In regards to the women in paintings with the "receding hairline", especially the portrait of Queen Elizabeth I, or Queen Gloriana whichever you prefer, the reason for the inclusion of those details has a far more somber and bleak origin. The actual reason that so many portrayals of moderately wealthy women of the time included a receding hairline was actually due to their makeup or various beauty enhancing products. At the time of these paintings, namely the 1500's and 1600's, one of the more common ingredients in makeup was mercury, and what's worse is that many makeup removers contained lead. So progressively, as a women went throughout her life, the harmful agents in her beauty products would cause damage to her face and scalp, resulting in things like blemishes, dead skin, a loss of hair, and even scarring from dying tissue in the worst cases. This resulted in a lot of women of noble birth to wear progressively ostentatious wigs to compensate for the loss of natural hair they had suffered, which results in the lack of hair present in many paintings. Perhaps the real tragedy of the ordeal was that those effected were in the dark as to the cause of their ailments, so as a countermeasure they would simply apply progressively more makeup to cover up their ever-expanding cosmetic-related injuries. This would of course further compound the problem, resulting in poisonings from the harmful chemicals. It's an incredibly saddening fact of life back then, but at the very least these elements of cosmetics were removed eventually. Sorry if this was a bummer, but I saw it in the video and wanted to say something.

As someone who studies historical fashion, I'll answer your questions historian Theory 1: they had big dresses to show off how much money they had. The bigger the dress the richer you are cause the cost of fabric was high Theory 2: women did pluck their hair to have bigger foreheads, but it was just a fashion statement and I don't think it was connected to fertility(I don't know about historical hairstyles so I could be wrong but that's what I remember learning) Someone asked about the neck riffs so I'll add this: it was at first lace to decorate your shirt or bodice, but then became a sign of wealth and became a separate garment. Lace was all hand made so the fancier the lace you had on you ruff the richer you were. (If you wonder where most fashion items come from, it's usually a sign of wealth)

The crazy thing about the neck rings is that they don't stretch your neck out, they weigh down your shoulders and compress your entire ribcage down XD

No way I never knew that. My back aches just thinking about it
@Kevin-jb2pv3 жыл бұрын
@@TrufflesandMayonaise It's true XD. Think about it, your spine is made of hard, unstretchable bone, but your rib cage is only supported vertically by your shoulder and neck muscles and somewhat by the connection between your rib bones and spine (which are flexible to facilitate breathing). Your bones can be deformed, sure, look at the ancient people who used to make babies' heads all elongated like Xenomorph Protoss monsters, but actually stretching out your neck vertebrae is probablematic since you aren't putting direct pressure on the individual bones to force them to grow around a restriction like with the head monsters and chinese foot binding and such.

As in, women are the issue they need to discuss. Either she just went tunnel vision when she heard "talk" and "more often" or actually thinks women are an issue. very odd
