Fast Forward in real life: the 1000HP McMurtry Spéirling Fan Car | Best of at Goodwood FOS 2022/2023

After last year's Festival of Speed, the McMurtry Spéirling has definitely made headlines around the world for its incredible record run up the Goodwood hillclimb course in 39.08 seconds, driven by former F1 driver Max Chilton. In 2023 McMurtry was again at the event as one of the entries in the Goodwood's 75th anniversary and 30 years of Festival of Speed celebrations batch, doing some extra demo runs.
So here's a compilation I put together using the footage recorded last year (matte livery and rear licence plate) and that of 2023 about this mini Batmobile, which, even in person, makes you feel like you're watching a sped-up movie.
The idea of this incredible prototype was born in 2016 when the startup McMurtry Automotive was registered by Sir David McMurtry. The motivation behind the Spéirling was to challenge the industry trend of increasingly heavier vehicles and create a lightweight electric drivers car. So a team of former Formula 1 engineers were tasked to design and build the ultimate high performance car from a ‘clean sheet’ design.
The result is a fully-electric, compact vehicle which is based on the fan-generated downforce concept which was first conceived by Jim Hall for the Chaparral 2J Can-Am and then repurposed by Gordon Murray in F1 and, later, in other of his creations. This concept allows the car to have downforce at all speeds as it does not rely on airflow over the car, unlike conventional vehicles.
The system in the McMurtry consists in two fans operated by an independent electric motor capable of turning them at the speeds selected by the driver. At their max rotation speed (23,000 rpm) the twin fans system provides 2,000 kg (4,400 lb) of downforce from standstill. This figure has been possible thanks to a great skirt design which perfectly seals the underbody of the car with the ground.
The Spéirling is moved by two electric motors placed inside a specially designed "e-axle", releasing the power only on the rear wheels. Being an under 1,000 kg vehicle and having a 1,000 bhp/tonne ratio plus the instant downforce, the McMurtry Spéirling is able to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 1.5 seconds. It has a track range of 25 minutes when running at GT4 race-car pace, and a road range of over 300 miles (when the road-legal Spéirling Pure will be sold to lucky owners)
In December 2022 in a video review by carwow, it claimed the record for the quickest accelerating road car using independent GPS timing with the following times:
0-60 mph in 1.40s
0-100 mph in 2.63s
0-145mph in 4.98s
¼ mile (400m) in 7.97s
What’s also interesting and tantalising at the same time, is that the car was sat on its 150mph limit for approx. 3 seconds during the ¼ mile run! The car tested was the Goodwood winning record car, in the same configuration as it crossed the finish line there, so a production car record cannot be claimed during this run.

It goes around corner faster than anythin, i would say. The acceleration on straight is insane too, even its only rear wheel drive. BUT within a quarter mile it runs into its speedlimiter, cause of the gearbox.

The craziest thing about this car, and others like it. Is that fan car technology, from what I understand was banned from F1 for good reasons. The main reason being that if the fan vacuum against the ground was to break seal in a corner. You are basically going to go flying off the track. So it is of course ALWAYS dangerous to drive any hyper car on a track like this. The driver and team with something like this, is actually pushing things just that much further. Both scary and impressive. Hats Off.
