Fhis man, Milenko Pavlovic... he was clearly a very brave and at least on this occasion an honorable man. *facing the American F16s, which to be fair at the time of the engagement, were arguably the tightest turning aircraft in the skies, really was certain death.* Deciding to step up and protect his subordinates may not be the most appropriate thing as an officer, (officers are conditioned at officer training to understand that losing men under your command is part of warfare. And, as an officer, he may have failed in this respect), yet I have little regard for those who could waste lives on an operation that clearly is not necessary, or even smart strategically. *I have not heard of this man, and as an American I say RESPECT to you Pavlovic, you were a true hero.* "...no greater love hath a man than to lay down his own life for his friends." Thanks for sharing this interesting story, the young men today could learn from his actions, and from the futility of a War that should NEVER have happened. *Peace... it always a good day to give it another chance!* Hvala Lepo 😎🇺🇸 (heeeey, happy New Year, brother!)

He was a commander of the fighter unit flying Mig29s. There were rumors that he was under great preassure to get some air kills with his units. 3 Mig29s were lost on the first night, 2 more a few days later. NATO outranged the A-A weapons Migs ad by far and none of the shot down Migs fired a missile before being shot down. On this day he literally pulled much younger and inexperienced pilot out of the cockpit of a plane on alert with (paraphrading) : "You stupid kid, you are not ketting killed, its my task". The misdion itself was to try to catch up leaving strike package and try to score a kill from behind using radar guided R-27R missile with 20-30km range. He was spoted by an AWACS and 4 F16s covering the package were vectored to intercept. He was killed over his home town, with 2 AMRAAMs scoring hits. Slava mu!

The Squadron badge denotes it as II (AC) Squadron (AC = Army Cooperation) (I was on the Squadron at Laarbruch + Gulf War 1).

Impressive, as always. I remember reading about a Dutch pilot shooting down a MiG during this campaign. Was that a separate incident, or was it - as noted in the video - an erroneous report that actually refer to this particular aerial fight?
@showtime1122 жыл бұрын
Thanks! A Dutch pilot, Colonel Peter Tankink was credited with a MiG-29 kill in the beginning of the war, that is not related to this story. However, the Serbian pilot who was hit that time claims that it was a Serbian surface-to-air missile that shot him down by mistake. He supposedly had a ground radar warning just before he was hit.

While it is impressive, unless you have an urgent need to get up and into the air, you do not take off using afterburners when taking off from a long runway. If you are just taking off on a more or less routine patrol you do not use them as they burn a lot of fuel that you could otherwise use to extend the mission duration.

Just a part? Don't be silly, Yeah, the country officially called itself 'Federal Republic of Yugoslavia' at the time but this was nothing but Serbia with a little appendix called Montenegro that had no say in anything. Serbia called all the shots. Reasons for the name were, of course political. They tried to pass themselves as the only successor to the former six-republic federation and justify their use of force trying to prevent the breakup. So, yeah. Effectively this was Serbia.
