It’s one of those times where you kind of hope BIL can flee to a country that has no extradition laws or is too broke to pursue. I normally have great sympathy for older parents saddled with paying for and having to bring up a grandchild but in this case I can’t work up much empathy. I used to have the “3 cries rule” for sobbing over trivialities or entitlement, as in first tears I’ll be sympathetic, second I’ll tolerate it, third they are shown the door. You’d be surprised how many of my former lady friends only ever cried twice !! I guess it’s called strategic crying and when you explain to young ladies this, some even smile as in they know you know they know you know, etc. I guess potential BIL was a lot more patient than me but even his patience had limits.

This story always reminds me of another bridal story where the bride finds out that her "loving" parents want her to give up her wedding plans and let her sister have not only the venue and deposit, but the food and bar deposit, and her wedding dress. The bride's sister and mother had already gone with the bride to help her pick out a suitable dress (meaning one that the sister liked).. The bride found out by accident that her sister intended to high jack arrangements. With the parents help the bride would be informed of her sister's need to use the wedding plans at a family gathering the next week. Fortunately the bride was marrying into a really marvelous family. The groom's parents insisted that they be allowed to host the wedding at their place. They loved the thought of having a garden wedding, or using the ballroom if it rained. That took care of the venue, food, and wine, so she contacted the venue to cancel the room, food and bar. The owner was happy to have the cancellation as his sister was was getting married on the same day, and wanted to use the room. I think he was dreading his sister's reaction to being told the space was already book. He gave the bride a full refund. Next the bride contacted the bridal shop about the dress and found the owner very helpful. She was more than willing to apply the deposited that the bride had put down on 3 dresses, a wedding dress, MOH dress and a MOTB dress. She then applied the money towards another simpler dress that the bride had tried on, had fit her perfectly and loved. However her sister hadn't liked it. The bride was left owing only a bit more for the dress of her choice so she took it home that day. She figured that her sister and her mother wouldn't becoming to her wedding so the didn't need the dresses they'd wanted so badly. At the family gathering the announcement of the beloved daughter's pregnancy was made and the attempted usurping of the date, place, and wedding garments was proposed to a very confused looking bride and groom. The family was stunned to be told that all those plans had been cancelled or change. Sorry, Sis, you can't get your wish this time. And certainly not on my dime.

@@D-Dollie I'd love to give you the entire story, but this was a college friend's wedding that she told me the gory details on. This was way before computers were household items. We did have a fun time at the wedding, which ended up being held under large canopies in the back yard. Later on during the day the groom and his brothers took the younger guests upstairs to the ballroom for summer sledding which consisted of someone sitting on a long piece of cloth with the guys pulling them around the room, while singing "Dashing through the snow in a one horse open sleigh." I mentioned the change of the bride's wedding dress. The dress she wanted and finally got was a simple white short dress with a bit of colored floral patterning on the bodice and fluttery short sleeve. Perfect for a garden wedding and for summer sledding. She looked so happy. Her folks weren't there, nor was her sis, but nobody cared, as the people who cared about her were in attendance.

After the ceremony and buffet lunch we of the younger set kicked off our heels, ditched coats and ties and had a real romp in the garden, the basketball court, and someone ended up falling into the pool. All of us from college age down ended up in the ballroom sliding on sacks until the "grown ups" showed up and showed us how the older set did it. The mother of the groom was one of the best, but since it was her house I expect she'd had a lot of practice.

But the majority of these entitled pregnant women are just, well, entitled. Women all over the world work till the day they deliver. Can’t become a princess simply because they are pregnant. I had a situation almost exactly like this happen to me except the entitled person was my mother herself. Not my wedding but the moment me and my husband got our first house we also found out I was pregnant with our first baby and my mom went psycho. She would force her views from how our house should be decorated all the way to how the baby should be raised. Now my mom is a hoarder so she was throwing things in our house left and right and at first we took a few things to appease her but she wouldn’t stop gifting us stuff and some of the stuff she gave us was really old or broken. We politely told her we didn’t want her things and that we wanted to decorate ourselves but that answer wasn’t good enough and she wouldn’t take no for an answer so I had to get aggressive and tell her no and that we are not taking anymore things from her. It got so bad that we fought with her over the phone almost every night because we wouldn’t bend to her whim I couldn’t even enjoy my pregnancy and didn’t even have a baby shower because I didn’t want her to come. I still resent her for that. when I was in labor my husband was fighting with my mom through texting. I didn’t learn this till after the fact but my husband had to turn his phone off or he would have missed the birth. We tried to make up after my baby was born but there was always a sense of tension and resentment. Once my mom met my baby shit hit the fan again and she tried her damndest to tell us how she should be raised and what she should be taught which FYI wouldn’t work because my husband and I have different values and beliefs including politically. I could go on and on but long story short the only way to have peace was to cut her and my family out of my life because once we cut her out she played the victim card and turned everyone else against us. The only one who talks to me now is my brother but it’s very seldom and it’s obvious he takes her side because she’s mom. It’s sad we had to cut them out but if I have to cut them out of our lives for my daughter to have a better brighter view on life and future than so be it.

