Fred and Rosemary West did horrific things to twelve young women, including two of their daughters, in one of the most shocking cases of serial killing Britain has ever seen. But why did the Wests embark on their path of depravity? Were they born to kill, or did their mothers make them into monsters thanks to childhoods full of abuse?

Well of course… we’re responsible for birth control and for not making men want to have sex with us… it’s a woman’s fault entirely if she gets pregnant. It’s a woman’s fault if she’s abused… it’s always the woman’s fault. And I say that with complete and utter sarcasm… I’m a woman who has lived through abuse. I don’t believe their parents made them monsters… I think their upbringing (both parents) and the mental illnesses that were undiagnosed and untreated played a big part in why the Wests were so messed up. Tragic and grotesque don’t even really cover this story.

This is weirdly worded. An affair implies that both parties are consenting in it. A 15 year old cannot consent to that. And what's worst, it was her father. When I write my scripts for my true crime channel, especially when children are involved, I make sure to use language that doesn't imply the child was a factor in their own abuse.

Incest with a minor is NOT an affair. It is a sick criminal act.The fathers were just as culpable as the mothers. Also Rose’s mother endured the same “therapy” that was done because she was depressed so her brain was just as fried. Your video even said they used a much higher voltage back then. I’m seriously questioning where you got your “facts” and if these people are even remotely qualified to assess a monkey’s butt. How much of this was said and done to up the drama and therefore your ratings. Also plenty of people suffer an inordinate amount of abuse and don’t go on to murder so stop trying to minimize their actions by doing so. It takes personal responsibility and accountability out of the equation. They chose to be the sick deprived people that they were. It is an incredible disservice to those of us who survive and go on to value life and lead productive lives.

Broken by their mothers? Considering Rose was raped by her Father as a child and kept on having sex with him after she was grown. And Fred watched his Father rape women and animals, I'm guessing it wasn't just the mom. It's very strange to focus on one parent. Like very very strange. Saying an affair instead of pedophilia with a child is beyond weird. Whoever made this episode or wrote needs to be fired.

What is strange is in those days it was always the fault of the mothers. Daisy Letts was given shock therapy while her husband Bill got clean away with what he did. It just shows how domestic violence played out in those days and when children were abused they wouldn’t dare report it to the police because they would have been told they deserve it. The Mental Health system has a lot to answer for as well How many women did it abuse and treat as depressed when it was the husbands abuse that was the cause of it? Even not wanting sex with your husband was seen as somehow not a woman’s right. And we are meant to trust this industry now? Yeh right!

He lied to police about so many things it's hard to figure out what was truth. Marrying another deranged person obviously added fuel.

Apart from the obvious sexism in the approach to this documentary, I'm also seeing a few discrepancies. I've read elsewhere the 13-year-old girl Fred impregnated was not his sister but in fact a girl from the neighbourhood. Also, I've read that the murder of Charmaine was not something planned between the two of them, but something Rose did on her own whilst Fred was in prison. It's a little hard to take this whole video seriously as a result.

@@lolocaust4967lol what?? Did you even watch this video before commenting? Both of these fathers were present, married to and living with the mothers. They were both sexually/psychologically abusive to the point that (based on the information presented here) they turned their children into serial killers. Blaming the mothers for failing to prevent their husband's crimes is pure misogyny- especially since they were both abusive monsters in their own right- plenty of blame to go around. Also, correlation=/=causation. Most of the people in prison grew up poor. What effect do you suppose poverty has on marriage 💀
@Neutronia1
@Neutronia1 10 ай бұрын
It is always the mothers who are blamed in sensational documentaries or by the media. Both of these people's fathers were just as much to blame in helping to form them. However, thousands of kids have had similar upbringings and don't go on to become serial killers. There is plenty of research around about the genetics of psychopathy, anti-social personality disorder etc. Serial killers are a combinations of a multitude of issues, you can't blame their families in such a simplified way.

