Designed for writers and method actors who have never studied psychology and who have no interest in studying psychology. This series outlines each of the sixteen Jungian personality archetypes to better get you inside your character’s head. Special emphasis on how each type processes and priorities information, the nuances of their communication style, how their humor manifests, and what each type looks like as a villainous character. This week's focus is on the ENTP's personality.

23:58 "For [ENTPs], what others consider aggressive debate is actually enthusiastic conversation. Which is to say, the purpose of a debate is to win -- but the purpose of a conversation is to learn. ENTPs love a good conversation that puts no rules on how a thing can be examined. This examination, and thus the debate itself, is generally the ENTPs end goal, and they are not necessarily interested in winning or proving a given point... This can easily be misinterpreted as aggression by others, however ENTPS tend to be some of the most inherently inclusive individuals, as they actively seek out the out the opinions and thoughts of others, including and especially those whose perspectives and life experiences differ from their own." I wish I could put this on a billboard every time people talk about our type lol. You have summarized the experience so accurately :) Awesome video!

As an ENTP i can without a doubt say you hit the nail on the head with this one, so much so that It helped me understand facets of my personality that I haven’t even considered was a result of something greater. Please keep going with this series 🙏🏿

23:58 - 25:46 FInally! As an ENTP myself I have finally seen an accurate representation of how debate is. I often see this part of the ENTP not only over represented in discussions about the ENTP, but also is the part most people get wrong. And when talking about a type which is most concerned with accuracy, it sucks to see how terribly misunderstood it is, at least on that aspect. I no longer use the word debate in discussions about the ENTP, because the word suggests that both it is a competition and that it is intended to reach a conclussion. As an ENTP I could care less about either, who cares who wins a debate, winning does nothing but feed the ego of the winner, and to win debates is as useful to finding a truth as a fan is to make ice. It is so easy to undermine the opponents points, and even win being on the wrong side of the argument. Debates are usually just hollow and lead nowhere because the better debater always wins, not the one that is right. And remember, we care more about accuracy than pointless recognition. Of course we care about how we are perceived in an emotional way, due to Fe, but not if people think we are brilliant or not. So i see no point on debating for competition, unless we both agree we are doing it for fun. We ENTPs often do not care about how we are perceived, Ti cares more about how I perceive myself than how I am perceived. So winning the debate accomplishes nothing. Instead, what we are interested is in exploration. We want to learn, to see things from new perspectives, we want to analyze ideas form all sides. I do not care for a conclussion, I care to learn, and develop ideas. And I am gonna stop it right there, before my Ne takes it further, lmao.

Thank you! I really try to see the types from their own perspective, and ENTP is very different from me (ENTJ) so it's always a relief when I hear I got it right, lol! I kept noticing how ENTP's eyes light up when they start arguing and I was like... "they're enjoying this. They're not just enjoying the ending, they're enjoying the journey." Thanks so much for watching!

As a well realized ENTP,I found your lack of MBTI jargon as a welcome relief from those lost souls still looking for themselves. The key to our villainy is an aggressive nose for the noose. We can tell in an instant whether our companions have the guts to hang with us. This is why I always have Jesus on my list of ENTP favorites. Anyone that uses the word hypocrite is going to be nailed by the clueless authority figures. Now go to your room, young lady!

Thank you for your heart; I will handle it with care now that you care. This notion of ENTP villainy seems contradictory to the possibility thinking and distractibility of Nes vs. Ses. My Ne imagination destroys enemies without moving a muscle. ENTP vision efficiently balances risks against rewards. The physicality required of action heroes is overt, not subtle. ENTPs might be executed for putting dangerous ideas into their follower's heads, but never for storming the normative castle themselves. "Conscience doth make cowards of us all," remarks ENTP Hamlet. Double thinking destroys ENTP resolve. ENTP Socrates accepts his fate not because he doesn't see options but because the possibilities he envisions are antithetical to his Ti ethical system. Wasting precious Si energy in the concoction of plots is wasted on the direct expression of Se's revenge. The sweetest ENTP revenge is martyrdom for the moral cause, not the gross manipulation of an existing system

