Every time I mention that I follow the ketogenic diet, all I hear is "Oh, you can't do that forever" "You'll just gain it all back". Unsolicited advice (hidden as criticism) is sometimes too much to deal with. I've started saying that I can't eat gluten. I get left alone. I'm monitored by a health care provider. My labs are great. I feel amazing and I've lost the weight that's plagued me all my life!

Actually for me Keto has been great. I am not hungry- I lost more than 60lbs. I have also added intermittent fasting. No more heartburn, I have energy and my doctor did full blood work after 1 year. Everything is great! I am ketoish- like the twins I am not pedantic about it. I eat what I want but I actually feel better when I eat keto - so I do. However if family stops for ice cream I eat it too but I feel good with just a scoop. I don’t crave sugar but when I do I eat the many low net carb bars. Anyway, it’s my new life.

Quote from the article: "Habit experts recommend a different way to eat healthy: creating simple, sensible eating routines that are easy to follow and can become almost hardwired over time." This is exactly what keto can be, a simple, sensible eating routine. I don't make decisions about what to eat all day long because I know the things I can eat, want to eat, and have ready to eat.

Keto has not only helped my physical health but my mental health as well - no brain fog, optimistic outlook, more energy. Restrictive - yes. I know more of what makes me feel poor or inflamed. But I would rather give up things that make me feel unwell. But I also find that there are so many creative ways to cook things. It has actually freed me to not constantly think of what I need to do for the next meal. Your realistic approach has helped me in my journey when other keto people were making it difficult - do this and that, too. Technically keto is sooo helpful.

Yup, it is a lifestyle. I accepted that when my doctor suggested Keto and it was the only thing in 10 years to improve my syndrome/health issues. I told myself I am building a lifelong habit, a lifestyle that I happily follow, because it made my health so much better with comparatively small effort. (Compared to things I used to try.)

I'm a complete carb-a-holic and sugar addict! It makes me sad sometimes when I realize I have to stay away from the carbs and that moderation is, unfortunately, just not possible for me. But it makes me even sadder to look at pictures of myself when I let myself go. But, oh well.... I feel better when I'm not laden with the carbs and sugar.... even if it does taste wonderful. I went through a period of mourning and about the only time I question if I can ever have sugar again is when a holiday comes up - there are so many sweet treats associated with fall, for instance. But I try to just think about something else and that feeling leaves me very quickly. We can do it!

Ceila, I am a carbaholic, too. But I've been 'clean and sober' since early in 2021. I recently attended the 'Kicking Sugar' summit and it really helped to know I wasn't the only one. They explained how sugar/carbs sets off the same things in your brain as cocaine. You need to understand that in order to try to get control. Try a pure carnivore diet for a few weeks (with plenty of fat) to help with satiety and cravings.

@@Bobbi-upnorth 😂 "clean and sober"! I'm going to use that! I have literally fallen off the wagon so many times and I know it's because I've always treated it like a "diet" with an end date. Gaining and losing the same 40lbs for almost a decade, but listening to the twins and finally coming to the realization that it's just something I'll have to stay away from forever because even one piece of bread or cupcake becomes 4 pieces or an entire day of sugar debauchery! I will have to look into a summit like that. I think it would really help me.....thanks for letting me know those even exist! I apparently live under a rock!

@TracieClaiborne
@TracieClaiborne Жыл бұрын
@@celiamccrea4615 for me personally, the way I manage my sugar addiction is that I have a list of low carb sugar free treats that I allow myself to have. I don’t struggle with them or binge them because the demon inside of me is tamed because I don’t eat carbs or sugar. Now some people can’t have Sugar-free treats because they binge and overeat them But to me, I would rather let myself have them in moderation and be able to enjoy them than to say I can never have a sweet taste again. I eat rebel ice cream weekly, there are quest protein bars that are peanut butter and chocolate crisp that are really good to me. I eat blueberries with zero sugar ready whip and strawberries. I just tell myself I can have blueberries and strawberries and whip cream or ice cream and I’ve gotten to where I enjoy that as much as I ever enjoyed sugar. I think the guilt of eating real sugar took away some of the pleasure of it because I knew it was killing me. It was absolutely going to kill me if I did not stop. So when I’m in the store and I see sweet treats, I think in my head poison poison death death death poison poison. That’s what it is. It’s killing our society. I never allow myself to have a sweet taste until I’ve had a nutritious meal. So, we just have to find ways to manage our addiction. My husband will eat an ice cream cone at Chick-fil-A in front of me but I just say to myself I’ll have something later but later I usually have moved on. If I ever think to myself, maybe I can eat sugar again, I remember that there is no amount of sugar that satisfies me. One candy bar or one cookie does not satisfy me, I have to have four candy bars or 10 cookies. There’s no end to how much sugar I could eat and still not be satisfied. It was like a demon inside of me and I’m never going to live that way again.

