I'm switching over to the Essential phone for now. If you've never held a ceramic/titanium phone in your hand, you need to try it. Get to a store that carries this thing and test it out. A ceramic back, bonded to a titanium frame feels awesome and is incredibly strong. Thanks for watching my stuff!

mrqwerty005 After hearing that they were changing the camera up a bit, I was hoping they would opt for a wide angle lens like the LG V30, but they did not. My 3T still works perfectly, so I want to upgrade to something clearly better. The 5T isn't worth it to me. If it had that wide angle camera and maybe an IP68 rating, I'd consider it. My eyes are currently set on the V30 though.

I have the feeling that just like with the IR-Blaster the headphone-jack will come back in a couple years as a "premium"-feature
@bonedatt7 жыл бұрын
PixelSheep... But the IR blaster isnt coming back. It's not like it always existed on phones back in the day and then resurfaced.

PixelSheep nowadays IR is irrelevant on phones.
@brianmsahin7 жыл бұрын
PixelSheep I agree the removal of the headphone jack will be seen as a stupid move and will return. However, I don't think the IR blaster has a future. I just took a look around my own house. My smart tv, my 3 air-conditioning units, my audio system, my house security system and camera all work via apps. There's no old style remote controller in my home, and it won't be long before there's none in any home. The headphone jack is about having top class audio quality and no worries about charging headphones. The IR blaster is like the steam locomotive. It's days are over.

To be fair, I don't mind switching over to Bluetooth at all. In fact, I've been using the Google Pixel with Bluetooth headphones (I admittedly wire in when using it with my Surface tho). But then again I guess I'm in the minority where people can accept the lack but hey it's just an opinion. I mean a majority of people are asking for something that's starting to be rare, and I can understand their pain (or frustration), so why don't companies give them what they're asking for, right?

2:07 no that's the path that Apple chose to take, and the fact that other phone companies aren't brave enough to defy their dongle-bearing overlords is a detriment to consumers. I'm not looking to buy a phone, then 100$ worth of accessories in order to have maximum functionality. It's not "the hype is real" it's me questioning what everyone seems to think is "innovation", or at least what Apple thinks is "innovation".
@ghostedragon9647 жыл бұрын
Frederick X. Well, That's why I have this feeling that MANY of the people who supports Bluetooth over headphone jack is the new 'thing', they r Apple users.
@lhk70067 жыл бұрын
people choose Apple's path because Apple has proven themselves to be right over decades. Firewire? Gone. Floppy disc? Gone. Optical drive? Gone. USB-A? Fading. There are legit reasons to remove the headphone jack. The most significant one being the audio quality is no longer limited to your phone. Because lightning and USB-C only outputs digital. So the quality of the audio is determined by your headphone's DAC and material. No more bottlenecking.
@fredxu997 жыл бұрын
Yes, but inconveniencing your users so that they are forced to switch to a "new" technology? Don't get me wrong, I understand the benefits of transitioning to Bluetooth and Thunderbolt-3 and the potential of this stuff is amazing, but the fact of the matter is we're still grabbing dongles off the shelves so that we can use our "fading" technology. Design philosophy and cutting-edge risk-taking aside, in the end these moves are inconveniencing the user. If you're an enthusiast it likely won't perturb you, but for those of us just looking for day-to-day usage, it's a detriment.
@lhk70067 жыл бұрын
So how are we going to transit to a new technology if people can't bear the transition period? The same applies to why USB-C gains such controversial despite OEMs have added USB-C for years. Apple is the only OEM who ditched legacy ports entirely to force the industry to move forward. Without inconvenience, progression is not achievable.
@fredxu997 жыл бұрын
I would understand if Thunderbolt 3 and Bluetooth became more mainstream. Current devices CAN use Thunderbolt 3 and USB at the same time. Current devices CAN use Bluetooth or the headphone jack at the user's discretion. So again, I see no point why they would bother to jump the gun so quickly. But I suppose only enthusiasts would consider ditching all of their flash drives, all of their headphones, all of their old hardware, just because their new fancy MacBook and iPhone are being "innovative" by ditching your devices. Sure, Apple can say "we were right" 5-6 years down the line, but in the present I'm sorry, for most users we would like to have our daily lives run a bit more smoothly than what Apple is proposing at the moment.

Dear Dave Lee, Tensile and Yield strength are a measurement of a materials resistance to given load that provokes an equivalent stress that is compared to the reference max values that you present on that table, which is different from Hardness. Hardness is a measurement of a materials resistance to indentation (usually by a diamond tip of different geometries) and it can be measured in different scales, like Brinell, Vickers or Rockwell depending on the method used. Best Regards.

False. BLE 4 supported data rates of 800kbps. MP3s max out at 360kbps. FLAC files can utilize bitrates up to 1,400kbps which is the limit for BLE5. I would trust the DAC in some sennheiser wireless headphones over anything Samsung or Apple puts out.

