So let's dig deeper into this. If you check the "Titles, Tunes, and Meters" section of the hymn book, you can find the meter of the song, which is appropriately called "Ocean Wave" and the meter is 6 6 6 6 (12 lines). The reason this is important is that every song with a similar meter can be sung to this tune and in a similar fashion. Songs in this meter include... ... Sadly, after as little research, I have found that there are no other songs that match this meter perfectly. However, the 2 songs "Thy Servants Are Prepared" and "We Love Thy House, O God" can be sang to this tune, except 3 verses of them fit into 1 verse of "Who's on the Lord's Side"... ... Even better! "Thy Servants Are Prepared" is a missionary song that can be sung like pirates, sounding like an intense Deus Vult tavern shanty.

I grew up very Christian. We had a similar pirate song but I don't recall singing it at church, I think it was sung at some youth groups. Mostly we sang it at the top of our lungs while on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland. It was sung to the actual Pirates of the Caribbean melody but with Christian lyrics. It went, "Yo ho yo ho the Christian Life for me, we read we sing we laugh we pray the Christian life for me, I know my Lord is coming soon coming for you and me so yo ho yo ho the Christian life for me." Sometimes someone would get embarrassed and I couldn't figure out why. Lol! I just want to add that this was way before the movies ever came out.

We ask it fearlessly: Who’s on the Lord’s side? Who? We wage no common war, Cope with no common foe. The enemy’s awake; Who’s on the Lord’s side? Who? [Chorus] Who’s on the Lord’s side? Who? Now is the time to show. We ask it fearlessly: Who’s on the Lord’s side? Who? 2. We serve the living God, And want his foes to know That, if but few, we’re great; Who’s on the Lord’s side? Who? We’re going on to win; No fear must blanch the brow. The Lord of Hosts is ours; Who’s on the Lord’s side? Who? 3. The stone cut without hands To fill the earth must grow. Who’ll help to roll it on? Who’s on the Lord’s side? Who? Our ensign to the world Is floating proudly now. No coward bears our flag; Who’s on the Lord’s side? Who? 4. The pow’rs of earth and hell In rage direct the blow That’s aimed to crush the work; Who’s on the Lord’s side? Who? Truth, life, and liberty, Freedom from death and woe, Are stakes we’re fighting for; Who’s on the Lord’s side? Who

Okay, as a member of the same church and singing this hymn myself, this joke brought tears to my eyes. I will never look at this hymn the same way again.

Funny stuff that evokes other musical Mormon memories, such as 1.) As a Primary music leader or pianist, going through ALL the verses of “Follow the Prophet” to that lovely goosestep rhythm and never failing to get a slight headache from it. P.S.... It DIDN’T help me to learn the history of this song’s composition, esp the intent. 2.) My husband’s aversion to how SLOWLY and DIRGELIKE so many LDS congregations sing their hymns... especially sacrament hymns... and most especially “Come, Come, Ye Saints”. Actually, the only way he can stand that one is as a polka. 3.) My shock in meeting to hear my peers sing alternative lyrics such as, “Choose the rice when LaChoy is placed before you”... or my sister insisting that “I Am A Child of God” says “parents kinda weird” 4.) Feeling awkward as a YW and YSA whenever the word breast or bosom was in a hymn. Such as in verse 2 of “Sweet Is The Work”. Agh. 5.) Those really ODD hymns whose melodies just didn’t fit the lyrics... Such as Hymn 114, “Come Unto Him”. To me it sounds like a merry-go-round calliope organ. 6.) When we used to have a hymn practice time after sacrament meeting... we had an excellent chorister who tried, unsuccessfully, to get LDS people to think more seriously about the words and music. So she’d have us sing a well-known song to a different melody from the hymn book that had the same meter. People in our ward got SO IRRITATED with her. I don’t know if they were purists or what. Meanwhile, my kids grew up singing Michael Card’s much more joyous version of “How Firm A Foundation” (See his Be My Vision album) 7.) Trying not to squirm out of my skin or die an agonizing death as I sat torturously still while enduring yet another female soloist hit the highest, climactic notes of an oversung song so painfully off-pitch that my microbiome almost went extinct within me. 8.) The sublime pleasure, as ward organist, of practicing my favorite anthem-like hymns like “Now Thank We All Our God” in an empty chapel, in an empty building, with the volume up as high as my eardrums could stand.

Dad: oO(How can I wrangle it so I can feel like a salty dog in Sacrament Meeting?) Steve: Dad, what hymns should we sing at my farewell? Dad (seizing his chance): Anything you like, son, as long as it's not the pirate hymn! **He then demonstrates said hymn in full piratey style** Steve: WE HAVE TO SING THAT ONE NOW Dad: oO(Arrr, me mission be accomplished!)

It did make me smile and laugh, thanks for sharing. I did come into the video thinking it was going to be Amazing Grace, since John Newton was something of a pirate before he got saved, a real blackguard for sure in many of his lost in sin manners and habits, but I thought mostly because it's so popular and song all the time. I'm not sure if I've heard Who is on the Lord's side or not, but I'm looking forward to it now. A vast ye land lubbers (lovers)! The history on hymns is that many of the tunes are borrowed from saloons and dance hall songs of their times, so it would be familiar for singing in church to many when they came.

My ancestor is red beard the pirate ( Roland Tarpley ) and I believe he was Irish, so he just may have talked like this.
