I feel bad for Col. Pavlovic. He took the risk so the pilots under his command wouldn’t be needlessly killed. That is true leadership from the front. We were his adversary but I personally have nothing but respect for this brave man. RIP Colonel Pavlovic. The Yugoslav Air Force was lucky to have a man like you.

Fhis man, Milenko Pavlovic... he was clearly a very brave and at least on this occasion an honorable man. *facing the American F16s, which to be fair at the time of the engagement, were arguably the tightest turning aircraft in the skies, really was certain death.* Deciding to step up and protect his subordinates may not be the most appropriate thing as an officer, (officers are conditioned at officer training to understand that losing men under your command is part of warfare. And, as an officer, he may have failed in this respect), yet I have little regard for those who could waste lives on an operation that clearly is not necessary, or even smart strategically. *I have not heard of this man, and as an American I say RESPECT to you Pavlovic, you were a true hero.* "...no greater love hath a man than to lay down his own life for his friends." Thanks for sharing this interesting story, the young men today could learn from his actions, and from the futility of a War that should NEVER have happened. *Peace... it always a good day to give it another chance!* Hvala Lepo 😎🇺🇸 (heeeey, happy New Year, brother!)

He was a commander of the fighter unit flying Mig29s. There were rumors that he was under great preassure to get some air kills with his units. 3 Mig29s were lost on the first night, 2 more a few days later. NATO outranged the A-A weapons Migs ad by far and none of the shot down Migs fired a missile before being shot down. On this day he literally pulled much younger and inexperienced pilot out of the cockpit of a plane on alert with (paraphrading) : "You stupid kid, you are not ketting killed, its my task". The misdion itself was to try to catch up leaving strike package and try to score a kill from behind using radar guided R-27R missile with 20-30km range. He was spoted by an AWACS and 4 F16s covering the package were vectored to intercept. He was killed over his home town, with 2 AMRAAMs scoring hits. Slava mu!

Lt.Col Milenko Pavlovic sacrificed himself to protect younger pilots..And to add that most of Serbian MiGs were in poor condition since the country was held under UN economic sanctions from 1992 to 1996. There was also a concept to use MiG 29 and to go on a kamikaze mission to bring down Boeing E 3 Sentry, also known as AWACS.

The Squadron badge denotes it as II (AC) Squadron (AC = Army Cooperation) (I was on the Squadron at Laarbruch + Gulf War 1). They were Tactical Reconnaissance aircraft, carrying a Downwards Looking IR Camera and two SLIRs (Sideways Looking Infra Red) in place of the Guns. The freed up Ammo storage space contained hi-speed video recorder for each camera. They would not have been used as part of an attack package, however, they may have been sent in afterwards for damage assessment.

There was no chance for Serbia to support their Air Force due to sanctions. Just saying it now 3:31. US even wanted to sanction Switzerland. Switzerland was forced to change its constitution. And now our Air Force bought Patriot, useless-Pac-uselessNumber. At least only 70 missils of useless variant. That shows how much they rate the system.

There is Serbian song that is describing this situation, some of lyrics are: "NATO SQUADRON ABOVE VALJEVO, 4. MAY NINETY-NINE, ME IN THE PLANE 16 ON 1, I DEFEND MY PEOPLE AND I MUST NOT SURRENDER! I HEAR NOTHING IS RIGHT, RENADES ARE FLYING ATTACKING US AGAIN FROM THE SKY, ME IN THE PLANE 16 ON 1, LONG LIVE SERBIA I WILL NOT SURRENDER! They're ready to target that factory, destroy the city, they say they also have tactics. Damn them, the children will not die!!! I get on the plane and start the machine. The radar has failed and the sky is on fire, run away cowards you are not welcome here I will give my life, let it hurt me! I'm going after them, I'm not afraid of anything. I attack bravely, I will try to break them, there are so many I almost can't count them..... So they run away even if there are 16 of them, and I have them, but they also have me......" On the english it dosent sound that good, but point is important Link of the song: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y4GpmKaAq6uNiLs

Impressive story, do you know why Milenko Pavlovic didn't try to climb higher to have a better energy state ? In the vid I see that the Mig29 is at quite a low altitude, which is good for defending missles but not good for launching them. Do you think he knew he wouldn't get to launch a missle anyway and decided to give himself the best chance at survival (even though he thought he'd die) ?
@sash91216
@sash91216 2 жыл бұрын
I guess he tried to get as close to them as possible, given that he was in a technologically very inferior and defective aircraft, so it was impossible to hit them from a greater distance, and in a dogfight he might as well do something

Like these other views, I also suppose he was trying to stay low to avoid detection or at least to delay it long enough to get a chance to launch a missile. But it seems that an AWACS spotted him very early.

Thanks! A Dutch pilot, Colonel Peter Tankink was credited with a MiG-29 kill in the beginning of the war, that is not related to this story. While it is impressive, unless you have an urgent need to get up and into the air, you do not take off using afterburners when taking off from a long runway. If you are just taking off on a more or less routine patrol you do not use them as they burn a lot of fuel that you could otherwise use to extend the mission duration.