Hi Cynthia, I've really been enjoying the videos. They've helped me to put words to the ideas I have for my characters and justify why they behave the way they do. They always seem to have a life of their own, so this helps a lot. Can you make one for ENFP please? I have a character I'm trying to bring to the forefront of my stories that I believe falls into this personality type. They're an anthropologist and languages expert in a high fantasy setting, chosen by a higher power to hunt supernatural creatures. I also want to emphasize his openness, charm and the way he seeks to understand and support others while bringing out his flawed altruism and how sensitive he is to cruelty. I'd be interested in seeing them all if you're willing to make them, but this is the one I'd like the most. Thank you for all you do!

@@cynthiapayne9906 What is the core difference between INFP and INTP? I always test as INTP, but I've suspected I'm actually INFP a long time, despite what the online tests say. Even though I'm very analytical and think everything through instead of "going with my heart", I'm also very sensitive and empathetic.
@cynthiapayne9906
@cynthiapayne9906 2 жыл бұрын
@@solarflare1206 My hubby's an INTP and is quite sensitive and empathic, sometimes so much so that others take advantage. INFPs are Interest based and Affiliative, while INTPs are Pragmatic and Systematic. INFPs will want to seek many sources, interpretations, and rationale to figure out what they believe, while INTPs are happy to work with one set of raw data and think through the implications themselves. INTPs are also usually more focused on individual problems and like to break them down, while INFPs are generally more concerned with larger social problems and want to build up a grand philosophy. I'd recommend taking CS. Joseph's test (csjoseph.life), especially with a person who knows you well. His test is adaptive and you can bounce around the questions, only answering the ones you are sure of, and the test will eliminate options as you go based on your answers. Hope that helps!

I've been thinking that someone I met at the beginning of the year is an ENTP. He took me on a totally wild ride after losing my last job to force me to face my fears and find another. I can't help but see a lot of the traits listed here in him, like wanting the best for others and being more than willing (preferring, really) to take unconventional routes to the finish line. It also amazed me how his mind worked when we spoke, he would run circles around me with all the ideas he was able to generate. As far as ENTPs go (if he is one) he definitely runs more on the sadistic side, as he openly admitted he took pleasure in 'scaring me back on my feet.' I guess I can't argue with results but that chaotic, unpredictable nature does make me a little nervous if I'm being honest...
@whocarescrapsa
@whocarescrapsa Жыл бұрын
Are you very sure that your interpretation of the event is 100% correct? Have you perhaps injected the sadistic part into it based on what you felt? I understand that you felt scared and stressed when facing your fears and finding a new job. That is your choice. It doesn't have to be that way. I doubt he got pleasure from scaring you. He most likely got pleasure from showing you that you have nothing to fear when finding a new job. It is more likely he got pleasure from showing you the value you have to offer. It could be an exciting time - finding new opportunities and growing. Typical ENTP here. Let me use an analogy. You have a young child that is terrified of peas. They won't have them on their plate, never mind eat them. With some clever manipulation we would be proud if we got them to overcome this fear and actually got them to start eating peas. We are not insensitive to the fear of peas, but we give it zero attention because it is not real. It is only your perception. At no point was the child or any peas in danger. We typically only help people we care about. We have to work very hard not to come across as abrasive and/or sadistic. Typically, with young ENTPs their sadistic side would be reserved for enemies, and you would get no benefit from it.

