What's hurting these movies is the lack of actual scripts. Not every actor can improv like RDJ and it really shows in The Marvels. The "fix it in post" mentality the studio has isn't helping either.
@wafflingmean44779 ай бұрын
Yeah the multiverse of madness script wasn't even finished when they started shooting. The writer was having to come up with stuff on the fly just so the actors would have something to do on set that day. It's obvious Disney thinks flashy lights and spamming CGI is all anyone enjoys about movies. Writing has always been the strongest pillar of any movie, so if the writing is completely ignored, the movie has NOTHING. Doesn't matter how much money you spend, no actor and no CGI artist can save a script that's bad, or a script that doesn't even exist.

You missed the most ridiculous part of the movie: The problem of the Kree sun dying was fixed when Prof. Marvel asks Cpt. Marvel "Have you tried using your powers to restart the sun?", and then Cpt. @@calebcold3 Dang I guess we forgot that Loki, Shang Chi, Hawkeye, WandaVision, FATWS, Moon Knight, and Wakanda Forever existed. All of them were critical and financial successes. Shang Chi came out in a time when movies theaters were shut down nearly worldwide due to the pandemic and it was released on D+ shortly after. Even doctor strange, despite me myself hating what they did to Wanda, nearly made a billion. The only reason it didn't was it being put on Disney plus less than 2 months following theatrical release If we take financial failures outside of the pandemic, when most theaters were doing terribly for obvious reasons, here are their list of 'failures' counting both revenue and critical reception *together:* -Eternals -She-Hulk -Quantumania -Secret Invasion -The Marvels 5 projects. Out of the 22 projects they have released starting in phase 4 and ending with Agatha, as that is the most recent release of phase 5. If you really want to throw Thor 4 in there despite it being a financial success, then fine - 6 projects. Still less than a quarter of the projects can be called failures. (In case you bring up Echo - the show got the second highest viewership on disney plus original releases this year, only beaten out by Percy Jackson. Pretty crazy since Percy Jackson was huge.) Marvel is far from being a shell of its former self. That's not to say that there hasn't been any decline at all, or improvements aren't needed, because they definitely are. It would be nice to focus on characters that feel relevant over new ones less people care about, and have endings of the projects actually have overarching consequences that aren't quickly resolved or still have yet to be addressed years later. But let's not try to claim that Marvel is doing terribly because it's had some bad ideas and made mistakes they absolutely still have time to bounce back from - Deapool and Wolverine proves that it isn't too late.

I think the primary problem Marvel has, which you touch on here, is the interconnectivity issue and how large and bloated that's become. The first 3 phases of the MCU were manageable. There were about 2 movies a year to see, and each film was, mostly, self contained but enhanced greatly if you saw other films. The Avengers is a solid film in its own right, but its amazing if you saw the Iron Man, Cap, and Thor films - etc. There wasn't other media a person needed to follow, just the couple films a year. Now, to follow the MCU story, you need to watch the couple films a year, and the Disney+ series, and the Disney+ mini-series. The Marvel's viewers would know all about Ms. Marvel... if they watched the show. They'd know about Prof. Marvel... if they watched the first Cap. Marvel movie and watched Wandavision... they'd know about the Skruls if they watched the Nick Fury show. Etc. etc. etc. There is just so much content, and so much of it is mediocre, that it just isn't worth it anymore (I stopped watching myself over a year ago).

Putting the characters in a "musical episode" (the one from Buffy the Vampire Slayer being the archetypal example) is a way to force them to express things (individually or between them) that they normally keep bottled up or otherwise conceal. People sometimes complain that Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers is too emotionless or generically snarky/confident all the time: great, now make her sing all the things she feels but doesn't talk about, e.g. she feels sad that her best friend died while she wasn't there, she feels she failed her honorary niece and doesn't know how to reconnect with her, she feels awkward around Kamala as another youngster who idolizes her, etc. Likewise, have Monica Rambeau sing about how angry she is at Carol, and have Kamala (who is a lot more emotionally expressive normally) help the other two express themselves, or express something she keeps hidden behind her exuberant fangirl persona (e.g. all this death and destruction freaking terrifies her). Bam. You have an instant excuse to race to/through some of the key emotional beats of the story. Or...not.
@mattdamutt56819 ай бұрын
Why does a musical planet even exist in an action superhero movie - let alone one that's supposed to be taken seriously? (Well, I assume it wanted people to take the movie seriously, maybe it didn't.) That sounds like a stunt that only Deadpool might succeed in pulling off. Might. At least with Buffy there's a much better context for why people unexpectedly broke out into song; demons casting weird curses was just a routine week for the gang.

