Fun lil fact about Miss Alissa up there, when Annette, the second singer of Nightwish fell ill with a bad case of the flu and had to be hospitalized, Tuomas asked the audience at the concert that night if they would be alright with hearing Alissa and Elize Ryd, who were on the tour as part of Kamelot's performance (the openers) sing the songs as best as they could. Elize had previously auditioned for Nightwish after the first singer was let go, so she was familiar with some of the old songs, but both had printouts of the lyrics and had about 20 minutes to listen to the songs as quick as they could. There's a fun documentary about it on KZbin but a few days later, Floor would swoop in to finish up the tour

She's also dating Doyle from Misfits and they're precious and it's hilarious to see pictures of them because she's like 5'4" and super slender and he's like a 6 foot brick shithouse of a man but he will tell anyone who will listen how badass she is, it's super cute

Part of the Nightwish Documentary "Please learn the setlist in 48 hours" which also shows how special Floor is. Alyssa is great, she sounded better in 30 minutes of rehearsing than Annette ever did. That's right, I'm a hater. Not really a fan of Tarja either but at least she's talented.

Yeah, I was just about to suggest that. She has a great singing voice. She's a guest singer in Liar Lair, by Kamelot. Roy Khan, the band's lead singer at that time, is incredible. He is classically trained in opera. i think. But he definitely doesn't sing opera in this song! It's a powerful song with a great music video. It almost seems its based on an epic movie. Correction: Kamelot's lead singer at this time was Tommy Karevik. He definitely has great power and presence in this performance.

This is a very gentle song. A lot of their other music is a lot more technical, and a LOT heavier. If you want more with the same vocalist - Alissa White-Gluz - check out As The Pages Burn, Avalanche or The Race. You can also check out Reason To Believe if you want to hear her clean vocals. Their previous vocalist - Angela Gossow - also absolutely slays, in a different fashion. Check out all-time favourite Nemesis or Ravenous, preferrably live, Tokyo 2008!

Arch Enemy's former front (current manager) Angela Gossow is a force of nature. 'The Day You Died' from the Tyrants of the Rising Sun dvd is a masterclass in emotional growling and feeling in death metal. Drummer Daniel Erlandson (probably butchered that spelling) is a beast, heavily involved in the arrangement process in studio. Michael Amott (flying V) is the main songwriter, band founder and self taught guitarist.

Arch Enemy was quite simultaneous with Otep so I don't know if I can call them pioneer's of screaming female vocals. However they had another before Alissa that is now the bands manager, and some fans of the band prefer the previous singer. They are as a group considered a Swedish melodic death metal band, however these days the members are a mix from different countries. Think you should also checkout Versailles - Faith and decision ( m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/d5XLl3hsfrmZpbM ), lots of interesting details there.

Arch Enemy have been around for a while. Their previous singer, Angela Gossow, is also very good, and worth a listen. I would recommend Ravenous, from their Wages Of Sin album. It's a very fun song, with some surprises. Also, watching Arch Enemy live is an amazing experience. They are all excellent musicians (it is a supergroup, after all) and they really enjoy being on stage. They are technically just as good as in the studio, but with the added atmosphere of being live. And Alyssa sings just as well live as on album.

Good analysis! These guys have been doing this for around 20 years, and have shown plenty of times they are virtuoso musicians, but they keep most of their songs simple and straightforward so they can showcase the vocalists. They've had two of the greatest screamers ever, in Angela Gossow and Alissa White-Gluz (whom you saw here). My way to compare them is, Alissa is gorgeous woman who can scream like a banshee, while Angela (also a beautiful woman) was genuinely terrifying. Angela recruited Alissa as her successor after doing this for 14(!) years. Here is a good intro clip for Angela: "Nemesis": kzbin.info/www/bejne/pHa4kqyGh955Y7s It starts hard so brace yourself.

Arch Enemy guitarist Michael Amott also has a killer side project band, Spiritual Beggars, that sound completely different than this, but are just as amazing. Check them out. You'll see just how versatile he is. One of my faves is this one... kzbin.info/www/bejne/fH_cZpSEga2CmcU

These Canadians have some really nasty, angry pixie folk I'll tell you that. She was damn impressive in her Agonist years and is no less now, and in person is one of the sweetest and most unassuming persons you'll ever meet.

I'm sorry your Nemesis reaction/review got taken down. It ain't right. It had pauses in it and still. They must have a different way of checking videos down under. It could be worth finding out the requirements so it doesn't happen again.