Imho Fingerprint sensor on the back is a nogo! And the lack of a headphone jack is also a big minus!
@PhilippSeeger7 жыл бұрын
Couldn't agree more on the fingerprint sensor position and it's strange that so few people actually seem to have a problem with that. Any other side would be better than the back. You can't unlock your phone with the fingerprint sensor on the back, if it's mounted to a car or bike for navigation, or in general most cases where you interact with the device from the front without holding it in your hand, for example while tied to your arm while running, reading sheet music whilst holding an instrument from it, or following a cooking recipe with the phone lying flat on the table and you're not having both hands free, and so on, and so on....
@GeryS.7 жыл бұрын
An unlocking mechanism should always be reachabel imho. So it has to be on the front or on the side. Picking the phone up every time to unlock it, is just bullshit. I wanna unlock it even when it lays flat on it's back.
@IO98027 жыл бұрын
Gery S. _"Picking the phone up every time to unlock it"_ Exactly. Which is why it's much better to put the sensor on the back. You've just proven yourself wrong, bud. The back of the phone is a much more ergonomically correct location for a fingerprint scanner. That's common knowledge really, unless you have really weirdly shaped hands.
@GeryS.7 жыл бұрын
IO9802 Are you dumb or what, i don't wanna pick up the phone to unlock it! When it lays flat on it's back show me how to unlock your "backside fingerprinter phone".
@IO98027 жыл бұрын
Gery S., When it's laying on its front, show me how to unlock your "frontside fingerprint phone". Thought so. The way most people hold their phones, i.e. palm touching the _back_ cover, not the screen, it's much easier to put the phone face down , not face up. So I'm not exactly sure who the dumb one is here.

My point is more to do with how he says that the smartphone market is trending towards having no headphonejack. As someone who has a lower end phone and can't afford to shell out a lot of money on new headphones, especially wireless ones, i do not wish to see the headphonejack being removed. One can argue that it means there's more room for "cooler tech" but with the amount of space the headphonejack really takes up i'm very skeptical. If the no headphonejack trend only stays within flagships then I'm fine with that since it shouldn't affect someone like me. However, this worries me that companies will start pushing the idea of removing this. And you can talk about "moving forward" as much as you want but bear in mind that moving forward is something that is expensive and the majority can't afford. However, I do get your comment and it is my fault for not being more clear about what i was complaining about and for that i apologise.

Galaxy S8 so much better. Wireless charging, water resistance, expandable storage, iris scanner, headphone jack, better screen (AMOLED vs LCD), VR support (LCD = no VR), DEX support, and available from all carriers.

Guy Lloyd if Apple didn’t get rid of it, no one else would. Bluetooth has become affordable and much more convenient
@FoodFighter467 жыл бұрын
Well, last few years have been a big bang for Bluetooth earphone/headphones. I'd rather wear wireless one in crowded places or while I'm exercising. Audio quality? If you are searching for audio quality phones are not the right choice. Go get portable high end player and amps to fulfil your good pair of earphones. I think people demand portability more nowadays. I think for 2017 it is more essential to have better Bluetooth system than keeping earphone jacks.

Guy Lloyd this has nothing to do with apple. Initially I thought removing the Jack was utter stupidity but even after so.many negative comments from Android users iPhone 7/7+ are still one of the most selling phones and xiaomi htc essential have followed them . To Essential's defence they have included 2 ways for charging the phone from the port and from the upper modular ports. So you CAN charge and listen to music at the same time which was the main letdown for me by the removal of the Jack.

Last I checked my new galaxy S8 had a headphone jack. Plus it's amazingly small. So the whole space saver argument is invalid. Looking at you Apple*

Totally different phone. Mi Mix is gigantic, has it's own UI skin and the camera's are just average.

We don't want "It lasts a day with heavy use" crap. Just tell us the average Screen in time of the device.
@Thisath1007 жыл бұрын
Adrian Jonathan he can't because people use their devices very differently and a load of things affect SOT. Its not a good way to accurately explain the battery. Lasts a day is about as accurate because it's not promising anything specific like the amount of hours would.
@xperr77 жыл бұрын
Adrian Jonathan And define a day. I want to know if it can support at least 16 hours of heavy usage (also define heavy usage) at the least, not if it can last a work/school day
@Ironkhight7 жыл бұрын
i dont think any phone can support 16 hours of heavy usage bud, thats just unrealistic

Personally I don't think neither headphone jacks or SD card expansion are essencial, I mean think about it, does 128G not enough ??? If one port can do everything why add another one ? I own an IPhone and not having a jack doesn't even bother me like for real I kind of prefer this way....
@MrEnklave7 жыл бұрын
128Gb is enough for no SD card slot for almost all people. But no jack means another piece of cable I need to carry around, un/plugging it from phone and from headphones because I used them with notebook as well. And I use jack every day for few hours. And the BT sound quality is just meh compared to cable quality.
@Kevin-it4fh7 жыл бұрын
MrEnklave I guess just ditch the wired headphones and get a new pair. I'm stuck in the same situation myself

Dave, awesome video as always, very thorough and professional. I just wanted to make a small point of clarification...tensile strength and hardness are correlated, but they are not the same. The relationship is different between hardness and tensile strength especially depending on the material (e.g. ceramics act differently from metals, and metals change that relationship based on things like their grain coarseness, amongst other things). Hardness would ideally be measured in a hardness measurement like the Rockwell or Brinell scale. Anyways, just wanted to get that out there, and keep up the good work!

I have the phone for 2 years now. And still going strong. Updates are coming through. Original charger 9s still working and the charger cable itself has no tears and cuts. Scratch free for two years. Camera can be better. With more useful options. Bloatware free which was why I chose ph1 in the first place. Using it on VZ. Used it with Airtel in India while vacationing without issues. Classy phone and well built. Would definitely recommend even after launched two years ago. God Bless.