At this stage in the game, Disney sitcom-level writing ultimately won't save the MCU. One thing I'll mention about most CGI Battles in the MCU (The huge ones with armies and whatnot) is that they honestly don't feel like battles at all. I know that this is nitpicking, but I feel like an army trying to conquer a planet should have more of a plan than just "Fly around and shoot lasers into stuff" The villain's motivation is that her planet's sun and atmosphere are dying... but she's previously introduced by showing her and her entire crew standing on a dark, barren moon with no atmosphere, wearing no protective gear or breathing apparatus, just moving around and chatting like they're in a coffee shop... the dark show was in the batman chip, someone I see The villain's motivation is that her planet's sun and atmosphere are dying... but she's previously introduced by showing her and her entire crew standing on a dark, barren moon with no atmosphere, wearing no protective gear or breathing apparatus, just moving around and chatting like they're in a coffee shop...I can't get over how unintimidating that antagonist looks At this stage in the game, Disney sitcom-level writing ultimately won't save the MCU. After Multiverse of Madness and Quantumania, it was revealed that they literally write the script as the movies are being filmed... And the focus is on making "memorable" scenes, as in: "Let's write this scene so that it may turn into a meme on the internet" It's both completely insane and completely expected. No wonder why recent movies end up like this. The solution is simple, really: Start with a FINISHED SCRIPT. "How does a civil war turn off a sun?" That is a very valid question! it is Thor was not coming back I am waiting for him taking so long on a chip on the video okay he was funny what is he doing to save her I was looking at Kane he did wrong I saw it happen in Galactus was in with fantastic-four did not asking thor in the movie from her new role I think the primary problem Marvel has, which you touch on here, is the interconnectivity issue and how large and bloated that's become. The first 3 phases of the MCU were manageable. There were about 2 movies a year to see, and each film was, mostly, self-contained but enhanced greatly if you saw other films. The Avengers is a solid film in its own right, but it's amazing if you saw the Iron Man, Cap, and Thor films - etc. There wasn't other media a person needed to follow, just a couple films a year. Now, to follow the MCU story, you need to watch a couple films a year, the Disney+ series, and the Disney+ mini-series. I like how he refers to the Hawkeye series as a movie: it doesn't bother anyone simply because of how painfully forgettable it is. Avengers: Infinity War made today - Thanos finds the Glove With the Stones, then has energy-beam duels with each of the superheroes while cracking jokes, until the plucky non-powered teenage girl who hangs along saves the day. lol at him calling Thor What's worse with the universe obsession is that even though I have (regrettably) seen the TV shows, I cannot remember half the reasons why certain things happen or who certain characters are since they were made a while ago compared to this movie.
@TheRealLiark7 ай бұрын
One thing I’ll say about She-Hulk is that it was self-contained. @RorikH9 ай бұрын
I've stopped caring about the MCU enough to watch the TV Shows, but I gotta say it's a bizarre decision to kill Maria Hill instead of Fury. (Not that Fury should've died on a TV Show instead of a movie.) Fury's usually cool, but Sam Jackson is both very expensive and 75 years old, so switching focus to a younger, cheaper actress seems like a more sound decision. (Also Maria Hill was director of S.H.I.E.L.D. in the comics for most of my childhood, so if someone accuses the decision of being woke you can just call them a fake fan.)