I really enjoy Arch Enemy, but the songs aren't the most complex out there even if the musicians are all great (and of course complexity doesn't equal good necessarily). This song to me sounds a bit empty compared to most of their output, I'm not sure why. Two suggestions for you that I think you would enjoy, if you don't mind :) Lovebites - Shadowmaker (there's a weirdly placed ad in the middle of the music video just as a warning) Ningen Isu- Heartless Scat

I really like the fact that you dissect the song as well as reaction to them. Kudos to you fine sir! As an intriguing path to follow: Arch Enemy's bassist plays also in another band that is more AOR and everything else you could want from 1975-85 that you can possibly imagine: The Night Flight Orchestra. Their Turn to Miami, Divinyls or Midnight Flyer are my recommendations. AND! The singer and guitarist of the NFO are from a metal band called Soilwork. Their discography isn't that familiar to me, so a newer song will be my recommendation: Stålfagel. And as a finn I must add: Although this band is long since burried, Sentenced is something that I recommend highly. Noose(the name says it all), Mourn(the lead guitarist's goodbye to his late grandfather), End of the Road (live version. The last song of the band's final album and the last show) and probably the best named song ever(in my humble opinion at least) Excuse me while I kill myself. I should link the article that tells how studies have found that metal music brings joy to people when they are feeling down. This as an explanation for the prevalence of suicidal vocabulary when talking about Sentenced. neurosciencenews.com/heavy-metal-music-mental-health-14642/amp/

The bassist, Sharlee D'Angelo, is in a bunch of different bands. Witchery is probably my favourite of all the bands he's in, they play really fun "cartoonish" thrash/death metal. Spiritual Beggars is also really good (Michael Amott from Arch Enemy is also in this band). They play 70's style groove rock. Then there's Black Earth, which is a live-only project consisting of the original lineup of Arch Enemy where they only play songs from their first three albums.

Just discovered you a few reactions ago--I love watching someone discover my favorite artists for the first time. Nightwish, Jinjer, Band-Maid, Babymetal, Arch Enemy...Common thread? Kick-ass women. Here is another that will not just melt your face, but might vaporize it: Lovebites "When Destinies Align": kzbin.info/www/bejne/nn2plp9_bpiJoa8

I like how you pointed out the way they kind of lead the growling and decidedly non-melodic vocals into an actual melody, by ever so slightly hinting at it with the underlying instrumentation. This is an often over-looked thing IMO. I am personally not a particularly great fan of Arch Enemy or other Gothenburg-style modern melodeath, but I can appreciate some musical aspects of it. However, the only growls I really truly like are the deep death metal ones, the near-guttural kind, and I only like them when they're used for good effect. Like the ones you hear in bands such as Opeth, where they add an extra vocal dimension. Occasional screams can work to accentuate things as well and I am all for that, but anyone can scream until their voice breaks, takes some extra effort to produce a real growl, and it's best saved for situations that warrant it. And now that you mentioned that kind of melodical "dubbing", I realized that yeah, even Åkerfeldts (Opeth) amazing growling performances back in the day always follow a distinct melodic line accentuated by the other instruments, mostly the guitars. I suppose that's why they sound so much better than most, and feel more appropriate in the songs.

I can't help but always come away disappointed when I don't hear Alyssa's clean vox (yeah I know you can technically hear it for a bit). Now don't get me wrong, I'm not one of those 'screaming sux' kind of guys. But her clean stuff is just so good that it seems like a waste when she doesn't use it. And I don't listen to her regularly, but it seems like the vast majority of the time she doesn't use them. Not every song needs clean and harsh, but it does lend to the dynamics... and not to be insulting to AE or their fans, but the music is just too simple for me. Yeah, it's hella nice to groove to once or twice, but it doesn't have that staying power that will have me coming back day after day after week after month. Just a little bit of variation in, well, anything, would have done well for this song. Compare this to The Agonist's Thank You, Pain. That is just a vastly superior song in every way. Sorry, AE fans. ;o;

The drummer got bored with the speed and was just messing around. The better band was with the second singer Angela Gossow. Angela left the band but remains their manager and is married to the lead guitarist. Alissa (the singer in this video) was in a band called The Agonist where Angela met her. Angela herself offered the gig and now she has been the singer for about... four years I believe. Anyway as many AE fans will agree it was way better with Angela.
