I am firmly agnostic, but watching you work on this building with such care and respect somehow makes me almost weepy. I imagine the convent feels like it's waking from a long slumber, cautiously stretching and realizing all its old hurts are being healed.

What a beautiful wood you have ended up with. Also I love what the "tea bath" did to the tiles.
@patrickadams6726 Жыл бұрын
The British undeniably quirky love of tea extends well beyond its use as a beverage. There must be a million and one uses for tea that we non Brits can’t even imagine. Staining accoustic tiles for the bench rest of a several centuries old salvaged cathedral organ in a deconsecrated nun’s hideaway is just ONE. Do any of you sturdy Englishmen out there have any other examples?
@janmorris1098 Жыл бұрын
Will the tea wash off if you should need to scrub the tiles.?
@annmcgranaghan2131 Жыл бұрын
@patrickadams6726 It can be used to "age" items such as linens, add to a garden as a fertilizer, put some tea bags in a bath , very relaxing. Add some tea bags to the toilet bowl let it steep, remove and scrub. There are a lot more. It's a very useful item is tea. Not just a nice cuppa.

Well, Billy, you and Michael are perfectionists. So happy you don’t take the easy route. The thought and labor (ouch on your poor knees 😧) that you put in, just gives such a high caliber appearance to the altar area. As you noted, it will retain that beautiful look for decades to come. Extremely well done 👍.

Billy and Michael! That praedella ( the proper name for it) has turned out so beautifully! But what I am so incredibly touched by is the reverence you have for this space. De consecrated or not, the “vibes” from all those years of being a sacred place where joys and sorrows, and, even just plain ordinariness, have left their marks. I, as a Catholic priest, find all of this care ver special. I have no doubt that you will reap a hundredfold!

Sorry, Billy, I had a chuckle when you said that no one has a clue about how to put the organ back together 😂. It was such a big project to take it apart and so many of us involved. I have lots of photos and video, and will send any useful stuff over. Father Paul will need to be on constant video call. The wood looks incredible. We are considering buying a Mid Century house with the original floors, so Osmo may come in useful.

It's a beautiful floor, Billy. If only you had time to do the same to the wood of the altar wall, as it is so dark and gloomy. Such a fun restoration to watch!
@meredithharvath4934 Жыл бұрын
It's possible there is a marble sanctuary floor under the wood. After 1965, after Vatican II, altars were moved from the front wall to the center of the sanctuary. The sanctuary (altar floor) would have had a high altar where you are placing the organ and would have had a kneeling altar rail around it. The faithful used to kneel at the altar rail to receive holy communion. Removing the rail would have damaged the floor so they may have covered it with wood then. Impressed with your wonderful work as always.

Goodness, that is just gorgeous! I would have suggested tea also, for the staining of the tile. With the beautiful wood, it all looks fantastic. You do everything with so much class! Good luck reassembling the organ. I’m holding my breath. I don’t know much about organs specifically, but I’m a musician and I know they are massively complicated beasts. Even if you (and dear Michael) get it assembled correctly, my hunch is that if it hasn’t been played for 20 odd years, many parts will need restoration (by an expert?) in order for it to sound good, not to mention tuning it, which is a task for a pro anyway. So “bon courage” and I wish you well with this project!
