It was also during a period of renewed interest in things British, the so-called Cool Britannia. Americans at the time were thoroughly interested in the pop culture of Britain and most would consider themselves Anglophiles. Nowadays, I think the public school system and all the immigrants we've brought in have flipped it. More Americans hate Britain and see it as a relic of colonialism and everything bad in the world.

I laughed so hard at the pillow fight comment. I'm the oldest of three girls and when this came out I was about 20 and into different music. This is the music my youngest sister would blast through the house, screaming with her little friends. The Spice Girls were an interesting phenomenon and this was an enormous hit.
