I had an old Eastern Airlines captain in 1986 tell me one thing that makes it simple. You're going to make the shortest turn to the outbound heading. Once you determine that, you can then know exactly which entry to use. It works on right and left hand turns. It is far simpler than the video. I've used it for over 32 years with a major airline. This is the technique that should always be taught.

I jump in here because Greg seems silent. I was taught the same thing a long time ago. When you cross the fix, you choose an entry that results in the least amount of heading change from your current heading. The difficulty with this system is it's not an exact match with the 70 / 110 / 180 zones that are common now. You'll end up with a more parallel entries. An examiner may or may not bust you for it. Most pilots i know will mentally overlay the holding pattern on the DG, using the airplane center as the VOR. The inbound course goes on the radial assigned. Then draw your racetrack on the right or left side based on the ATC instruction. Print out the DG picture the poster gave you and try drawing some. With a few hours practice you can just glance at your DG and immediately "see" the racetrack and know the best way to enter it. You will be right 99% of the time and really close the other 1%.

I use a similar technique using three fingers (thumb, index, middle). Right thumb for right hand turns and opposite for left hand turns still apply. Now the finger assignment is as follows: LIMIT FINGERS Thumb = parallel entry limit Middle finger = tear drop entry limit Reference finger = index finger = current hdg Index -> Thumb = Parallel Entry Index -> Middle = Tear Drop Outside any of them = Direct This is more of a numbers game and the hand technique is more of a reminder but the hands greatly help when you are just starting. This process involves a step by step elimination and after a few repeats, this can be done mentally which helps in flight. In this example we will assume that the radial to hold is R020 and we are flying at a heading of 360. Standard hold. 1. Spread out the three fingers. 2. Identify your current HDG and associate it with your index finger. In this example we are heading 360 3. Now that you have your index as your HDG, think of your index finger as a heading indicator and find which side of the HI does the radial to hold lie. R020 lies on the right side of 360 4. Eliminate the impossible entry / finger. In this example, since you need the radial to hold on a parallel entry to be on the left side, eliminate that entry / finger specifically the thumb in this situation. This leaves us with two options, either it's a tear drop entry or a direct entry. 5. Look at the gap of the two remaining fingers. The index-middle has a smaller gap compared to the index-thumb gap. 6. Add or subtract the gap (70° for small, 110° for big), this will be the assigned number for the limiting finger. How do you know when to add or subtract? If going right you add, going left you subtract. Just like the HDG indicator. In this example 360 + 70 will be 070 7. Evaluate. If it falls at the index to the limiting finger, then it is the associated entry. If not, then it is direct. It is never the eliminated entry. In this example, 020 is between 360 and 070 so the appropriate entry will be tear drop. So if you get used to it, it will be as follows: 1. Find hdg 2. Find which side is the radial to hold. 3. Find the limit hdg 4. Check if radial to hold falls in the gap. Yes = associated entry No = Direct Hope this helps. Sorry for the long wall of text. This is my first time on sharing my techniques on the internet.

When it is NOT. Joe , in your examples you never mentioned the location of your airplane w.r.t. to the fix. Without this info one CANNOT decide the holding entry procedure. All are making it a mountain out of a mole. I really appreciate your effort. Best wishes.

I am currently an instrument rating student. Very close to my checkride. I have tried, Cpt. Joe, the information on books, my own ways and other videos information on how to figure out the holding entry en route fast and correct, especially when close to the fix, but none of those options have worked well for me. The method in this video solved my issues, and BAM!!! Now I can figure it out fast, correct and easy, even without placing my finger on the HI. I recommend and will share this video with other pilot students. I appreciate it.

The easiest way I have learned this method is just looking at where the plane is according to the fix. You can see whether you were going to have to parallel, teardrop or direct based on your location. No need to do math except for the written test because they may want exact heading numbers the way we use to figure out the magnetic bearing to an NDB based on a magnetic heading add the pointer.You should also remember that your initial turn inbound except for being on the radio itself should be into the holding oval which is known as the protected area.
@KingOfBanks5 жыл бұрын
If you hold your hands out in front of your face, palms out and fingers facing the sky, your thumb line will form the 70⁰/110⁰ cuts for a left or right pattern. You have the inbound then add either the 70⁰ or 110⁰, write that down and the reciprocal forms the opposite entry limit. E.g. hold on 280 radial, left pattern = left hand up, thumb points to the right so add 70⁰ right = 350 TO forms the sector 3 and sector 1 boundary and the reciprocal (170⁰ TO) forms the inbound for the sector 2 and 3 boundary (with the reciprocal of 280⁰ = 100⁰ forming the barrier between sectors 1 and 2). Practice on a piece of paper, it doesn't require a compass rose.

At 5 minutes, the holding pattern drawn is right turns, and he proceeds to tell everyone it's left turns. Personally, I think this approach is confusing and unfortunately inaccurate. Martha King's approach makes it easiest to draw out quickly. During my instrument training, I would draw these out while flying, and this approach seems a lot more difficult. Adding or subtracting 70 degrees in the direction of the hold, from the radial line, rotating from the fix, is the easiest in my opinion.
@ueberalleberge3 жыл бұрын
It’s a great approach to the right result. I found it also very helpful during instrument written test prep - because you can not bring other helping aids in, to use your E6B instead of the compass. You can just turn the rotating plate of the e6b to your inbound course, then do all the rest explained in this video and this way you might have a legal aid for your written Instrument test with the FAA to get the correct result.

This is by far most easiest and fastest way to determine which holding entry to do. Thank you very much for this simple and fast solution. It takes extra few seconds but is anyway by far fastest method around. Once again many thanks.