There is no proof that what Fred told the police about his parents even happened. He was a liar and a sociopath, so how could someone make a documentary based entirely on anything he said? The fact is, nobody really. knows what happened in his home, but we do know that he had a serious head injury that changed his behavior and that's the fact that most likely caused him to be the way he was.

It was not just the "Mothers". I see their "Dads" also in Charge. It is so common to blame everything on the mothers. But dads are as responsible. And in these two cases we have one dad introducing hin son into bestiality and rape, and on the other side a dad who is abusing his daughter. But in general,... there are many people coming from horrible families, who are not becoming serial killers. So it might help to explain what happened... but it is not an excuse.

This presentation lacked the evaluation of a psychiatrist. The medical education includes the anatomy and physiology of the brain. The profound ability of these individuals to ignore and transgress the boundaries and ignore social norms they were exposed to suggests a thorough examination of the additional risk and exposure in utero of substances. Alcohol exposure to the fetus especially in the first trimester has consistent evidence of the inability or lack of a conscious connection between actions and logical consequences. The development of neurological pathways and the effects on the function of neurons is blocked when substances are introduced in the stage of brain development in the first trimester of pregnancy. The electrocuting of the mother of Rose needs further medical research my a medically qualified psychiatric professional including the use of brain imaging tests could evaluate physical abnormalities.

The language used: “are their mothers ultimately responsible” No, murderers are solely responsible for the crimes they commit. Some people with horrendous backgrounds succeed, some people bought up in wealth and privilege descend into crime. Did the mothers contribute? Yes. But every single encounter and relationship leads us to who we are today. Fred and rose did it. Fred and rose are responsible.

Why do they always blame the mother? What about abusive, molester fathers? I know a woman whose brother is serving 40-50 years for raping his daughters and the twin boys next door. Before then, their father raped and molested them. Her mother knew it but did nothing about it. The woman has not become a pervert or criminal of any kind. She describes herself as asexual, just not very interested, but having many friends female and male. She doesn’t relate to the lgbtq+ community, either by gender identity, socially, or political causes. She dresses as a woman professionally, but prefers jeans, flannel shirts, and work boots for casual wear. Her hair is a chin length bob, attractive, easily cared for. She sometimes wears a little makeup for special occasions, otherwise not. She has triple pierced ears and an extensive collection of earrings of all styles. Outdoor activities with a few friends like skiing or hiking and arts like pottery and painting are her hobbies. She works in IT for an internet provider.

And the misogyny goes on. Some how it's the woman, it's the mother. Even though it's know that Rosemary was sexually abused by her father. But in the end it has to be the mother! It's misogynistic views that mean that the people who are killed are generally women. Rose was also a victim. Yes she was depraved and a psychopath, but also a victim. She had been manipulated by almost every man that she had come into contact with and had been the victim of a predator from a child by her father and the West when she was 15. But let's focus on her mum!!

Ok for all the people commenting that they dont understand why the focus on the mothers. Its a well established fact that most people with drug addiction, criminal behaviour, low income homes etc come predominantly from single mother households. I know its fashionable to trash men and fathers at every given opportunity and claim that women can play both roles with great success, statistically thats not true at all. Raising children in a single mother houehold puts children at every statistical disadvantage. This is a well known yet not very popular fact. To make it even more unpopular children that come from single father homes often do much better. You can say what you like and claim mysoginy etc but this is a fact.
@redmoon8217
@redmoon8217 10 ай бұрын
This is a well thought out, well researched response. Can you you please post links to research and evidence. No I don't think so because you are speaking a crock of shit. Most significant single parent families are families which consist of only a mother. Reason for this because women given that they are in the biological position of carrying a child and giving birth to them will take responsibility for the child. Single father's are more rare unless they are widowed. If one sex is going to abandon their responsibility for a child statistically what sex do you think that would be? What impact do you think that this has on a child's mental health.
