Aussie here. Tim Minchin is just so brilliant. I've a DVD called 'Are You Ready For This'. Possibly his first major show. Yes, he's outspoken but intelligently so. However he was chosen to write the music to 'Matilda: The Musical'. His name was mentioned to the producers as a possibility, so they went to his show. Now, they could easily see he was smart, funny and a brilliant pianist but we're worried he was too 'brash' to write for a kid's musical..... that was before his encore where he sang 'White Wine in the Sun'. Consistently voted the best Australian Christmas song from so many demographics. I could go on about his work but he gave a graduation speech at a Western Australian Uni where he had studied. It's HILARIOUS and shows a lot of his personality. (Plus, the 'Dean" (?) is in shot for most of it and he's trying not to laugh too much!) but it's just special and intelligent and fun with some major points within the whimsy. ETA: The speech is called '9 Life Lessons'.

"Ready for this" is Tim Minchins 3rd major live show. His first one was "Darkside" and his second one was "So Rock". Darkside is the show that gave him his breakthrough which he perfected over several years before being discovered and it brought him to Edinbourgh Fringe festival where he won best newcomer with Darkside. So Rock was a somewhat hastily written follow up that was a bit more hit or miss whereas "Ready For This" is more thoroughly developed.

Daniel, Tim Minchin is an incredibly talented musician/comedian and you can see why his material would be seen as a 'slight' to many conservatives and blasphemous. However, to me it is brilliant sarcasm that is missing from this world....something that English comedians could deliver in spades. Thank you for showing it and you should explore Tim's work more.

You have to check out Storm, a 9 minute beat poem, I prefer the live version over the animation because I'm just enamored by his persona. He's also a classicly trained musician with an amazing voice. As already mentioned below, his role as Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar is crazy great. BTW, if you've never listened to that album, you would love it. Some of the best music ever written.

*cracks knucles* Prejudice, Storm, Rock and Roll Nerd, Confessions, The Fence, Lullaby, 15 Minutes, If I Didn't Have You, Fuck the Poor, 3 Minute Song, Song for Wossy, 10 Foot Cock and a Few Hundred Virgins... Those are just a start. Really you can't go wrong with anything but those will give you a good idea of the range of humor and sarcasm he employed. He went on to write the books for a few Broadway shows (Matilda and Ground Hog's Day) and also killed it playing Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar. He's back to recording but his latest stuff is much more mellow and not as biting, though there are a few gems in there.

His plethora of work includes Judas (Jesus Christ Superstar), Atticus Fetch (Californication), two award winning musicals (Matilda & Groundhog day), amazing TV series (Upright), many great interviews & discussions eg: Tim Minchin and Richard Dawkins in Conversation and his most recent album "Apart Together" (not comedic but still wonderful)! The man is so talented. Comedian, songwriter, actor, pianist, and not a bad singer. Check his performance as Judas in the arena tour of Jesus Christ Superstar. He is a very intelligent and well spoken gentleman in interviews. There are a couple college graduation speeches that he gave floating around on KZbin as well that are good. Like George Carlin, he has a good grasp on the use of words and language. The use of the cuss words are intentional to make a point and are not just thrown in for cheap laughs. The song "Prejudice" is genius on several levels. For a beautiful, serious song try Carry You from his TV series, Upright. So many songs to chose from really.

'The Good Book' would be my suggestion if you want more about atheism. Lot of witty lyrics and good piano all around though, can't really go wrong. 'Perfect' is probably his breakthrough song that is actually very wholesome and beautiful, so as a comedian he surprised people that way too.

Tim is a pretty famous atheist. He and Ricky Gervais got into a fairly contentious twitter exchange recently about bullfighting. He sang Judas Iscariot in Jesus Christ Superstar Arena version in 2013. He has written 2 musicals Matilda and Groundhog Day. Lin Manuel Miranda presented Tim with the Olivier award Matilda. It received 7 Olivers a record at the time and is now tied with Hamilton which has also received 7. Matilda received 4 Tony Awards and is set to be released as a movie next year. Definitely an adult humor performer. "Prejudice" is a very famous bit of his. He also is an actor and has been on television in the series Californication and most recently in Upright an Australian production and plays Friar Tuck in the 2018 Robin Hood. Busy guy.

This was hilarious; thanks for introducing me to this comedian. I googled and found the song "Aquarela do Brasil" (aka just "Brazil") upon which this is apparently based, and its style is Samba. For a similar type of comedy, I recommend Tom Lehrer. "The Vatican Rag" is a good starting point. It's about the "Vatican II" council in 1965 where the Catholic church made many rule changes to help make itself more... accessible? commercial? something like that... Others - "The Folk Song Army", "National Brotherhood Week", and sadly, "I wanna go back to Dixie" - still seem relevant today.

