I remember the first time I heard this song, I was walking past the record store (Annie, that's a shop where we used to have to BUY music) in my local mall and I heard the opening keyboard riff. I stopped, listened for a few seconds, then walked in and said, "what is this awesomeness and give it to me." I was about 16 at the time.

I Lived in Uppands-Väsby at the time in mid-eighties when they were at their height and the members of Europe lived in Väsby, well John Norum in the band has a sister named Tone Norum whom I helped out when she had problems with her car, I didn't reflect over who she is at the time and got that knowledge a while later, she also got into music, and though I didn't get starstruck it felt kind' a nice when she said "hello" when we met... She also had a couple of hits :) I also had the pleasure to see the band live a couple of times in the early days !

When I was at Wacken in 2008 I managed to get almost to the front when Airbourne played by following all the crowd surfers. And when Iron Maiden played it was so full that some people couldn't even get inside the security gates that separates the area where the stages are and the rest of the festival. Also, a funny thing about being up front and being squashed. At that Iron Maiden concert, my friend, who's a huge Iron Maiden fan, had waited up front from like 12:00 until they started playing around 21:00, and during the first seconds of the first song (Aces High) everyone basically went apeshit crazy and he was pushed back like 30 meters.

Just wanted to say the reason that the crowd is so large is that it is Wacken, a festival with multiple bands. They are not all there to see Europe. I have been to many Europe gigs in the last few years and the crowds are really not that much of a mix of ages, and nowhere near this big. Yeah you will get the odd young fan etc, but mostly its middle aged people like me.

This is the Wacken show which was a part of the 25th Anniversary celebration and ended with the Sweden Rocks Headline show in their hometown of Stockholm and had tons of special guests including Scott Gotham from Thin Lizzy …… Anyway back to the main event ….. Europe are one of my all time fave artists and such nice guys too …. Ive met them many times over the years and sat chatting pre gig too and having a laugh. They are still going today and working on the follow up to their 15th album Walk The Earth …. You need to listen to Rock The Night, Carrie & Cherokee from the Final Countdown album and then Superstitious, Open Your Heart, Seven Doors Hotel, Stormwind, Prisoners In Paradise, Got To Have Faith, Flames, Always The Pretenders, Hero, War Of Kings, Walk The Earth, Pictures, Days of Rock n Roll, Rainbow Bridge, Let The Good Times Rock & I’ll Cry For You …… some great hits and deep cuts there for you to listen to …… an amazing live act and to think The Final Countdown turned 30 years old back in 2016 & I was there at the Roundhouse in London for the taping of the official BluRay etc and they sounded just as good as they did when I saw them back in 1986 with my best friend Samm at the Playhouse in Edinburgh ….. we are still best friends and as mad on Europe and other bands we discovered back then ….. she’s even got her son educated in “good music” she caught him in his bedroom behind a closed door rocking out to Bon Jovi Living On A Prayer …….. very proud moment and I had a tear too …… got to listen to more of these guys and you’ll see why we love them so much !!!

I got to see Joey back in 1989 at the Hammersmith Apollo as a guest of Darren Wharton's new band Dare. I had never seen Europe live, though I knew their music, I managed to miss their Uk shows, mostly because they were a little to pretty, I was more into the heavier music back then. When Joey came on stage the crowd got a little quiet, it was pretty clear I wasn't alone in my music tastes, anyways, I have to say this, Joey is one of a very small number of singers that sounds better live than recorded (at least at that time) he rocked that theater.

The thing about this song, iconic as it is, is that it's actually not very representative of the band's overall style (also nowhere near their best song, but that's just like, my opinion, man). Europe are an amazing band, and rather than this cheesy synth-driven stuff, their real forte is the more down-to-earth blues rock style. Their last millennium material has its share of classics, but it's actually their post-reunion material where they truly shine. Start from the Dark and Secret Society were cool albums, more modern sounding hard rock kinda stuff, but from there they started turning up the retro dials, and IMO their 2015 album War of Kings is not only the band's best album, but one of the best hard rock albums of the last two decades if not all time. It's just chock-full of great riffs, wonderful solos and immensely soulful vocals. Anyone who loves classic hard rock should absolutely give it a listen.

First of all yes I think piercings are a great way of expression but make sure you pick a really good piercer! Will make the experience better, minimize scar tissue etc. Secondly I'd like to share a story. In my highschool days when the seniors were close to being done every day there'd be a countdown to the last day of school show during lunch by the different classes (we are divided into classes of 20-30 and there's maybe 7-8 of those in one year so not exactly the same as in the US). Anyhow during these shows every other year at the end they'd play Gorky park - Bang and every other year it'd be the final countdown. When my class was doing it because it was a music class we decided that instead of playing it over the speakers the music kids would learn it and they played this song live on stage in the cafeteria with people dancing and having a great time! Absolutely timeless. love that you decided to react to it!

lol Yep. It was originally made just to be a concert opener. Apparently, this is what Tempest said in an interview: `Tempest stated: "It’s always a nice feeling. Sometimes you hear it on the streets or someone has it on their mobile phone or something… it’s a nice feeling! Actually, I did an interview about a year ago with a newspaper from America and they talked about how much it’s been used in sports in America… which I didn’t know so much about. Apparently it has been used a lot and it was nice to hear. The ironic thing, though, is that the song was actually written for the fans. It was over six minutes long and was never meant to be a hit or anything like that. It was meant to be an opening for the “live” show. We were putting out our third album and we wanted a really “grand” opening for the show. So, I had that “riff” tucked away in a drawer since my college years and I took it out, found a tempo for it, wrote lyrics and it turned out to be a great opening for that album and for the show as well. Nowadays, we don’t rehearse it but when we play it live, it is still just so amazing! It does communicate so well with the audience and we really love playing it."... "Interview: Joey Tempest (Europe)". Rockeyez. Retrieved 2008-06-24. Apparently the other band members were mixed on it and the guitarist didn't want it at all. Tempest fought for it. 'The Final Countdown', my reaction was: 'No, this is nuts. We just can't use this,'" guitarist John Norum said, "Thank God they didn't listen to me." ... Ling, Dave (January 2005). "Counting Down Again".Classic Rock (75): pp. 60-67.` From: dictionary.sensagent.com/the%20final%20countdown%20(song)/en-en/#cite_note-rockeyez-9

A very long long time ago getting tattoos and piercings were a sing of individuality and expressing yourself. Those days are long gone. These days it shows you are just following everybody else and likely don't have a a unique personality. A younger person without tattoos and face piercings really stands out from the rest. In a perfect world people wound't judge others by things like that but it's not a perfect world and you will be judged by others. They say don't judge a book by it's cover but it's such an important process of getting a book ready to be shown to the public. Like it or not first impressions are extremely important.
