I have 3 boys and a girl, all are adults now. I taught all of my children to cook. My philosophy - if you want to eat well, you need to cook well. My boys are all great cooks. My youngest and I share recipes often. The second youngest is the one who requests the old family recipes. My daughter…that’s another story. She hates to cook but can if she has to. That being said, her oldest son loves to bake! (I taught him too!)

Looks so good. Such a great helper, and a great way to learn to cook. When my grandsons were younger, we would do a lot of cooking of different things, I had them write the recipe down in their own writing and then they drew pictures of what it was. They kept their notebooks here and when they became adults I gave them to them and they still have them. They would get out their cookbooks when visiting and ask if can make whatever they were in the mood. They would get started cooking from their books. They learn from start up to clean up. The memories and stories created were priceless, Plus they have grama's recipes

I am so grateful for your research. I bake/cook almost everything we eat. I've allowed hubby to continue to eat unhealthy snacks because he's reduced his consumption. Organic foods use safflower or other seed oils which are also extremely unhealthy. Seed oils increase inflammation and we are working to lower the inflammation in my body. The ability to have crackers again is wonderful. You are 100% correct in removing these commercial junk foods from your family's diet.

When I overheard that my brother was starting fractions the comming year I freaked. He was horrified at math. All summer I had him choose a recipe and double or halve it. He looked at the cup marks at the fractions. He got pretty fast at it. Of course it was doubling if it was a sweet. Lol. He understood the relationships between numbers after a couple weeks, it wasn't scary or anything. Then at school he was toward the top of math instead of last, when fractions started. It made school far more enjoyable that year. Later he cooked at restaurants, he said it was what he was already good at.

My son is now 48 but when he was young I working at a school bazaar and talking with the other moms about my son who had been diagnosed with hyperactivity. One of the moms told me about a book that I should read by Dr. Feingold about how cutting out artificial colors and flavors many kids recover with this diet. So our whole family started eating this way. I would drive into Michigan to purchase hot dogs and bologna because at that time they had stricter laws on meat and were ok for him to eat. I became room mother so I could bake and provide all the treats for parties that he too could eat. I would make homemade chocolate cupcakes and shoot cream into them with a horse syringe without the needle. Then dip the tops into homemade fudge and everyone loved them. This diet allowed him to concentrate and get through elementary school and junior high. He grew out of the problem after that. I could tell if he had eaten something he shouldn’t when he came in the door after school. It was usually a sucker or chocolate milk. He said when he ate something he shouldn’t he said it made his head hurt and made his heart pound fast. One thing could set him up for three days before it was out of his system. He knew that when he did this he would suffer but he was just a little boy and sometimes he would eat something that he knew he shouldn’t. The price was miserable so he didn’t do it often.

I love seeing you teaching your children skills that will help them in the future. My grand parents raised me so hey came from an older generation both born in the 1930s. My mom was big on teaching us skills. She always said “ I want to know if something happens to me my kids know how to take care of themselves.” So as soon as we were all enough to use the stove she taught us how to do the basics. As soon as we could reach the washer and dryer we had to wash and do our own laundry. If we were going to church camp or a rip anywhere we knew how to pack our own bags. She would go behind us and check to make sure we have enough of everything we needed. She said “If you’re old enough to go to over night camp for a week you are old enough to pack your bag. I did that with my oldest nieces as well because they were with us all the time when they were little. My nieces will say Hey do you remember when we did xyz. That is a great feeling to know i taught them something or helped them not be afraid to do something. Thank you for sharing your skills with us as well. I haven’t stared canning yet but im trying to research it that way im not as scared when i start doing it. My mom did it for a short time when i was younger but i was a that age where i didnt really care to learn and she wouldnt let us near the stove while she did that scared we would get burnt.
