There were lots of other highlight programs and sports talk shows besides ESPN in the 80s and 90s. Even local sports segments had them. The three major networks and Fox had some form of what ESPN offered. A couple, like Sports Machine and Jim Rome were pretty big and doing it before Cold Pizza and Stuart Scott, but you'd have to be older than a certain age to know this. They stopped because their focus was critical news, and pretty much handed the reins to an actual sports network. The change at ESPN is like MTV going from music videos to every other thing except music videos. This isn't new.

I have never cared about who breaks some news 30 seconds before someone else. I don't care if I hear about it the next day. It changes nothing. I don't care about hot takes culture and entertainment reporting. My entertainment comes from watching the games. I watch independent KZbin channels that cover the league in depth, objectively, and channels that cover my team. I have never relied on ESPN in my life. That's for mouthbreathers.

i love all these videos about how we want the informational serious guys on espn but guess what, those guys don't have what the general audience is looking for. ENTERTAINMENT! sure you can listen to woj or zach lowe talk about basketball but over time we know it will get boring. That's why we have talking heads like SAS that provides the shock value or ENTERTAINMENT. say what you will but the general audience wants to be entertained, they want to listen to people arguing, they want the back and forth, etc... people might not like it but it is what it is.

"more charismatic"??? Geez, Mike. I know who I'll go to when I want to know who's the coolest purveyor of sports gossip. Sports itself is a very peripheral activity, unimportant in the grand scheme of things, and jabbering about it is of even lesser importance, no matter how many 0s you put behind the dollar sign. Try to keep some perspective, before you find yourself doing wardrobe rankings for sports commenters.