I am not a professional pilot but instead of using the thumb I add 70 to my HEADING for standard holding pattern. For the left, I substract 70. Then add 180 as my imaginairy line. example: Heading is 300, Standard Holding 160. So 300 + 70 == 010. 010 + 180 == 190. Meaning a direct entry to the holding 160.

I'm a flight instructor...I use this technique as well. A few months ago I accompanied a instrument rated pilot on a navigation flight (who fair enough hadn't flown in a while) and was absolutely horrified when he was unable to comply with a holding a holding instruction from ATC. He was making a complete mess of it! It obviously caught me off guard completely because I didn't think an IR certified pilot would forget how to fly a basic holding pattern. I had to take over & fly the hold for him. Using this technique I was able to quickly jog his memory. On the way back we made a quick detour to the GFA & I made him fly a flew holds. He flew them perfectly.

Hi, Cpt. Joe, I got your explanation right, and then came back to the below question form my ATPL Q Bank, and it doesn't work... any idea why? The published holding procedure is: - All turns to the right - 1 minute outbound - Inbound magnetic track 052 You are approaching the fix on magnetic track 232 (no wind). Select the appropriate entry procedure: A. Parallel B. Either teardrop or parallel (correct answer) C. Direct D. Teardrop Please help :-) Thank you in advance,
@Wizabeard2 жыл бұрын
Because your heading is the same as the line separating parallel and offset entries. You have 5 degrees of wiggle room, so it could be either parallel or offset. So the correct answer would be B.

Hi dear captain joe, i should be thankful from you for you nice videos, in this video i think a mistake happened in left turn holdings on minutes 5:00. the inbound course of a holding should be ends on the holding fix or station, but you've drawn the station at the beginning of the in bound course , and the entry in this holding for left turn is the direct entry with a glance which if you had drawn correctly it has parallel entry as you said in video. thank you again and wish you all the best

If you are in the cockpit with the DG or Heading indicator in front of you..... take your pen or pencil and basically do the same thing. As you train your brain slowly start removing the pencil and imaging the pencil in position. You’ll be a shoe in for entries on your instrument checkride.

Dear Joe... correct me if I'm wrong but the holding shown at 05:00 should be drawn on the other side. Its not possible to fly a teardrop... 😉only a parallel if the holding is RH...
@jamespkeane5 жыл бұрын
That teardrop depiction at 5:00 is off as others have pointed out. Just to further clarify, the only issue with the imagery presented (of the aircraft entering the holding pattern) is that the aircraft should be shown PRIOR to the holding fix and then make the left turn for the teardrop entry. Remember this is a LEFT turn procedure.

thanks Joe, much impressed from your video. But, I got questioned in your video at 5:39 in determining entry. The airplane was approaching from 90 degrees radial, how could pilot make a teardrop entry from that direction. Won't the parallel entry easier way to enter into the holding fix? I noticed one mistake in your explanation.... the holding pattern is a right turn standard pattern not a left turn nonstandard holding pattern.

Love your videos Cap. But your explanation of how to determine which entry we should do is the most complicated I've ever seen. It's enough saying that if you are coming from the opposite direction of the inbound leg and after crossing the fix you end up inside the racetrack then you perform a teardrop entry and if after crossing the fix you end up outside the racetrack then you perform a parallel entry. Like I said, love your videos and think they are the coolest thing. Cheers.

I think there is one more thing not being explained . The outbound heading can be different sometime. Let's think two examples. 1. Hold "NE" side of JOE VOR, on radial of 045. 2. Hold "NW" side of JOE VOR, on radial of 045. First example's outbound HDG is literally 045 degree. However, the second example's outbound HDG is 225. This result might be able to lead to the fault holding pattern enrtry. In this video, Captain Joe clearly explained about holding pattern entry. But, I just wanna add some more information. :)

However, i'm studying for the written exam using Sheppard and this method does not seem to result in the correct answer for Question 1744, Figure 112, #1. Either this method is incorrect for a small subset of questions, or more likely i don't understand how to properly set up the problem. Here is the question: While on a heading of 350 flying direct to the 15 DME fix from the ABC Vortac, ATC issues you this clearance...'Hold west of the ONE FIVE DME FIX, LEFT TURNS, FIVE MILE LEGS, ON THE ZERO NINE ZERO RADIAL OF THE ABC VORTAC. EXPECT FURTHER CLEARANCE AT 2215Z'. What is the recommended entry? The correct answer is direct. However using the Thumb Method in this video i'm getting Parallel. I find it to work PERFECTLY if you include the BAM in your call outs. "We are gonna be conducting a direct entry, BAM!"

As a commercial pilot, can I put new pilots at ease and just say. You need a basic understanding of holds, but in reality the GPS and or charts will guide you how to enter a hold. And if all else fails, fly in a literal circle 🤣 just tell ATC if your stuck.

When approaching the holding pattern, an aircraft makes a left turn on to heading 90 degrees for 1 minute. It then turns left to capture the inbound magnetic track of 270 degrees. What is the appropriate entry procedure?

Awesome video. Nice little refresher, before I go for an interview and sim for the first time in 10years! Wish me luck. Lol. I will need it. We just don't fly raw data in the line anymore

I was just thinking that. It's ironic that he's telling them to hold. Also I don't think lga has a vor, at least not under that name

Hi Joe correct me if i'm wrong. In your explanation on non standard holding, i think you got the pattern wrong. That's a right turn pattern but you were giving example of a left turn pattern. Thank you