I so agree with comparing carb addiction with alcoholism. Actually carb addicts may not have to look far for the alcoholics in their family. There IS a connection. While eating the carbs the brain is thrilled. Then the rest of the day is foggy brain. When on the Keto, the mind is much clearer and thinking about what to eat is easier as the brain is working better. Ideas just come to you. Also, motivation is amazing. I felt my body was pulling me forward to do things vs eating mega carbs I have to push myself to think and move. . Seriously, it's like my feet were going faster forward than my mind could keep up. I must admit, I fell off. The fog brain took over with great excuses to chill with the thrill. Trying to push forward to get on again feels so heavy and the foggy brain supplies great excuses. I read or saw a vlog addressing the communication between the gut and the brain which promotes feeding the carb loving bacteria through maintaining a sense of false well-being. Your chats make sense. Keep them up as they'll help others try or get back on again. Wish me luck. 🙂

My biggest adjustment was to switch from thinking of this as a diet (that had an ending) and realizing it had to be a way of life. After I did that it was easy. Yes I've only been doing it for 3 months but I don't calculate anything. I read labels to make sure there isn't a bunch of crap in stuff (like ANY seed oils) but then simply have some protein, have a lot of leafy greens with some EVOO, at least 1/2 an avocado a day, and make sure my other veggies are lower carb. I've been drinking unsweetened ice tea for years so don't have to worry about carbs there and just had to learn to live without tortillas in S. TX (I can still get a breakfast taco but just eat the inside). I'm steadily losing weight but, at this point, am not really concerned with the speed. I could probably make it go faster if I tracked everything but to me THAT is the thing that isn't sustainable.
@MeiraV-
@MeiraV- Жыл бұрын
I tracked for the first 6 months, and then got tired of it. I weigh myself weekly -- if I see the scale go up more than premenstrual whatever (3-5 lbs) or I decide I want to weigh less, I will track again. But the BIG BIG thing for me is that it was 100 times easier than I thought it would be for a decade, and my body & mood feel SO MUCH BETTER than I ever imagined.

I lost 50lbs in 6 months with Keto. I have stopped but I love your channel. I have kept the weight off months later working out. I thought it was great but I lost my weight in places I didn’t want to and looked like a skinny stick. So I decided to eat carbs again but checking my calories and doing 10,000 step work outs. I did get my shape back but not the weight oddly. I will go back on keto when I’m ready too again. People think keto is zero carbs but that’s so wrong. They just don’t understand so they speak negative of it.

I started keto September 2nd, 2017 because both parents passed with severe Alzheimer’s and my mom and sister had breast cancer. Even though my focus was on metabolic health, I lost 60 lbs in 6 months. I love doing the exact opposite of what my doctor tells me and then listening to their rationalization as to why my labs are markedly better than before I started. I can definitely do this for the rest of my life because I love meat, eggs and cheese. Now I’m more “Ketovore “. My motto is beef, butter, bacon and eggs! The people who say this is unsustainable are the people with no self control or they want to sell you their diet.

Good talk! Love your attitude! I refer to people like the writers of this article as Keto-phobic. Like most "phobics", they don't understand so they are compelled to lash out instead of educating (or re-educating) themselves. I've been "technically keto" with IF for 2 1/2 years. Lost 45 pounds and mitigated T2D diagnosis. I cook and I'm still having a blast in the kitchen making keto stuff - CHAFFLES!!! So... For me, not too restrictive and the benefits far out weigh any so-called sacrifices made.

