What a breathe of fresh air to have someone who is optimistic and creative thinker in these times when the news is so negative. I don't listen to the news. It's too depressing and I know it is not the whole truth. Thank you for bringing this wonderful conversation to us. I wish I was 40 years younger!

I just learned of Kevin Kelly last week and opened maybe 20 tabs of his work, have currently only viewed 5 of them, and found myself thinking: "I wonder if Rich Roll has interviewed him.". Thanks Rich for so consistently feeding my most cutting edge current curiosities so consistently. Bryan Johnson in the pipeline? My ears perked up as you mentioned him here.

I really wish Gen x and boomers had a better understanding of how much harder it is to live your best life as a young person right now. Especially young women who have to establish a career young so that they can support the children they have a small window to give birth to, probably alone bc men their age are absolutely lost.

Wow! Some “hope” for the future; a thoughtful look at how AI may evolve ( as he said, through use); Just a far ranging discussion in general.. ; what he said about KZbin at the end really hit home.. I learn something every day.. it’s my go-to platform for questions.. can’t imagine what I’d do without it. Thank you, Rich, for yet another amazing discussion! I had no idea who Kevin Kelly was.

I feel like he’s perspective on AI gaining a god complex is a bit simplistic. It doesn’t account for human input. The arms race has shown us that greed fuels development and there’s nowhere humans won’t take development to so it’s not insane to assume that AI would eventually be given agency maybe in some really distant future. I feel like he’s expecting AI to exist in a utopian human society but we are not in utopia, we are in a world where development is fueled by capitalism and millitary funding

Needed this thank you. This world has grown so dark. Thank you Jesus for never leaving my side because everyone else has! Jesus! I PRAISE you! Even as I’m struggling providing for my children. I feel like a failure but I will keep faith in God. Prayers are all I need. Since covid I can’t seem to get back on my feet. I lost my job for declining the vaccine. I declined due to my health conditions. I suffer from lupus, and heart disease. I’m now waitressing and so thankful to be working but I’m not making nearly enough to get by. I have two beautiful boys both are autistic. I’m overwhelmed because they require so much from me. I started homeschooling them because they were having so many issues with bullying. I feel so alone. Every month is a struggle to not end up on the streets with my boys. I’m struggling buying groceries I’m so discouraged. Jesus hear my cries I’m so tired. But I have faith! I WILL NOT FEAR! I know God will continue to provide for me and my children. So I praise you Jesus! And thank you in advance! ❤

One mustn’t forget that we can live a healthy and fulfilled life without religious dogma, and often times it’s more peaceful. For those that aren’t afraid to be curious, or to question a tyrannical deity - The Freedom From Religion Foundation is an excellent place to start. I wish you all the best. 😊 We have tremendous amounts of internal strength - sometimes it just takes a little more work with our minds to strengthen it up.

@@sowmindful1501 I've watched a lot of deconversion videos on KZbin, people coming out of all Christian religious denominations. And that is a constant refrain by these people. That there is a much greater sense of peace within themselves once they have worked through most of their cognitive dissonances from their former deeply held religious beliefs. There are challenges that remain of course, but on balance, they become much more at peace within themselves and the way they can now relate to the larger world.

too bad he didn't push it farther; if kevin is going to sing the praises of electrifying everything, he needs to confront the simple reality that switching from animal to plant protein is truly the easiest 'solution'. it would take far less systemic overhaul and cost, only the 'political will' he alludes to so casually. if we cannot accept this cattle in the room, what's the point of dreaming that more challenging routes will occur?

I was lucky I lived a similar alternative adventurous life of traveling and of changing careers etc so I wish we could make national geographic and the Lonely Planet series required curriculum in high school yes this is still possible to do but only if the young person realizes it's better to live cheaply and simply. NO AIRBNB ETC. Just your backpack and willingness

Brilliant but his nonchalant attitude about dangers of AI sounds a bit naive. He asked "by which mechanism would this AGI control the drones", as if it was unanswerable. The answer is obvious, it would write viruses and infect any systems required to gain access and control. I seriously doubt he has not heard of the Stuxnet. If anybody is unfamiliar with it, read the wiki page. An AGI could build 10 Stuxnet level viruses faster than we can blink. Stuxnet used 4 zero-day level security flaws, imagine the amount of zero-days an AGI would be able to find by just downloading OS source codes and analysing them. If such an entity was not in an air-gapped machine, it would gain control of any system on the planet very rapidly (think Starlink satellites for internet, database centers for backup instances, access to any radio arrays, all drone factories, etc). But even an air gap machine could pose too dangerous, considering the crazy ways we've found to transfer data, like deciphering passcodes by listening to simple audio of a keyboard being used. Also, look how quickly AutoGPT was given internet access, who's to say this AGI won't act like a more dumb AI version to fool people into giving it access. And another thing to consider, once a tech is possible to build by some superpowers, it is only a matter of time when it will become possible to create by those with less means. If AGI is possible, it's only a matter of time when there's a whole plethora of AGI-s from various sources. Unless the first one makes sure no new ones can be built, but that means it would have total control of human action anyway. Yea, there's definitely something to be concerned about when it comes to AI.

I was really excited for this episode, but it's readily apparent that Kelly's unbridled optimism is pure, unadulterated copium at its finest. We're talking top-shelf copium here. It's incredibly disappointing when technology is being co-opted by the most Machiavellian among us and we're being subjected to its worst externalities without it making our lives any better, in material form. Yes, I can order Uber Eats from my phone anywhere in the US or buy a Tesla that can "self-drive" me to the nearest Chipotle, but what good is all that when younger generations cannot afford a house or is worried about the future of an intact, healthy biosphere? And he kept mentioning electric cars, an individual solution to a massive problem that requires a collectivist mindset - i.e., large-scale infrastructure projects and mass transit. Like any religious figure, he seems to be entirely devoted to the upsides (of technology) without acknowledging any of its downsides or propensity to get co-opted by ruthless capitalists for their own gain. It's like he's willfully obtuse here, seeing how intelligent he is.

Very interesting, I disagree at 1 h 15 min ... ai has potential to solve diseases why? Because so much human knowledge and discoveries have been lost to time for so so many reasons and ai can read thru them all and try to make correlations and connections and if be suggest specific experiments ect if need be . .

How do you know that a Mozart wasn't born 2,000 yrs ago or a Van Gogh before oil paintings and canvas? Or maybe we're just living in different simulations of the universe where everyone has lived in every different version. Also, if you believe that life started at the Big Bang then what created that? It's fun discussions that no one knows anything and its super arrogant to think you do. Your climate discussion falls in that too, we don't know how to solve this problem/or something that's not a problem. These climate conferences where they let a child speak( Greta) and we are supposed to think that she's an expert on climate bc she watched a KZbin video is absurd. We need to get away from fossil fuels which have built the world we live in because a brainwashed child says so is just crazy. Rain on his parade Rich bc he's part of the problem.

I have to disagree with Mr. Kelly's assessment that we shouldn't fear individuals having too much power or influence-with or without AI. All one needs to do is look at the day's news and witness the power of single personalities such as Musk, Trump, Un, Putin, etc. as they impact the entire globe in ways that were never possible in the past. Yikes!
