter to what a society should strive for, it's 100% realistic. We already have an Elysium, it's called American healthcare.

I was just thinking about that scene but with a different perception a few days ago, when I tried to apply to a job only for them to tell me, by whatsapp message, to record a video that was to be analyzed by AI instead of a simple phone call using the same friggin whatsapp. Talk about being judged by a machine.

This movie's storyline can be summarized as "paving the path to hell with good intentions", or "short-sighted gains in exchange for long term loses". Matt Damon's character literally dooms humanity. Glad you pointed this out as so many fail to acknowledge.

I have a sneaking suspicion this film (or script) was butchered by the studio. All I remember was that it was an allegory for US healthcare/immigration, which is fine if the story is good, but it didn't seem to have a coherent grasp of those two issues. It really did feel like they took two different scripts and mashed them together.
@jojopojo9516 Жыл бұрын
I think you nailed it with Elysium and that core aspect of the plot is why the movie was a let down. One easy to fix this is that instead of making robots, Damon could work at a mining facility which produces a rear mineral that powers these magic, healing machines. The machines could be further limited by how often they could be used. And this would create a meaningful conflict when his employer states categorically that he won't be healed following his accident. Having come to the realization that he is just a tool for the elite to maintain their vapid lifestyles, it becomes his motivation to radically change that system. The elite, of course, would make the case that it's their resources which facilitate the minerals being mined and machines made and it's their right to use the machines as they see fit. Not perfect but it would give the film an edge and some much needed thrust.

This seems to be a recurring problem with Matt Damon films; this, Suburbicon, & Downsizing all have interesting story ideas, but the overall plot is kind of boring.
@goldeneddie Жыл бұрын
Absolutely. I believe he's a big part of the problem. In fact, at first when. I wondered why this movie failed to move me, I thought it was just Matt Demon's wooden attempt at acting. He was perfect as a monotone, emotionless , brainwashed assassin in Bourne, but that was really his match, and he fails badly when anything requires a level of character waaay beyond his limited po-faced abilities. He brings literally NOTHING to this movie.

If it's on TV - sure, but otherwise is pretty bleak. I don't remember if we're even shown why the rich guys are guilty for the situation on Earth, and even if we are, it's not memorable, so I can't really cheered for their world to be ruined. As for people on Earth we're not shown anything except cancer is really solved for them so there's no real celebration at the ending either.
@Done25. Жыл бұрын
I personally didn't enjoy it. Many of the reasons why being pointed out in this video. The movie is a blatant appeal that "The US should open its borders and allow in all the immigrants with full citizenship and benefits." and that "Rich white people are evil because they're rich and white and being evil is what they do best.".
@WittyDroog Жыл бұрын
I actually thought, as the movie progressed, that was going to be a reveal that Elysium was effectively waiting for Earth to die out so they could cleanup and rebuild, like a warring army waiting out a castle keep starving to death because its resources have been cut off, which would have given our lead reason to not only use but STEAL the technology and bring it back to Earth thus thwarting such plans. Oh well. I still think Neil is an interesting filmmaker and I hope he's able to find his footing again soon.

Blomkamp's heritage shines so strongly in all of his films that I think sometimes the themes he presents justify themselves for him, without feeling like he needs to do more with them. @Andy , it's deadly radiation. It was more than obvious that once he unstuck that platform, the door would close. Even living paycheck to paycheck, when you know with 100% certainty that you would die...single, no kids, living in poverty...only if you had no will to live would you do it.
@HFRA69 Жыл бұрын
@Andy, it's a factory, where things tend to work one way only. That's not an elevator door. Also, radiation doesn't go away when the door is open, it stays in there. That thing was a death trap regardless. That's why he shouldn't be in there longer than seconds. Even X-Ray rooms are isolated! The techs are behind thick concrete and lead walls to keep the radiation away. That's a baking oven! At least make sure the door doesn't close behind you, for whatever reason!
@HFRA69 Жыл бұрын
@Andy Radiation can accumulate in several materials, especially metals. Many times, X-Ray rooms have to be rebuilt because alloys are used instead of just lead, causing the sheeting to be activated. He didn't have the door propped open, he didn't even jam it with anything to keep it from accidentally closing. And to feel the radiation like he did and the time it took him to die, it was for sure gamma radiation(Gamma and X-Ray are in the same category). On a metal room. I get that even glass makers get burned trying to pick up a hot glass piece that's falling, but that's all of a sudden, not a clear, preventable error. Also, notice how the whole line is stopped, waiting for him? Nobody helped him out? It would benefit everyone NOT to be an accident happen.
