Joe I'm not sure if you're gonna read this, but for the door you could make a hole on the bottom log and the top and then fashion a door to a something like this: |III (have a longer piece of wood to act as a hinge) and then just insert the longer piece into the holes.That way you could just open and close it. Next episode should be chinking and clearing the surrounding cabin area of dead trees and branches so it's easier to shovel when it snows. Bring another "window" tarp to cover the inside of the ladder/door but leave the outside uncovered so you can still use it as a ladder. Besides that you could always stock up on firewood, bring some good food and maybe some whisky!

Wrap the tarp around the log the other way, then the snow will have nowhere to accumulate. Just an idea.
@mstrdiver4 жыл бұрын
Great observation. If the snow blows as bad as I expect, snow weight accumulation against the tarp could just rip it down looking at the way it is currently configured at 36:05. - Wrapping the tarp around the log by going toward the outside will help shed more snow away from the fort and cause it to fill in the gap temporarily under the threshold log to help seal out some drafts. You can still drop the tarp from the top when you need more light for filming later on down the road. This is bringing out the kid in all of us when we used to go into "full scrounge mode" when building our own hidden places when growing up. -- Thanks Joe!

Person: what are you carrying in your backpack? Rocks? Joe: ummm....
@dragonmaster19634 жыл бұрын
I can't tell you how many times you've talked about river rocks and fire, I have been several times though. I believe some people just have to comment just to have people they have some kind of superior knowledge and to puff their ego because they're more of an internet bush crafter than an actual practical bush crafter that spends time out in the woods honing their skills. Joe, keep doing what you're doing, and don't let those that seek validation by ripping on someone bother you. We that have followed you for years know of your skills.

I’m sure you have already thought of this but each time you’re there cut some firewood and store it under a tarp or in the fort so that when you get there you don’t have to cut wood before you can eat I like the fort and someone else commented that if you put tree frames around the window it would look better might as well make it cute
@ShandeleReynolds3 жыл бұрын
Great idea!! And he could do that so when he woke up he would have wood. 😉

I think you should permanently enclose the front wall and build another bunk, so Doug has a place to sleep.

Actually Joe, that quote I wanted for a window frame won't be needed any more. A guy came back with a price that won't be beaten. Thanks anyway.

Man, you gave me the feels mentioning Ray Mears. I miss his video's. Easily the best bushcraft teacher I've ever seen (Sorry Joe, no hard feelings)

Ray Mears was the first contact many of us had with bushcraft. I remember when my parents subscribed to the OLN channel: Ray Mears and Les Stroud were my gods.

Hey Joe, the Fort is looking awesome! It's really taking shape! I think your next video should be a minimalistic gear camp out. All the best 👍🏻

The shelter is looking great Joe but spend 20 bucks get yourself a full-size shovel and pick and just leave it out there.

I'm surprised that shovel took that prying force he was putting on it, that would snap off any $20 shovel you brought out there as well. The key is you can't put your full weight that far out on any shovel. 200 pounds on say a 4' lever is a Cummins like 800 ft-lbs of torque.

The plastic on the window would look much better if it was taut rather that loose. I imagine it’d be quite noisy in the wind the way it is. Just a suggestion though, the fort is looking great! Love that you’ve started up these vids again

Little trick I learned ages ago in a winter survival course is setting small fires on the ground near the stump to thaw the nearby ground. If you are worries about the fire going into roots/underground you can build it on stones. It is a real good trick to thaw frozen ground.

Hey Joe, Thanks for another fun video. If I had my choice of topics I would like to see you do a "Lessons Learned" video and then adding to those earlier videos. Also, by adding any new strategies and experiences to those older videos. I guess it would add extra work to go through your older videos but I think it could be a very interesting video. You have a treasure trove of older videos. It would be nice to see you build on those videos to the present day. You have come so far and you are always a joy to watch.

Joe you should utilize the empty space at the front by throwing up some hammock hooks. On the off chance someone joins you eventually or just for your own purposes.

I like what you did and though I don't know what I'm talking about, never having done anything like this, I would have put posts, wrapped the tarp around these and THEN added the trunk/wood walls on it so no snow/cold air could have come through walls, ceiling. That would have taken the charm out of the inside of the fort though... as it all would have been plastic tarp. Your thoughts?
