Extreme Bat Birth caught on camera - bungee-jumping baby!

We are excited to announce the births of another two critically endangered bat pups at the Zoo on Mother's Day!
Imagine, giving birth to a baby whilst hanging by your thumbs and the baby hangs by the umbilical cord... 🙃🤔
On Mother's Day, we were treated to the birth of a critically endangered bat pup here at the Zoo and the whole birthing process has been caught on camera.
Livingstone's Fruit Bats are the 3rd largest bat in the world and there are less than 1,200 in the wild and only around 100 in captivity. This is a huge success for the captive breeding programme.

Last July, a group of pupils from Richard Coates Primary School, Ponteland, , visited |Northumberland Zoo. We passed by the Bat Area and are so pleased to hear that now we have a Bat Pup to welcome!

That's an unusual birthing technique. Most Flying-Foxes remain hanging head down and catch the pup in their wings.

Our second female gave birth the same way and Jersey Zoo have also reported this type of bat birth for this species - crazy right! Amazing though.

Webbed extremities, bats share the same forearm bones having all evolved from a common ancestor. The human arm and the bat forearm bones are the same and include the humerus, ulna, radius, carpals, metacarpals, and phalanges. Bats are the only mammal that can fly, evolving to escape numerous predators including snakes. Bats cannot fly off the ground, they must drop into flight, or drop into flight, a bat on the ground may not be sick, although should not be touched, however, may be protected from cats, dogs, and other predators putting box over the bat until a rescue can come and collect the bat. It is always a great idea to have the name or names and numbers of wildlife rescues and sanctuaries in the area where you live.