He is so meticulous, and because the music and orchestration have to be worked on so long, you know that every detail gets worked out. There's nothing sloppy. There's nothing wasted. The "miracle" incompletely referenced at the close is his admission that it's the first time he didn't fumble ANY of the lyrics. Please respond to "Cont" or "The Fence" or "White Wine in the Sun" or "Not Perfect" or "Confessions" or ...

If you haven't tried him yet I can thoroughly recommend Bill Bailey. Both a comedic & musical genius - he really is, no exaggeration. Brief example of his musicianship: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oIHMiGaMbL99obs

A masterpiece of absolute genius from a master polemicist. Be careful though, man. If you think about it too long, the razor sharp and irrefutable logic implied by the sarcasm will test your powers of self delusion to breaking point, until one day you might find yourself wondering if being raised to believe a thing is a good enough reason to believe a thing.

I have an apology to make I'm afraid I've made a big mistake I turned my face away from you, Lord I was too blind to see the light I was too weak to feel Your might I closed my eyes; I couldn't see the truth, Lord But then like Saul on the Damascus road, You sent a messenger to me, and so Now I've have had the truth revealed to me Please forgive me all those things I said I'll no longer betray you, Lord I will pray to you instead And I will say thank you, thank you Thank you, God Thank you, thank you Thank you, God... Thank you, God, for fixing the cataracts of Sam's mum I had no idea, but it's suddenly so clear now I feel such a cynic, how could I have been so dumb? Thank you for displaying how praying works: A particular prayer in a particular church Thank you Sam for the chance to acknowledge this Omnipotent ophthalmologist Thank you, God, for fixing the cataracts of Sam's mum I didn't realize that it was so simple But you've shown a great example of just how it can be done You only need to pray in a particular spot To a particular version of a particular god, And if you pull that off without a hitch, He will fix one eye of one middle-class white bitch I know in the past my outlook has been limited I couldn't see examples of where life had been definitive But I can admit it when the evidence is clear, As clear as Sam's mum's new cornea (And that's extremely clear! ) Thank you, God, for fixing the cataracts of Sam's mum I have to admit that in the past I have been skeptical But Sam described this miracle and I am overcome! How fitting that the sighting of a sight-based intervention Should open my eyes to this exciting new dimension It's like someone put an eye chart up in front of me And the top five letters say: I C, G O D Thank you, Sam, for showing how my point of view has been so flawed I assumed there was no God at all but now I see that's cynical It's simply that his interests aren't particularly broad He's largely undiverted by the starving masses, Or the inequality between the various classes He gives out strictly limited passes, Redeemable for surgery or two-for-one glasses I feel so shocking for historically mocking Your interests are clearly confined to the ocular I bet given the chance, you'd eschew the divine And start a little business selling contacts online f*ck me Sam, what are the odds That of history's endless parade of gods That the God you just happened to be taught to believe in Is the actual one and he digs on healing, But not the AIDS-ridden African nations Nor the victims of the plague, nor the flood-addled Asians, But healthy, privately-insured Australians With common and curable corneal degeneration This story of Sam's has but a single explanation: A surgical God who digs on magic operations No, it couldn't be mistaken attribution of causation Born of a coincidental temporal correlation Exacerbated by a general lack of education Vis-a-vis physics in Sam's parish congregation And it couldn't be that all these pious people are liars It couldn't be an artefact of confirmation bias A product of groupthink, A mass delusion, An Emperor's New Clothes-style fear of exclusion No, it's more likely to be an all-powerful magician Than the misdiagnosis of the initial condition, Or one of many cases of spontaneous remission, Or a record-keeping glitch by the local physician No, the only explanation for Sam's mum's seeing: They prayed to an all-knowing superbeing, To the omnipresent master of the universe, And he quite liked the sound of their muttered verse. So for a bit of a change from his usual stunt Of being a sexist, racist, murderous cunt He popped down to Dandenong and just like that Used his powers to heal the cataracts of Sam's mum Of Sam's mum Thank you God for fixing the cataracts of Sam's mum! I didn't realize that it was such a simple thing I feel such a dingaling, what ignorant scum! Now I understand how prayer can work: A particular prayer in a particular church In a particular style with a particular stuff And for particular problems that aren't particularly tough, And for particular people, preferably white And for particular senses, preferably sight A particular prayer in a particular spot To a particular version of a particular god And if you get that right, he just might Take a break from giving babies malaria And pop down to your local area To fix the cataracts of your mum!