I'm so with you on this. Four and a half years for me. Don't count fat macros anymore...Don't run from fat but don't eat especially high fat. I eat about once a day too. Sometimes two (second very small), but time restricted eating since February of this year...So much nicer to not be cleaning the kitchen at night. I miss bread and pasta but I love the way I feel (and look). Sometimes plan to go off and then get right back on. Best food plan ever! 'Wish I found it years and years ago. Carbs are clearly addictive. I don't talk to Bob down the street about my food, or Sally (not even if she asks). I grew tired of defending my food choices.

This was a great conversation. Loved it. I hate that Keto has a negative connotation in the world. I am often reluctant to say I'm "eating Keto" so I say "I eat low carb." Maybe because I don't plan to eat Keto for the rest of my life, I want to gradually increase my count at maintenance but girls, I also eat OMAD and I honestly struggle to eat enough. Oh I am completely convinced KETO is the best way to go (for everyone, weight issues or not)!! I have struggled with weight for over 50 years and as I turn 63 today I am STILL struggling with carb addiction!! When I was living alone it was easy peasy, but now that I have other family staying here it is much more difficult because they are not KETO. But you ladies, watching you on here, is something that just honestly keeps me going, keeps me interested in continuing, and gives me continuous hope that I can still keep trying and NOT give up, regardless how much I mess up! I have learned so much from yall but the MAIN thing or most important thing I think I have learned from yall is it really IS a lifestyle!! The second is your “technically” approach! This IS doable and I will continue to work at changing my habits and making myself say no to carbs! Thank you ladies, I appreciate yall more than anyone else on this platform for making me realize this actually IS a doable lifestyle and I will continue to get back, even when I fall off here and there! Thanks!! I would LOVE to see yall do shows on IF, PSMF, label-reading, and socializing on this lifestyle (like family get-togethers, etc-how to stay KETO)

I spent so much time before keto counting calories, such a pain in the neck. And I restricted myself from eating cheese and cream which I love. Now I feel great, eat foods I really enjoy eating and I have lost more than I needed to and find it easy to keep off on keto. I do allow a non keto day once a week if I so choose, but it isn't a must. I don't feel restricted, I did on calorie counting. It only took a few months of starting keto and I stopped measuring everything.

I agree with your view points! I have four siblings, the majority of whom follow the traditional caloric restriction of limiting fat; another sibling who eats a “normal” diet, but whose spouse is also into minimizing fat intake and has influence over what is consumed at the dining room table…my brother who is closes to me sought my advice about a year ago as he was taking medication for type 2 diabetes. He saw pics of me where I had slimmed down to normal weight …and he asked for my advice. I told him about keto. Didn’t want to overwhelm him, so I said just eat protein and have a side of veggies. He has had some success but he sometimes falls off the rails. Spoke to him a couple weeks ago and asked him how he was doing on keto…he said it is off and on…related to work pressures….then he admitted as much to himself as to me…keto is not restrictive…it is just that I don’t cook at home like I should. now that I have been on keto for 4-5 years, at times when I find keto restrictive …I always look to replace the food I crave…varying degree of success…psychologically though replacing a food item is less restrictive than banning a food item altogether. Also When I get bored of my keto recipes…I look for new ones or’ketofy’ traditional recipes….I make a mean fried (cauliflower) rice!!! I enjoy sitting in on your chats❤ take good care, ladies!!

I learned not to tell people I lost weight on keto. I tell them that most days I eat Whole Foods, including lots of veggies, meats, eggs and dairy; I eat very little processed foods, and I exercise consistently. They think I am being so healthy. They don’t think that if I say keto but it’s the same thing! 😂

I’m getting more cynical as I get older and I think you’re probably right about those industries funding this and other articles like it. Think about it. How much money would those industries lose if more and more people were eating low carb? They can’t afford it so they have to convince people that ‘keto is dangerous’, and some other such nonsense.

