I can see that this guy hit your funny nerve good. I live in Australia as a Canadian expat. And I can tell you the whole country is filled with crazy funny Australians. Aussies don't take themselves, or anybody else for that matter, seriously. Taking the pi$$ Is not only a national pastime. It's a requirement for citizenship.
