Whenever he doesn't quite like a food he does say, that it doesn't represent the entirety of their food and that they couls have just had a bad day. If a restaurant goes under it's, as you say, due to the owner's or staff's actions. Like that one where the owner refused to share the huge tip that was specifically given to be shared. But of course it's more convenient to ignore that in this video Edit: just saw he mentioned the tip story. But still, it's not exactly Keith's fault. The owner kinda brought it upon herself by also reacting and replying the way she did.

@@megatronusorionpax4900Keith Lee is more here to talk about how the concept of food influencer is problematic instead of it being just on the influencer themselves. That said Keith is very much a best case scenario, and it’s a shame there really aren’t many other food influencers like him.

it goes both ways. Pros: they have experience making them "experts", it is just a matter of if they remain in the bounds of their expertise. Cons: they are incentivised to trash local competition for profit and use their platform to advertise themselves. Context matters, but i can agree with the sentiment in a context-less void. This is why I appreciate Mike Chen/Strictly Dumpling as a food reviewer. He is well aware of his influence, and makes it a point to not post negative reviews of small businesses, as the last thing he wants to do is ruin someone's livelihood to bolster his own. the only time you'll ever see him post a megative review is if the food is coming from a major chain, as his opinion isn't going to do any actual harm in that case. this is the sort of thing you'll often see if he's checking out stuff from Costco, trader Joe's, or a major restaurant/resort chain. Even then, I love that regardless of the palce he visits, he gets numerous things from the menu most times, to give a better idea of what htey serve and what's worth trying out. This is something I would love to see more food reviewers nowadays doing, as everyone involved wins.

As some who spent almost 15 years (2002-2015) rating and reviewing beers online. I learned taste is subjective, and people can have biases and prejudices towards a style of beer. One of the reasons why I stopped reviewing beers is because I found myself being more judgmental when reviewing beers. Just to keep it out of the 80th percentile. Professional beer reviews have subtle ways of saying they did not like a beer. They say they have a scale between 1-100. They never really give a beer a score below 75 or 80. So, the scale is really 75-100, or 1-25. A beer with a score of 81, actually has a 1 or a 6. The second reason why I stopped reviewing beers personally is I ran out of adjectives. Which is bigger than it sounds/reads.

I’ve been to a small handful of Diner’s/Drive-in’s/and Dives that were mid, but not bad. Most definitely gave him the best food their kitchen can put out, but after getting blown up on cable and internet couldn’t balance quality with the huge volume. In my younger years I actually worked at a local small town pizzeria that blew up after a buzzfeed top 10 pizza joint. We were already busy but after the article business went up like 30% for almost a year. People did overtime, people got tired, quality stayed the same, and loyal customers got an additional wait time that was periodically ridiculous. Had to turn our phones off at times to catch up because nobody wants to wait over 55min for a pizza and that was what we were backed up to. Pumping out 24 large(16”) pizzas every 11-12 minutes with 4 stone ovens. After moving from rural WA to NYC 6 years ago I can’t say I’ve had better pizza than Fazzari’s in Clarkston Washington. Go Coug’s!

That’s why I never look at one person’s review of a place. I went to look for a Boba tea place near me when I was in a city next to my hometown. If I had followed only one person’s 2.5 star review I wouldn’t have gone … Everyone else gave it four or five stars … That one woman complained about something completely irrelevant. I gave it two stars just because the staff wasn’t nice enough in her estimation, but they weren’t rude and they didn’t kick her out or anything that would require a bad rating for the restaurant. I went because I’m friendly everybody there was friendly and nice and the food was amazing and the Boba tea was awesome … it was also a small business and not a chain restaurant. So my question is , when you get one bad review, are you the problem because maybe you weren’t friendly and let a scowl on your face and it made them nervous? If there are a bunch of bad reviews for a restaurant complaining about the food and the staff. Then I take notice.

Food reviews can be informative and also entertaining, but is ultimately subjective. It can indicate a popularity trend but that's never always indicative of food quality, especially if it's from a franchise restaurant. During my travels abroad, I've come to enjoy food from regular functioning establishments more than food that has been hyped up by influencers. Sometimes being preempted to experience something really good ironically kills the experience altogether.

Dave Portnoy is an icon. I love his reviews and I know what he likes. But I also know what I like and I would NEVER order a cheese pizza. It's pepperoni pizza for my baseline. Dave would not approve because pepperoni would leave too much grease on the pizza and Dave hates a wet pizza. I like that. Dave also likes an almost burnt crust. He goes for "the crunch" but if my crust is too burnt, I don't like it. I know what Dave likes and his tastes are not my tastes. He would gag on my perfect pizza and I would never order a mere cheese pizza. As they said on Futurama, A cheese pizza is a pizza with "nothing good on it".
