2:32 The recipe change when they started putting actual pumpkin in the latte is what killed the flavor to me. It used to be SO good and I didn't care it didn't have actual pumpkin because the latte is called "pumpkin SPICE", which has always been a spice mixture used for pumpkin pies since the 1890's. For over a hundred years prior to the latte it was understood as a spice that compliments pumpkin, not a spice that is made from pumpkin.

I didn’t know that…so that’s why it tasted so off and weird to the last time I tried it! It’s heavier and sweeter than I remembered, uck. I used to love pumpkin spice latte in my college years (that was over a decade ago), so I assumed that it was my taste buds that changed.

I work as a Starbucks barista and this year it came out in august. The problem is the fact that we (my store) run so quick that last year we ran out before Halloween. Starbucks also changes the recipe every year so the drink never tastes the same from year to another. In addition to all that, we can add pumpkin sauce to anything so we have a latte, cappuccino, Frappuccino, iced coffee, hot coffee, cold brew, nitro cold brew, and literally whatever drink you want. On top of all that we have many different ways the specific drinks are made, like the new version this year is a cold brew with vanilla cold foam mixed with the pumpkin sauce and pumps of vanilla inside the cold brew. This comment took me almost the whole video to write and a few points I would have made matpat covered in the video (example: it’s the only drink around fall, while we have up to four drinks around winter)

What does being a Brit have to do with it? Starbuckses are just as common here as they are in the States, and Pumpkin Spice dominates the autumnal menu here, too. Your ignorance of PSL has nothing to do with your national identity.

@@febotroilo7225 I'm aware it's on the seasonal menu but was referring to the popularity, not its availability.
@adlirez2 жыл бұрын
@@febotroilo7225 it kinda does. The PSL may be a huge trend for you in the US, but it's just not as popular in other countries, especially countries who don't have autumn or Thankgiving-esque holidays to speak of. Here in the Philippines, PSL is never spoken of. The Philippines is a tropical country, and everyone's way too obsessed with 3-in-1 coffee, which is the immortal trend here. I literally never heard of the PSL until I saw this video. I asked my parents about it, and they've never heard of the PSL until I told them. That's how obscure PSL is here. Sometimes nationality *does* have an effect on our "ignorance". It's like how cheese is trending here. You might not understand the trend, but we do, and the products created by it are insanely good. P.S. Yes, we do have Starbucks here, but it is expensive for us to afford to buy regularly. Besides, why buy an expensive cup of coffee when you can buy a coffee packet that gives you a similar experience for almost a hundredth of the price? Coffee packets are all the rage here, and everyone's shameless about it.

Video Idea Suggestion: How to optimize your gas station self-serve Icees in the fastest time. So I like the occasional icee, and I had a chance to pick one up at a gas station the other day. If you don't tap the glass of Icee solution against the countertop a couple dozen times before you finish filling up your cup when you finally go to take a sip of Icee goodness through your spoon straw, as you poke the surface of your beverage, you will be met with dissappointment as it deflates like a sad balloon. So there I was, filling up a cold one at the self-serve Freeze-E machine. I was tapping the cup against the countertop to make the icee settle, letting the air bubbles escape and as I re-re-refill my icee to get the most coke-cola icee goodness I could for a dollar and a thought occured to me. "Am I doing this right? Surely there is a more optimal way of compacting the icee into the jumbo sized icee cup than filling the cup to the top and gently tapping the cup against the countertop to sift out the air bubbles." I muttered to myself as the line continued to grow behind me, each gas station patron social distancing behind me, seething with contempt. Any chance we could get a Food Theory analysis of the packing science of frozen beverages and the mechanical dynamics behind finding the optimal sifting motion to pack even more frozen goodness into each glass?

I don't think I've ever had a pumpkin spice latte at Starbucks. That said, I owe a great debt of gratitude to Starbucks for making Pumpkin Spice the flavor of fall. It may only be sold once a year, but there is no scarcity in this house! Last year, we bought enough pumpkin spice tea and pancake mix that we only just ran out and this year we have added pudding to our haul. If creamer didn't go bad, we'd stock up on that too, lol.

