My thought is that Fabiano in 2018's form would have beaten anybody on the Earth in a Championship Match, but he unluckily had to play against non other than peak-form Magnus. And everything was decided in the rapid portion. Very unlucky. Best wishes to him!

Magnus wasn't anywhere close to his peak form in 2018, he was going through a slump. He had gone from his peak of 2882 to 2835 and there was only 3 points gap between him and Fabi (2832) before the start of their World Championship match. That's the closest anyone has come to dethroning Magnus from no. 1 position, if Fabi won any Classical game against Magnus he'd have been no. 1 in rating. But Magnus survived and won the Championship in rapid tiebreaks.

Do not forget that elo depends on the elo of the opponents one faces, so it does not mean that the form at 2835 is worse than that at 2850.

Even if he wins the Candidates and beats Ding, we all know who the "No. 1 Chess Player In The World" is. Strong asterisk attached to Ding's and whoever wins this year's championships. That said, the Candidates look very exciting this year, and whoever wins has a very real chance of becoming world champion if Ding continues the streak he's been on.

@@lollycopter As long as Magnus plays a decent number of classic games a year, and has a decent edge as #1 in classical, I think there will be some justification in arguing he would be WCC if he wanted to (especially last tournament as I can't see him losing to Ian or Ding in their last WCC form). Whether that's enough to 'attach an asterisk' to the current WCC is on the individual considering it. That said in a hypothetical world where Magnus had declined to defend his title after the very close match vs Fabi, and Fabi won the next WCC (2020), it would be very hard to not consider Fabi a true WCC. Which kinda brings into question how fair the assumption is that the WCC when Magnus declines to defend is not a rightful WCC. How much rating gap justifies this argument? And by the same logic if someone wins WCC while rated third best, is that player 'WCC with asterisk' not just because of Magnus, but because they don't deserve WCC when there's someone else #2 in ratings? Right now the gap between Magnus (#1) and Fabi (#2) is close to identical to the gap between Fabi (#2) and Hikaru (#3). If ratings stayed similar and someone other than Fabi won, are they 'with asterisk' because of both Magnus, but also because of Fabi? This aspect makes the rating argument a lot more nebulous, and frankly weaker to me. But admittedly I'm a Magnus fan, so while he has a significant lead as #1, there'll be part of me that assumes he would be WCC if he wanted. The other tricky part is that the WCC is quite stacked in the current holder's place. Magnus complained about this during his reign, but especially before it. Paraphrasing, he described it like a '(Soccer) World Cup where the last winner qualifies directly for the next World Cup's final'. There's obviously some differences here because roster can change a lot, but the general idea is the same. Candidates can have very unpredictable results. It's not guaranteed that the highest ranked player in candidates will win the tournament, even if that gap is decently large. Ding's path to WCC (ignoring the unique circumstance of #2 in candidates mattering) in some ways shows the randomness inherent in the Candidates process. And his seat in finals, when it seems rather unlikely that in his form he would be top 2 this candidates, is a good example of how the title defender has quite high privilege. If we take WRC or WBC where Carlsen has won the majority of the last 10 years in each, a lot of those wins have been super marginal. And by no means has he won every single one (but he might have had he been auto qualifying for a final's spot and defending the title against a single opponent each time). All this leads me to believe that if Carlsen's rating gap becomes small over #2 in classical, it would be rather unreasonable to keep an asterisk to WCC name even if the #2 rating player is not the one sitting in the WCC seat. Sorry to ramble, it's an interesting question. I'm hoping Fabi gets his shot this year (it's a little sad for Ian, but it is what it is).

That is not a fair comparison. He is not nearly as paranoid as Kramnik, and he knows far more about online chess than Kramnik. Yes, he's maybe more pessimistic about cheating than Hikaru and Danya, but most people are, and that's understandable, given how easy it is to cheat sparringly in Titled Tuesday, possibly get away with it, combined with the financial incentive of prize online tournaments.
