It's almost like influencers are a problem and we should stop giving them so much power and attention. I for one prefer to only follow channels that are aware of the power and responsibility that they hold. For example, the moment MatPat figured out that any theorists were causing real world people trouble while trying to solve a "call to arms" puzzle, he shut it down. To him, no video, no answer, was worth causing real people any level of trouble.

Could certainly be possible. More demand means more new employees who are less likely to have years of experience making the pizza. Not to mention at scale it can be hard to get certain ingredients or making things how you originally did. For example when you're small you might've gotten all your basil from your mama's garden but if you're a lot bigger that just ain't going work no more and you start getting the stuff from the same places everyone else does.

keith lee is one of the few food critics i listen to. he keeps his orders anonymous, orders a variety of food, and will even go back to certain locations to follow up. Shops that go under after keith lee reviews are rarely caused by the food. more often than not it’s actions of the staff or owners.

Yeah, I don't think using Keith as an example here was the right move. Whenever he doesn't quite like a food he does say, that it doesn't represent the entirety of their food and that they couls have just had a bad day. If a restaurant goes under it's, as you say, due to the owner's or staff's actions. Like that one where the owner refused to share the huge tip that was specifically given to be shared. But of course it's more convenient to ignore that in this video Edit: just saw he mentioned the tip story. But still, it's not exactly Keith's fault. The owner kinda brought it upon herself by also reacting and replying the way she did.

@@megatronusorionpax4900Keith Lee is more here to talk about how the concept of food influencer is problematic instead of it being just on the influencer themselves. By all accounts he is doing it right, but like mentioned in the video the fan backlash for that one person who took the entire tip bled into a whole other company is a perfect example of why even the most wholesome of food influencers can be problematic. That said Keith is very much a best case scenario, and it’s a shame there really aren’t many other food influencers like him.

I'd say it depends on what kind of person they are. It's like getting recommendations on makeup or skin care from a person who owns their own brand, and actually is a part of the process. They know what is what and can tell you what is worth it and what isn't. If they constantly talk bad about anything but their own brand then it's probably not a reliable source.

it goes both ways. Pros: they have experience making them "experts", it is just a matter of if they remain in the bounds of their expertise. Cons: they are incentivised to trash local competition for profit and use their platform to advertise themselves. Context matters, but i can agree with the sentiment in a context-less void. Reviewing stuff far away (multiple states away) from their hub of business is usually a good sign, up until you notice a pattern between negative reviews and new branches.

I love that Keith, by his own morals, still sticks to the rules as close as he can He gets multiple things and judges them all as objectively as he can "i like it saltier but this is a great ***" etc He stays anonymous as much as he can, often others picking up for him, or disguised, both harder with his popularity now He comments on conditions too, was it busy, was itempty and how that may effect the quality. Another big factor making his reviews so popular is commenting on more than just the food, the people serving it often just as or more important to him Just a good dude who likes good food and good people. This is why I appreciate Mike Chen/Strictly Dumpling as a food reviewer. He is well aware of his influence, and makes it a point to not post negative reviews of small businesses, as the last thing he wants to do is ruin someone's livelihood to bolster his own. the only time you'll ever see him post a megative review is if the food is coming from a major chain, as his opinion isn't going to do any actual harm in that case. this is the sort of thing you'll often see if he's checking out stuff from Costco, trader Joe's, or a major restaurant/resort chain. Even then, I love that regardless of the palce he visits, he gets numerous things from the menu most times, to give a better idea of what htey serve and what's worth trying out. This is something I would love to see more food reviewers nowadays doing, as everyone involved wins.

@SgtSupaman
@SgtSupaman 5 ай бұрын
@@steamsmith2356 , you just need to keep the scale of their reviews in mind in those cases. For instance, if you know it is someone that is cautious with their reviewing (trying to keep it to the higher end), then you know a mid rating must've been fairly bad. People always judge things on their own scale anyway. What you might consider a 3/10 could be someone else's 6/10. As some who spent almost 15 years (2002-2015) rating and reviewing beers online. I learned taste is subjective, and people can have biases and prejudices towards a style of beer. One of the reasons why I stopped reviewing beers is because I found myself being more judgmental when reviewing beers. Just to keep it out of the 80th percentile. Professional beer reviews have subtle ways of saying they did not like a beer. They say they have a scale between 1-100. They never really give a beer a score below 75 or 80. So, the scale is really 75-100, or 1-25. A beer with a score of 81, actually has a 1 or a 6. The second reason why I stopped reviewing beers personally is I ran out of adjectives. Which is bigger than it sounds/reads.