I realize this is a video meant to advise fictional characterization but it's really a wealth of insightful analysis for any non-fictional ENTP to cut their teeth on. I found myself cringing badly every time I was reminded of the stupid things I've said that meant nothing to me and everything to the person I was speaking to. Leading to a cycle of fawning, which I thought of as harmless, until I realized how manipulative and disconnected my artificial friendliness really was. I didn't feel like "me" but I knew I had to try and tamp myself down so I privately said to myself "the world is just the way it is and no amount of charging ahead and blurting the truth out is going to change reality. Better just figure out a way around this and get what I can out of it since everyone else is too dumb to see what I see." And yeah, it's lonely to be that arrogant and walled off. I began to feel desperate for connection, but really desperate for my nihilism to be proven wrong. I still felt that bitter ache in my chest when you described all of this because it reminds me of my huge fear of being ultimately destructive when all I've ever wanted is to be constructive. Now, I'm finally realizing the only way to make meaning in my life is to commit to a line of thinking and accept that I will make mistakes but it's worth making the mistake to more fully understand the world, and try to slow down my own ego when someone REQUESTS my opinion or advice by prioritizing the state of mind they are currently in, past insecurities they've revealed to me, and what their own goal or objective really is, not what I personally think the outcome should be. So, not to type my entire therapy session in the comments or anything, but these videos are probably valuable in that they're not just echo chambers reciting stereotypes- it may be fictional growth, and mbti may be pseudoscience, but if we identify ourselves with the label we should not just say "oh that's just me, can't change!" instead, be like "oh damn, yeah these flaws do seem familiar. Luckily I'm a human capable of consciously affecting the world and people around me so maybe if I keep hitting the same wall it's me that actually is the problem..." or whatever. I think I spent too much time rambling here but I'm sure it won't matter. In the grand scheme of things, what's the harm in indulging in an overlong KZbin comment?

Hi Cynthia. Can I please ask where/how you came up with the villainous information. I ask as I'd know as I'm wondering how this very particular type of shadow could be ascribe simply to a personality type and not say to a specific trauma. I can't expresse strongly enough how much I enjoyed this video as I am an entp. And also how impressed I am with your work with the other videos. I'm in awe. Thanks again for the video and thank you in advance for answering my question.

All the "social problems" supposedly by the NT types and the introverts, are not because they lack tact or shit like that, but because majority of people are sensors. Average sensors simply don't see people underneath like intuitives do. They also judge things based on social norms & commonality, mostly.

If ADHD was a personality type, it’d be ENTP😂 Foreal though this was an incredible breakdown of the ENTP personality type! I’ve never felt so understood, however I’m not too sure how I feel about that…🤔🤣 ENTPs are always presented as an emotionally unavailable/broken genius devils advocate with a proclivity for starting drama and hurting feelings. Sure that can be accurate in some of us, but I would definitely think that would be a minority for most ENTPs. Even the type title is the “Debater” which I don’t mind but I don’t see it as the most accurate name. I saw a post that called it “The Visionary” which I thought was a much better description of the ENTP. Most of us that I’ve met simply enjoy new strange, new, or novel ideas that we can breakdown to the most basic elements and find the pros and cons of said idea before we figure out a way to implement/build it. The downside is that most of the time, the second we figure out how to implement that idea we find a new topic, and completely drop the last one until we get bored 6 months later and maybe we’ll finish it 🤷‍♂️😂 Thank you for coming to my TedTalk

@cynthiapayne9906
@cynthiapayne9906 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! I'm using the 4-sides system with definitions developed by Dr. Linda Berens and taught to me by CS. Joseph. The typical, common definition of extroverted is more a Se-hero or Fe-hero extroversion: all about people, engaging in social situations, etc. They are seeking the extroverted version of their hero functions (sensory and feelings) and those are closely tied to other people. Ne-heros and Te-heros are also seeking the extroverted versions of their hero functions, but those things are not necessarily tied to other people (other possibilities, outside information). They're still extroverted because they're Initiating, or they like to control the conversation and decide their own roll in it, but the social behavior of Ne and Te heros can't be expected to mimic those of Se and Fe heros. ENTJs especially often think they're introverts. I hope that helps clarify.