But they shouldn't be something that you need to watch to even make sense of the movies. Treat it like "Better Call Saul" and "Breaking Bad." You don't NEED to watch Breaking Bad to make sense of "Better Call Saul" You can enjoy "Better Call Saul" just fine on its own. But watching "Breaking Bad" adds incredible context and layers that will change your views on the show. And the same even applies to the other way around. That's how it should be. It shouldn't be MANDATORY to watch all of those shows just to make sense of the movies.

The bit with the singing planet feels like an episode of a tv show such as Star Trek, while in the Secret Invasion series it just felt like one long movie. Disney clearly thinks it has hit some sort of breakthrough in writing, where movies and television shows are identical and just need to be expanded or trimmed down to fit the timeslot, with no understanding whatsoever of basic pacing or attention spans.

@@v.v.9.9. That is a fair question. I got the statistic from the Beyond The Trailer KZbin Channel hosted by Grace Randolph. She's a well-respected film critic and has been doing her weekly Movie Math breakdowns for years. I don't know how the gender, ages, and ethnic background data is collected. Many tickets are purchased online, and people will have their genders, years of birth, and ethnicity on file. Perhaps that information is shared with box office data collectors. There are also weekly exit polls in the major markets, surveying people during their theater visits. Perhaps those samples offer an estimation for the national turnouts. There are also senior and child ticket prices, so age ranges are probably the easiest metrics to measure.

Nice touch to the Keeps promo. I didn't even want to skip ahead when other KZbinrs get to that part of thir videos.

That caviat towards keeps was brilliant and then you made the same mistakes as marvel. I love it.

These movies make me feel like a side character who was just going about their day and has no idea why the heroes are fighting some big evil sky beam monster or whatever emotional journey they went through before. These weird jumpsuit people just showed up and started making a mess >:/

You are right but do you realize you described the 3rd act of No Way Home? Sandman is trying to suffocate Parker....why?? Parker is literally his only hope of ever getting home, which is what he wants. The film violently ignores logic and character motivation over and over and over again to go to any lengths to make the silly cameos for Andrew and Maguire happen. Osborn throws a bomb into the middle of the street and blows up 1/2 a dozen cars. Tom Holland - does not care - and decides to betray Dr. Strange - *release Osborn* allow him to get back his glider and BOMBS - just in case he might need them lol, in order to kill Aunt May and allow the plot to keep happening. OMG. I didn't see this film so *maybe* it is worse????? Question does Iman V. get hit IN THE FACE with a bomb - then laugh it off, like Holland when he's hit in the face with Goblin's bomb????? Comic book film's can be more emotionally arrested and intellectually impaired than NO WAY HOME??? Really???

_Sandman is trying to suffocate Parker....why??_ Meanwhile Max (Electro) doesn't know and never met Parker but he's here anyway? Why? Film doesn't even bother to make an excuse - they just assume you're not paying attention and won't ask. Max wants to *stay here* cuz he liked the *new power* which is why he is fighting. But his new power is complete shit. He tries to electrocute Octavius an old man with no powers, and fails to even cinge him. (why? how? cuz none of the cartoon - i mean comic book characters can be hurt in this film - only Aunt May is harmed- she is fridged cuz girls have no place in this story accept as love interest and save me kill bait) Max should not be in the film. And once he is here the film has him try to fight Spiderman for a bullshit reason.

I know thread isn't about No Way Home - i'm just saying that many of you were fine with the bullshix writing and story telling as long as it was a fan service for Peter Parker.

Never had I suspected that Marvel would one day be called out for the major flaw of my other favorite series: Ace Attorney. You're right on the money, though.

What's the flaw?

@@nathaniellewis3835 Gimmicks. AA, for all its writing strength, often boils its characters down to simple and uninteresting stereotypes. Thankfully, most of its major characters grow far beyond their initial gimmicks.

@@nathaniellewis3835 Oh, it's the gimmicks. AA sometimes tends to boil down its characters to singular quirks or stereotypes that are meant to be their defining characteristics. Thankfully most of its characters grow far beyond their initial gimmicks.