MatPat has done a few videos covering stuff like that in the past. I haven't seen them in a while so I won't be able to perfectly explain the concept, but basically people subconsciously enjoy being in conflict rather than being peaceful, especially if they're on the winning side of the conflict. So, with all the negative press around pumpkin spice, people are more likely to try it because the trend isn't dying out and people want to like it so they're on the winning side of the argument. His Film Theory video on Trump's election describes the phenomenon pretty well.

Brewed coffee smells like acid to me. I don't understand why people like it. The only time it ever smells good is when people add extra things to it, and it still can't hide the taste. So yeah, I fully understand why people claim they like coffee yet the commercially ground and produced coffees they like are the ones that routinely try to bury the actual flavor of coffee. I accept that people like it. Different people have different tastes. I just don't understand why they like it.
@Call-me-Al4 жыл бұрын
@@AlashiaTuol I love acidic things. I don't know if that has anything to do with my not as low stomach acid pH as is normal or not. I used to eat lemons like others ate oranges, as a small kid. I also ate oranges as oranges. And grape fruit. Some people don't have saliva enzymes that are efficient in breaking down carbs while chewing, and those people usually are utterly bewildered by the fondness for bread the people with abnormally efficient saliva enzymes can have, because they don't get the same flavours nor the same brain reward effect from it. Genetic diversity is how species become more hardy to environmental changes, because if everyone were the same not only would the same resources get far more competition, but it would be so much easier for us all to die out from single issues.
@AlashiaTuol4 жыл бұрын
@@Call-me-Al I typically love sour and acidic things too. I actually pour key lime juice on top of citrus desserts if they're too sweet, and when purchased, they often are. But coffee is like... @Call-me-Al4 жыл бұрын
@@AlashiaTuol well, the so called "3rd wave" espressos I tried last year left me confused, wretching, and bewildered. The past half decade or maybe decade has had light roasts of coffe being the trend, which seems to taste too much like battery acid to me as espresso, while I absolutely love classic Italian style espressos. The third wave style espressos really don't seem to agree with my stomach nor taste buds. I definitely have a thing for some types of bitter flavours, though. Zucchini and Brussel sprout bitterness used to be really vile to me, but thankfully I have lost the ability to be able to taste the bitter compound in the former and the latter has been commercially bred to not be bitter these days. But even as a child I was quite fond of some types of bitter-sour, like green bell peppers, grape fruits, raw cranberries, and so on, which is why I chalk it up to genetics a lot.

I made a specific cake last month my grandmother used to make when she was still around. Man, I can tell you that I wasn't the only one at the family table who shed a tear in memory. This brain hitting stuff is strong af

Cofee that isn't bitter? Sounds like someone figuring adult chocolate.

Caffeine is an alkaloid which makes coffee alkaline which raises pH and gives a bitter taste. Additives are what cause acidity and reduce pH. Also some coffee brands extract the acidic components depending on the desired taste. It depends on what you buy!

@Reem Barrak Don't worry your not missing out, I mean I've never had the Latte, but Pumpkin itself and Pumpkin pie really isn't the best, like I'll have the pie on Thanksgiving because of tradition but outside of that one day not the best. What's the traditional Middle Eastern food for this time of year? Do you guys even have anything you only eat/drink in a certain season?

Same here. I certainly understand now why the PSL has become a part of American pop culture; the nostalgia factor is undeniable. Having never grown up celebrating Thanksgiving or Halloween (annually), I couldn’t quite relate. This video helps to explain in part why, when I tried Starbucks’ PSL for the first time ever, I was underwhelmed.

You missed the point of the statement. Starbucks is available in many forms all year. This point is that some people are *only* drinking Starbucks for the seasonal item. She didn't say "I haven't had a PSL since last year" she said "I haven't had a Starbucks....."