Honestly, this is probably the best outcome for this older story. Something else to consider; even if the sister wasn't pregnant (or pretending to be, who knows?) or have a guy, what were the chances that she was going to try to make OP's wedding about her as well? Can you imagine what she'd have done to the wedding cake since not even a graduation cake was sacred? This makes sense, the whole my bil will tell his story when he's ready. Maybe she faked a pregnancy to get the spotlight because sisters wedding was soon and figured she could either get pregnant in the interim or fake a loss ( so disgusting, but some people will do anything for attention ). Maybe the announcement of her wedding wasn't met with the fanfare the sister wanted, so she'll hulk smash the wedding away from op so she's in the spotlight. If sister got her way she would probably have the dream wedding and if she wasn't pregnant announce she is at op's wedding.

If pregnant crazy sis was that desperate for a wedding, I would have planned one for her for free. I'm not a professional or anything 😂 but I'm good at organising events. I mean, it's who she's marrying and not where that counts? It annoys me how that logic only applies to OP and not the spoiled brat of a sister. Got to laugh at the parents, they did a terrible parenting job of the sister and then ended up having to deal with her under their roof. Karma... The Nan issue, I think is a generational thing, rather than a spiteful thing. Depending on her age and upbringing she may be worried about the spoilt sister's reputation, because of her pregnancy before marriage However, I think she is of a generation where the nicer sister's wedding would have been paid for entirely by the bride's parents and therefore the brides could have been easily swapped out by the parents or even shared the event.

The parents missed their opportunity to see their good daughter get married and are now suffering the consequences for spoiling her all those years. The fiancé knew that being married to her would be hell and he got out before it could happen. Those receipts that OP provide was EPIC and all they can do is cry and try to intimidate and manipulate OP into submission. Not gonna happen. I knew she sis would try something on her wedding day but I loved how MOH handled her and protect OP like she was the secret service. Story 1- NTA as my English teacher used to say proper planning prevent piss poor performance and as Reddit likes to say, lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on mine. Sister should have booked the venue herself, found another venue and planned, or wait until after the baby is born to have more time to properly plan things.

I've heard this story so many times, but the one question that's never been answered is "did anyone (sister, parents, BIL) offer to pay OP for the expenses of the wedding they expected her to turn over?" A venue that's booked 3 years in advance is likely not cheap, plus all the additional expenses associated with a wedding, and the family just expected...what exactly? For OP to turn over her entire wedding, as well as absorb the cost, and just have some slap dash small ceremony months later, while her sister got OP's dream wedding on her dime? Who TF thinks that's reasonable?

If you are organized enough to book something 3 years in advance, it sounds like you're a very good planner. If you are getting married in a hurry because you're pregnant, and feel the need to borrow somebody else's wedding, it sounds like planning is not your strong point. And letting somebody else solve your problems is a habit you should break before that kid comes. Unless you want the kid to grow up expecting you (or more likely, their grandparents) to solve their problems.

Ok, nobody is mentioning it, so I'll do: Op's graduation. So long story short: Op graduated and her class had a ceremony. Her (then Bf) made her a cake and her sister smashed it because she's a freaking baby. She couldn't join some Ph.D. program or something, and her parents wanted Op to say a few words about the sister, which OP didn´t do and her sister decided that if she wasn't going to be the star might as well be the rain in Op's parade. Her sister is just horrible. I'm glad OP got that restraining order and that BIL dodged that bullet.

I love the part where she meets with her parents before the wedding and had the perfect responses to all of their nonsense. Well, to be fair, the dad is right. What's important is who you are marrying, not the venue. So, that means the sister can get married anywhere. They can even get married at the courthouse because, the venue doesn't matter. It's not OP's fault she got knocked up. So, it their fault they had to move the wedding up. Actions have consequences.
