Joshua & Ryan talk about the different influences that helped them let go. Watch “Maximal” episodes of The Minimalists Private Podcast exclusively at / theminimalists
Questions answered in this episode:
When did you realize minimalism was the right path for you, and what brought you to that realization?
How do we help budding adults struggling with the overwhelm of consumption, and how do we do a better job helping our children adopt minimalist practices early so they don’t find themselves struggling through similar situations later in life?
Do you believe you still would have adopted minimalism even if you had not “had it all”?

Wow! This fact finally hit home with me : carrying debt means your time is already allocated. I'm 62 and still working. How much time do I actually have left? I'm not a stupid person but this was pivotal for me. I just had to let you know how your words have made an impact and literally stopped me in my tracks. These were the words I was searching for - a call to action. Many blessings to you both! ❤️

I worked for a family that would give each of their kids more than a hundred gifts every Christmas. They would complain about every gift because it wasn't the color they wanted or any other detail of every gift. They didn't appreciate them. They wanted simple things but the parents didn't know because they were too busy to talk to them. After opening all the gifts they decided to play with the coloring books and coloring pencils I got them at Dollar store. That's what they really wanted but the parents thought it was too little

Been a huge fan since 2016 and have had a constant battle with stuff. It wasn’t until 2018 where I just got rid of 70% of my stuff. Unfortunately, after my weight loss and my confidence came back, I bought more stuff. I’m slowly getting back to getting rid of my stuff little by little the past few weeks. I appreciate all that you guys do! Thank you!

For me, seeing my parents working so hard has made me value more the true cost of money and helped me to not fall into the materialism lifestyle

I first thought about living with less when I first watched/read Fight Club when I was 18. The idea of owning no more than what I need - the "Things you own, end up owning you" - was appealing to me, but I never knew how to enact it in my life. When I first came across the idea of minimalism a year ago, Fight Club was one of the first thing which popped into my mind. Today I got rid of a bunch of DVD's I own(ed), but I kept a handful, and Fight Club was one of them, as it's one movie I can watch over and over again and still get meaning out of it.

After a few months of minimizing, I'm finally listening to your podcast. I watched and loved the documentary this week. I'm usually listening to the podcast as I clean or declutter! Thanks for inviting us into this part of your life. What prompted me to comment was the concept of "what do you do?" My finances are hard, but I recently quit my 40 hr/week job in order to live the way I crave. I have a few jobs, some unpaid, doing things that I enjoy with a diverse schedule that gives me the kind of challenge I need. My answer to "what do you do?" is always a sigh (because the answer I have to give is longer than the one they asked for) and a list of things I love!

I always love these podcasts! Sometimes I do small 7 day challenges, when i feel that the "stuff" around me creeps in on me.. My boyfriend always thinks i'm crazy during those moments, haha! But a nice clean and tidy house (with not so much "stuff" lying around..) is just the best! :)

What I'm thinking about is music I love listening to music but is the constant consumption on new music or more hoarding music you love but don't listen to often after a year or so.

Another great podcast. I like that you guys discuss different topics as well. To quote Ryan "Fuels this fire that I don't want to burn" in relation to news etc that doesn't have a good impact on you personally afterwards I completely agree. I have in the past literally had to cover my ears from being told information which I knew would have a negative impact on me. On a different note you were talking about albums and two great ones I recommend you try out by a fellow Scotsman (although I'm a Scottish lady haha) Paolo Nutini "Last Night in the Bittersweet" that's his newest album but also try out "Sunny Side Up" from few years back. Some good happy tunes in their as well as meaningful ones. All the best to you both. And thanks again for the helpful advice you provide us all with. I often find myself laughing along with you two and nodding in agreement 😂

If you find yourselves on I40 in Tennessee between Nashville and Knoxville, there is a small town Asian Eatery in Crossville, Tn, called Ah Mah and Sons, they have amazing Pad Thai. It's a recipe passed down through generations. Totally worth the detour!

A new way to help please let people that are poor and already minimalist how to become a new minimalist. We are lucky to afford the basics. I do not like people much but would like to donate for the animals that are abused by our people. Even though that is due to consumerism.. also. I have always loved animals but having to give so many away or because people would yell at me for taking their side it becomes hard and turns you away for people. I am almost 70 sick and can no longer work. Taught our value was in our work. I know longer have any value. Please help. Saw your movie yesterday. Loved it. Just have to get rid of the consumerism. Then almost there. Thanks

This podcast starts at 15min. What it is actually about, is answering questions from people with the same answers you've already heard hundreds of times. Sometimes word by word.
