Emily, I'm over 30 years of doing this kind of work. There's ALWAYS a learning curve to ANYTHING you do. Getting in your head only serves to make you just that much more frustrated. Aaron did you a huge favor by letting you have the time to work on the piece. Nobody just picks up a welding gun and gets it the first few times. Youre human. You're going to make mistakes. Lighten up on yourself. It's just metal and it can be redone. Y'all are doing the ways that most of us would do already. So the sins won't be seen. He's a really good teacher, trust what he's telling you to do. Any restoration has screw ups all over them. It's not like you can't cut a bad patch out. I saw a big piece you haven't cut a patch from. Yes, it's good to soak them. But when it's gets done to brass tacks, it'll get covered with filler and paint.

Welding sheet metal is an art! I have shrunk areas with a weld bead when they have been stretched because of an impact. You are doing fine, Just keep at it. Use a copper plate behind your welds where you can, it acts as a heat sink, reduces burn through and helps your welding.

It's great to see another tri 5 coming back to life. I have had my 55 Nomad since 1974, and I'm rebuilding another one. I noticed with a lift that when you need to work on the car, the legs of the lift are always in your way.lol. Your doing it right and welding just takes practice. it's rewarding when you see how good it looks after you're done. Enjoy it unill your eyes start going when you're old. You just need more light to see before you strike your arc. Remember, let the welds cool on their own, one spot at a time to minimize warping. Heat is your enemy. Take your time. Great job!

One thing I can't recommend enough is Super Build Primer. it really makes the fine tuning much easier. They even make an Optex version that has a "built-in" guide coat. Used it on my dad's '56, and it made for much less glazing little spots and knocking down the high spots.
@380.motorsportsАй бұрын
I was just going to comment to use a magnet in the future to hold your patches, then you did! But I’ll add to that trick and say pick up a package of the small cheap magnets that are easy to place right where you need them. Also useful for holding pattern paper in place for larger patches. 101 uses for these little magnetic helpers.

When doing patches especially when you have a patch panel, cut the patch panel slightly larger than the needed size, THEN overlay the patch area with the patch panel and cut both panels to size, while overlayed, that will leave you a perfect sized patch panel to fill the needed hole.

Dent pulling, Sometimes it helps to apply heat with a heat gun to pull or shrink small areas. I find with newer cars having the car outside in warm weather is best with the gle gun method. On 50's cars the metal is so heavy adding heat in spots helps a lot. Just some info for your future projects..