In my experience many skeptics are really uneducated about the KETO diet. I use to be one that had unsubstantiated opinions. I lacked knowledge about the diet and I had been brainwashed into thinking fat was out and carbs were in. I no longer believe that lie. I now ask those skeptics what do they know about KETO lifestyle. I also ask if they ever tried the diet. It gives me the opportunity to clear up their misconceptions while helping them with their diet. I no longer feel offended but empowered to teach them

I love your realistic down to earth approach. I have been trying to do intermittent fasting and I am not having success with it. Would love to see a video on how you both did it, the whole process. Most of the videos I've seen by others discuss how many hours, 8/16, 12/12, etc. not talking how difficult it is to get on that schedule!!! Would love to hear how your experience with being successful with it. Thanks for reading, love your videos. :)

I fast 20 hours a day. My advice is always start with no snacks, then push your breakfast back one hour. So if you normally ate breakfast at 8 am, eat at 9 am. Then try to push it back another hour, so eat it at 10 am. If you do it super gradually, I mean even taking one month for each hour push, you will get to a place where your body expects you to go a really long time without eating and you just will not have hunger pains. If you're starving all day, you're not ready. Eat. I got some bad advice at the beginning of this year, my stomach was growling so loud all night I could not sleep - people told me just to ignore it. Wrong! I had to eat more at dinner so I was satiated. I would also love to hear the twins speak on fasting though - I'm sure they have great tips.

I agree with the gradually shrinking of your eating window. No evening snacks, and see how long you can go before eating in the morning. Enjoy coffee, seasoned bone broth, tea. Make sure your last meal is high fat and protein so you don't start your fast with high blood glucose. Make sure you're getting enough water and salt too.

I used to bake my own bread. I used to love bread. But after 5 years I have learned to live without regular bread. On occasion use a keto bread if I am craving a sandwich or bagel or biscuit, but as time moves forward, I eat them less and less. I save my splurges for holiday meals with family or vacation (and then it is not a full-on, free-for-all...I feel way too awful when I do that.) I too am "technically" keto. I never track anymore; I have learned what will work and what will not. Love your channel(s) ladies.

Hi ladies, love the new channel and discussion. I watch a myriad of people to gain knowledge and ideas; thank you for sharing yours. Do I restrict what I eat? You bet! I'm ketovore. I have learned what MY body needs (fat + protein), doesn't need (sugar, fiber aka too many vegetables, gluten), and enjoys immensely (steak, carnivore pancakes, bacon, 100% dark chocolate). My main goal was and still is - to avoid T2D. Challenging? You bet! Anything worth doing takes effort. If it was so easy to eat healthily we wouldn't have a T2D health epidemic in America. My friend who does keto with me has no issues with blood sugar/insulin resistance like I do, but still avoids carbs and all types of sweeteners and sweetened foods for different reasons and goals. It is called "bio-individuality". We are not the same and all of the health fields (and other people groups) need to stop pretending otherwise. I've learned to stop trying to convince others and that's not easy!! LOL.

Hi Ladies, You’re 100% right. All life has choices. You are the sum total of all your choices you have made in your life. That includes what to eat and drink. I have been eating Keto for 2 years and have lost 80 pounds. While I love the weight loss what I really love is how clear my brain is. I have mental energy that I lacked before keto. There is something you can replace the things you love so you don’t feel cheated of your most loved foods. Like if you miss bread there IS Keto friendly breads you can buy but you can also make bread in your microwave that is toastable. I highly recommend Keto Twins both channels. They are awesome, funny, and real. Watch all their videos. Love you ladies! I’m 66 years old and I love my life. Keto requires choices but isn’t hard once you start. (Plus I can’t eat gluten and still find it easy to follow).

