It shows they want to put the time into their own vehicles and learn, instead of tossing money to someone to do it for them. Agree that it’s probably the needle bearing. Toyota actually had a recall or a tsb on it. Not every vehicle experiences the issue, but my 2nd Gen definitely did. Put it in 4WD and see if it goes away. Quickest way to diagnose the needle bearing
@fastfreeks
@fastfreeks 6 жыл бұрын
It's those stock Toyota needle bearings where the CV's slide into the axle it's just a poor design. When there is more angle on the CV it adds load to that bearing and breaks the bearing case. BTW they break on stock trucks that get used offroad so as far as the lift goes that bearing doesn't care what brand lift you have that angle is always the same. The diff drop will help for the street but once you start cycling the suspension offroad it will damage the bearing again, the diff drop can also cause other problems as well like too much CV axle plunge that can damage the inner CV joint and now you just changed the angle of the input yoke. Basically the diff drop is a band aid you will need to pull that bearing out and install the aftermarket bushing those wont break. Nice truck, once you get that sorted it will be trouble free.

Angles on the cv axles doesnt hurt them. they can handle that. If ur clunking like that it can be very well the bushing inside the diff going bad or you may or may not have a bad CV axle...another thing you can try n do is taking ur lift kit off and seeing how the noise is afterwards, it may be a pain in the butt but id sooner look at that before throwing money at everything else. If the noise is still there, get it on a lift and start getting a closer look at the noise while its rotating.

I'm not sure what those are, usually everything would be almost perfectly straight or very close, with this lift, nothing was really changed too much out of those original alignments. I do not have a Tacoma ... but I do have an 18 runner ... with the revtek 3in front and 2in rear ... it DID come with the diff drop ... I have now put nearly 5k miles on it within 2 months with zero issue. My guess is you should have installed the diff drop from the get go ... and my other guess is that the CV is prolly damaged now ... simply lowering the diff now will not fix something that has already pre-maturely worn. Sorry bro, on one side great looking truck, on the other side ... if you did do the research as many have mentioned ... most of it specifically states that 3in pushing it to say it mildly ... I would have incorporated all the tricks to mitigate any issues ... as many have said 3in is borderline/absolute maximum these rigs can take ... I risked it ... but I also bought the kit that employed every trick I could read about. It’s pre-mature wear plain and simple ... can’t reverse it ... time for some new parts

Third Gen Tacomas are simply not fit for low budget lift. Mine is a '23, had to reverse a 2" lift because all the known noises vibrations and issues. As comparison my wife drives a lifted 24' Frontier (6" inches) and my off road truck is a 2005 Nissan Titan with 4" lift never had any single issues with both Nissan and the Titan we do heavy mud/off roading. Thats the crazy reason why you see some companies developing portal axles to the third gen tacomas.

If the camera footage period is little longer I would have figure it out but the sound for sure is a Bering coming from the black middle axel arm which has two rubber boots, I think something is cracked in there... needs to observe and listen carefully ...you may switch that axel from the left to the right side under passenger seat and see if the noise goes, that’s one way to check what’s going on...

It’s definitely the cv in your gopro footage it looks like a roller bearing is out you can see the wobble in the shaft It’s a cheap easy replacement but I wouldn’t stay stock on it they make a ton of after market heavy duty cv shafts more money but they will handle a lot more load and not care about the angle of the cv all these guys that rag should read more drop spacers aren’t necessary if you have the right components to fit your travel those spacers don’t do much at max travel and that tire goes from free spin to load stock shafts weren’t intended to handle that with increased angle range but ya bro the trucks legit and as most motor enthusiasts you should know with any vehicle you plan to make your own your never done till you sell it and that’s a fact but good luck bro I look forward to the outcome

I have a 17 TRD off-road Tacoma and throughout my research I went with a BDS 6 inch lift with coil overs. I did have a shop do the work for it because there was some cutting involved with dropping the front diff far enough. I have not had any issues so far with over 5000 miles and some tough off-road use over 700 miles of it from rock, to sand, dirt you name it. All this said I did not get the noise you are experiencing even others said I would get that noise. Needle bearing .... Just like everyone else with a lifted Tacoma. The fact that it's only on one side confirms it, since needle bearing is only on one side of the differential. Dropping the diff kind of defeats the purpose of lifting your truck as you're losing your ground clearance. If you only have 1 or 2 inch lift the difference in CV angle shouldn't make a huge difference, except perhaps for the CV boots wearing out faster. The big problem is the way the CV axles are attached to the differential. On one side you have a ball bearing, which isn't bothered At All by the additional angle on the CV, the other side as a needle bearing, which as you could imagine would have more of a problem with increased CV angle. There are replacement bearings for it that are manufactured by East Coast Gear Supply. You can install it yourself, their videos on the internet on how to do it.