That was the food review equivalent of death by a thousand cuts. When done well, old school food critics still have a place in the modern restaurant industry.

I agree with this 100. There's a chef I know of who always wants his food crispy and cruncy, and always says that a restaurant's food is not crispy enough for him, so he doesn't like it. But for me, who prefers less crisp in my food, I would enjoy it. It is only his preference that he's presenting, and is only valid for those with similar preferences.

In a fashion, Guy paved the way for these food influencers. But you'll notice that Guy never says anything bad about a place, even when he's served a dish that he clearly does not like (like Cheeseburger Fried Rice). He is 100% aware of the power he has to help or hinder a business, and I don't think he's ever chosen to do the latter. Guy may look like the worst kind of dudebro dad, but he's all right in my completely insignificant opinion.

I’ve been to a small handful of Diner’s/Drive-in’s/and Dives that were mid, but not bad. Most definitely gave him the best food their kitchen can put out, but after getting blown up on cable and internet couldn’t balance quality with the huge volume. In my younger years I actually worked at a local small town pizzeria that blew up after a buzzfeed top 10 pizza joint. We were already busy but after the article business went up like 30% for almost a year. People did overtime, people got tired, quality stayed the same, and loyal customers got an additional wait time that was periodically ridiculous. Had to turn our phones off at times to catch up because nobody wants to wait over 55min for a pizza and that was what we were backed up to. Pumping out 24 large(16”) pizzas every 11-12 minutes with 4 stone ovens. After moving from rural WA to NYC 6 years ago I can’t say I’ve had better pizza than Fazzari’s in Clarkston Washington. Go Coug’s!

That’s why I never look at one person’s review of a place. I went to look for a Boba tea place near me when I was in a city next to my hometown. If I had followed only one person’s 2.5 star review I wouldn’t have gone … Everyone else gave it four or five stars … That one woman complained about something completely irrelevant. I gave it two stars just because the staff wasn’t nice enough in her estimation, but they weren’t rude and they didn’t kick her out or anything that would require a bad rating for the restaurant. I went because I’m friendly everybody there was friendly and nice and the food was amazing and the Boba tea was awesome … it was also a small business and not a chain restaurant. So my question is , when you get one bad review, are you the problem because maybe you weren’t friendly and let a scowl on your face and it made them nervous? If there are a bunch of bad reviews for a restaurant complaining about the food and the staff. Then I take notice.

Dave would not approve because pepperoni would leave too much grease on the pizza and Dave hates a wet pizza. I like that. Dave also likes an almost burnt crust. He goes for "the crunch" but if my crust is too burnt, I don't like it. I know what Dave likes and his tastes are not my tastes. He would gag on my perfect pizza and I would never order a mere cheese pizza. As they said on Futurama, A cheese pizza is a pizza with "nothing good on it".

1 part of this sounds like natural selection spedup, and another part of it just sounds like a kitchen nightmares effect

Dave makes entertaining content and gives his opinion. He only has 1 million subscribers so he isn't destroying businesses. He really only helps places who deserve more recognition more popular. If someone likes a pizza place, they won't stop going there because Dave says he doesn't like it. He is kind of like a podcast in the world of mainstream media.

I just wanted to mention that Keith Lee does anonymous food reviews. He openly says he pays people to buy food for he and his family since he knows they are well known. He will also order it on door dash or order pick up under a different name and ask someone to go in and pick up the order for him. I don’t think it was fair to critique him on other point but not mention this.

Not only that. He never even proved the entire title of the video. Only that Dave should stay anonymous and probably eat there multiple times before scoring are the main ones. He in no way proved Dave is sinking pizza places.

I was a bit worried about the channel when MatPat haded over to Santi, but it looks like he's got it all in hand! Another great video Santi!

Dave is chill compared to Mr. Chimetime. You want to see someone destroy a "mid" restaurant then check him out. Lol

Surprised Santi didn't mention that Dave rated Blaze Pizza 0 just because Lebron James is or was a part owner.

Keith Lee effect is very real, my buddy has a restaurant here in las vegas and when keith lee did a review, his daily business blew up over 1,000%, he ran out of food every day before 2pm for a week straight. He never ran out of food before that ever. Crazy stuff

The vast majority of food critic influencers I’ve watched are ridiculously uninformed about food and cooking techniques. How can you trust them?