I have been on a Keto diet for 2 years this October and I have never tracked any macros, I just found out what is a low carb food and made my eating up of these foods. I suffer from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and do not have the energy to track food, if I tried to do this tracking, I believe it would be the difference of me not following this diet or any diet, it’s just too hard for me. I monitor my weight each morning and use this as a balance to what I possibly ate yesterday. I have slowly lost 20kgs over this time period and see me following this Keto way of life for the rest of my life, I am now 61yrs. I don’t think I need to lose anymore weight as now 63kgs and 5 foot 5 inches tall, but will monitor my weight because I love my food and would put on lots of weight in a very short time, so monitoring my weight daily will help me stay this weight. I also feel so much better on this diet as I am intolerant to sugar, which upsets how I feel.

I definitely get what you are saying about addiction. I don't think I'm capable at this point of just eating one rice crispy treat. I want to eat the whole pan. So it's best for me to just accept the fact that sugar and starch are not for me.

The thing is, I lost weight on calorie restriction. It was more restrictive, and despite 2 years of struggling to keep it off, I gained all 60 pounds back, and then 20 more in another 2 years. So rough. I'm definitely a carb addict. You wouldn't say to an alcoholic, oh it's your birthday, one drink won't hurt! That's too restrictive! You can't maintain that for life! Like yeah, you can if you HAVE to. And for me, if I eat carbs, I get fat. Period. No carbs, I lose weight. A pretty easy equation to me. I'll definitely be keto for life.

Well said!!! If you ask fat people, "why do you think you're fat?" If they were truly honest, they would name all the carbs they eat. Carbs and sugar. That's what makes people fat. I don't get why people are unwilling to admit it.

Love your approach ladies, i joined a facebook group when i first started keto (18 mo ago) and i should have realised it was strict as part of the group rules included ‘ You must not refer to the Admins as Keto Police’ 😂😂 of course thats exactly what they were. People like that give the lifestyle a bad name. At the start it can be a struggle, because you have to rethink everything you’ve ever been told, and it seems counter intuitive, and we have been told all our lives to eat lots of healthy carbs and menus are based around the carbs. But honestly once you get into the swing of Keto it is not a difficult way of eating. You know what you can eat and its easy to cut out ( unless you are eating lots of ultraprocessed) what you shouldn’t. To me calorie counting or diets based on calorie restriction (WW/SW) are way more complicated and require lots of calculation and tracking as an ongoing thing…. plus they are impossible to maintain, because the weight will always creep back on.

My son’s wedding. I got roped into helping prep food. Which was fine. The father of the bride insisted I take a bite of cantaloupe. I finally did. No I didn’t beat myself up over that. But my bigger question is ok they are vegan. We mustn’t upset that apple cart. But what about anyone else? The entire reception was pasta vegetables and fruit with bread. No I did not eat it. But why?

I was strict keto for a year, counting carbs and macros. As I added foods and tweaked my recipes and checked my ketones when I made major changes I learned what knocks me out of ketosis and what doesn't. I guess I am technically keto these days though I just say very low carb, typical days are 20-50 carbs, but some days I will carbup to 100 or so carbs. When I go to business events Keto meals are not an option so I will just choose the best options available, last week I had this to die for smores mouse cake shot that was had real graham cracker and marshmallow. I did not feel guilty and other than getting a little puffy, by morning I was in even higher ketosis that I usually am. If you treat eating like a diet you are destined to fail, when you make it a lifestyle it is something more achievable and something you look forward to doing.

The best "diet" is one that is sustainable FOR YOU. We are all different, our bodies are all going to respond differently. At the end of the day it comes down to understanding how YOU respond to a "keto diet" and using common sense. I think you two young ladies are doing it perfectly. I do my "keto" in a similar way...I hop off and on the "keto train" but do keep my carb intake low (for the most part) when I am "off the train". One thing that I have eliminated 99% is sugar and fast food...down 35 lbs in 3-1/2 month (mid May to Labor Day). I intentionally took the entire month of September "off the train" just to see how my body would respond to no exercise (typically walk 5 miles per day) and a "reasonable" low carb diet and keeping my caloric intake at what should be "break even". Happy to say that I pretty much maintained my weight the last 30 days, so I feel like I have myself "dialed in"...Now going to go in my second leg of IF/caloric restriction/keto/low carb/walking until I drop another 25lbs which will put me at my goal weight. I get there when I get there, I plan to jump off the train a few times along the way!
