I spent the entire video trying to figure out how they expect someone to get that 400 pound tire off the roof rack. The cab doesn't tip forward that much, and any winching down would likely smash a window.

3BoOoDTV you don't do insane rock crawling with a vehicle like this... + it just looks like it has a high balance point but in fact the chassis is still heavy enough. If you ever driven a big tractor on fields with big rises you would be surprised in fact what they are capable of... they always look like they fall over especially with a big trailer and a lot of hay bale but they won't flip that fast. Same here.

The whole point of an overland vehicle is to have a good livable space inside. Not just climbing some inclines. If you look for Unicat (for example), and specially the newer ones, you'll see endless interior pics. I'm not asking for a documentary, only to see a real finished product and an overview of the interior. Those trucks are not finished.

I have a question though: What would happen if there were any "electrical failure", how the transition would change speed? Second question (the last one): Those exists a alternative manual transmission...? Why those question: If you are in the wild and it happen there there is no electricity system while you are driving (diesel does need one but...) the "electronic devise" for the "automatic transmission" should need an alternative in any case...

+Alex K I would imagine they're designed with low-line or even fared-in roof furniture to prevent that. If, as they said, all that is fitted on the outside of the roof are the solar panels there shouldn't be much up there for trees and the like to get hung up on to do damage. If you try to drive it under a low bridge without paying attention to the height clearance signs then you're an idiot and you deserve the big bill to repair the damage anyway...
@gosportjamie
@gosportjamie 8 жыл бұрын
+cbf 24 You'd be surprised how stable this type of military truck is. One of the design requirements of them is that they be able to drive over rough terrain at a certain speed, often 50 kmh, so the suspension has to be extremely tough and flexible and the vehicle extremely stable to do that. Of course when you're taking one of these off-road you do need to be mindful that the centre of gravity is higher than in a conventional four wheel drive vehicle and so modify the way you approach certain obstacles such as traversing a side slope but with that in mind and with practice to master the techniques you would probably find that one of these will go anywhere that a conventional road-legal four wheel drive vehicle will and probably further than quite a few will. Of course, if you try to take it places that you otherwise would only try to take a rock crawler or an off-road buggy you might get into trouble, though the large tyres and portal axles will probably make it quite capable over anything but large rocks...
@gosportjamie
@gosportjamie 8 жыл бұрын
***** 30 degrees transverse is one hell of a side slope. As the camper body is made of aluminium to keep the weight and the centre of gravity down it probably won't reduce that by a whole lot. Thank you for clarifying that, I should have changed my comment after watching the video over and realizing that they weren't portal axles but somehow it slipped my mind. You're right about the Tatras, they really are the puppies privates when it comes to off-road trucks, they are proper beasts. I think the Unimog still uses portal axles, something that was always it's trademark, though new Unimogs are pretty few and far between as they are pricey and they have long working lives, there are still plenty of ones from the '60s plying their trade in places where poor ground conditions are the norm rather than the exception. I didn't realize the Steyr Puch Pinzgauer was an obsolete model now, the UK military is still putting new ones into service, I suppose they must have stockpiled them while they were still in production. I can't help thinking that they must be incredibly capable vehicles off road, I have driven a Haflinger, it's much smaller cousin, and that was hugely more capable than it's small size and tiddly engine would make anyone think. It was also a huge amount of wet, cold and dirty fun too...

@KurNorock
@KurNorock 6 жыл бұрын
Where are you supposed to go "overlanding" in that thing? I guess if all you want to do is go across wide open deserts with tons of highway driving, you are set. But if you want to go on actual trails, you'll be unable to get under tree branches, rock overhangs, and you will be banging your shell into rock walls in off camber situations. They thought of everything except making it usable as an overlander.

I like the thought of re-purposing military vehicles, but this one had a ridiculous roll-over angle. I think you could get it to 23 degrees on angle before it would roll, now these knuckle heads put this big ass box on the back of it, brilliant. They got rid of the hydraulic cab tilt, which sucks because the alternative is using a bottle jack type lift, takes a while to do. Baldy's tongue click is annoying as hell, not necessary at all.

@HarryWillock
@HarryWillock 8 жыл бұрын
Some can go over $1,000,000 or you could pick up a Tiger for under $200,000 then there is everything in between. This one looks great and $300.000 would be reasonable, for what you get. The only downside to this one is, it is very tall and not too practical for overgrown logging trails with lots of bushes and trees hanging over. On another note, I would like to see you guys do a side by side 4x4 show down of the different chasis, in this segment. Ford F550, Dodge, Fuso, M2, Unimog etc... just to see how they all hold up on a steep and rocky old Forestry trail. Cheers and thanks
