Its a common misquote used about different guitar players. Started with hendrix on the dick cavett show being asked that. But they were really good friends, and Eddie did say "He’s a studio guy. He started out playing on so many people’s records that he could play any style you wanted. He just amazes me at what a chameleon he can beIt’s almost hard to tell who’s really him. I guess it’s probably all of them, everything he’s ever been exposed to is who he is. He’s kind of a player’s player, a musician’s musician. I’m more of a straightforward rock & roll guitarist, blessed to be in a kick-ass rock band,” @jorgsydekum3729

Little Wing is a ‘Test Piece’ to see if guitarist’s can both capture the spirit of the original while simultaneously making it their own. No one, not even SRV, played it better than Jimi. For a 2 min 30 sec piece of guitar music it’s the most insurmountable mountain to climb. Lukather does a fantastic job of breathing power and passion into this classic.
@collinjamesguitar4 ай бұрын
Not so hot take: SRV’s was way more powerful than Jimi’s. Jimi’s was Starry Night. Stevie’s was the Sistine Chapel
@hecanseeme82104 ай бұрын
Yeah I don’t get this veneration of Jimi. He was innovative and a great showman, but he wasn’t even the best player of his time. Anyone who has picked up the instrument should be able to tell that SRV could play circles around Jimi. Personally I think Jimmy Page could as well. But it’s an opinion, it doesn’t mean anything. Your Sistine Chappell quip was apt.

I like Lukather's version of Little Wing. His fingering also looks easier than the original. I agree Jimi's version is the best and SRV's version is excellent.

I love SRV and thought his version was superior when I was a child, then I played for many more years and learned to hear. "More notes" doesn't equal "better". Much of it was a wankfest that doesn't really play to the song. It's great and all, but not superior... just different. Much of what the original conveyed was lost in trying to prove how much wanking could be done, IMO.

Been said in other comments but honestly, unless one is really into music, they would casually say "wow, that old guy isn't half bad" not knowing that it's not hyperbole to say he's overall a top 10, or perhaps a top 5 guitarist. Sure, there are others that specialize in their genre, but when you can sit this guy down and say "give me this" and this can be anything, and he can play it at the highest level, that's just insane.

So much respect for Luke Stevekather ...Once, a lifetime ago Jeff invited Steve to help produce the project "who else!". Among some other talented musicians Jennifer Batten and Jan Hammer joint the fun..Unfortunately Jeff asked Steve to resign from the project because Jeff questioned Steves objectivity when it came to the melodies and other licks Jeff produced. He said that Steve was very enthusiastic and would have done anything to make the project a succes. Jeff was afraid that Steve would agree with every musical proposal he made and the record would be like having the vegetables but not the meat. This decision to let Steve go was very respectful discussed and Steve was compensated for his time spent. They remained friends ever since..

He should play Fender strats more often...I understand the appeal of EMG's but a strat with non-active pickups just sounds more amazing in his hands...
