Citing factors such as his low-paying job, lack of foreseeable prospects, and modest living conditions, sources close to local resident Karl Brewster said Thursday they are at a loss to explain his day-to-day cheerfulness in the face of such a bleak existence.

"That is one of the great mistakes people make: assuming that someone who does menial work does not like thinking. Physical labor is great for the mind, as it leaves all kinds of time to consider the world. Other work, like accounting or scribing, demands little of the body-but siphons energy from the mind. If you wish to become a storyteller, here is a hint: sell your labor, but not your mind. Give me ten hours a day scrubbing a deck, and oh the stories I could imagine. Give me ten hours adding sums, and all you’ll have me imagining at the end is a warm bed and a thought-free evening." Brandon Sanderson, from Tress of the Emerald Sea. @@KangarooMonkey human state of mind can be twisted to accept whatever reality you choose to, happiness usually has a physical basis of course, but you can be taught to enjoy and believe anything, it can be a convincing narrative, a forced change of mind (trauma for example) or whatever. You have to develop a narrative to live your life but you also need to accomodate to other people's reality to be able to live in groups. It's a balance between realities, anything has a hidden set of narratives and you may be accepting some whithout even realising it. I find this pretty scary since problematic ideology is everywere and if you dont keep yourself in check you may fall in unjustified intolerance. You even could fall into it forcibly because of the context you live in, because we all want to be socially accepted in our most close group. Dont let paranoia consume you, get your happiness from unharmful things and call out those who dont.

@@sunorcio3901 i was in a cult for 18 years and while i was in it, performing tasks associated with the religion (eg. preaching, attending meetings, studying the bible etc) brought me great joy and fulfillment. 3 years ago when i realised it was all a lie my entire belief system collapsed I was so unsure about everything. I was a jehovah's witness and believed i would live forever on a paradise earth with my JW family and friends, I can still remember the moment I realised that me and my whole family was actually going to die and there was nothing I could do to prevent it. Since then I've had to recreate my narrative on what the true nature of reality is, I've switched from believing in creationism to evolution by natural selection, and from being convinced that there is a loving god to being pretty certain that there is none (idk for sure tho, noone does). Along with these revelations I've been forced to find what truly brings me fulfillment and joy in life, I'm still working that out but it's been a hell of a journey. I just find it interesting how in the span of about 2 years I went from believing that human civilisation is only 6000 years old and that armageddon is coming soon and will kill almost everyone who isn't a jehovah's witness, to realising that homo sapiens have been around for 10s of thousands of years and they we evolved from other primates, who somewhere along their lineage descended from fish, who in turn descended from a singular cell life form roughly 3.77bn years ago. This whole paradigm shift has shifted my appreciation for nature from being some sense of wonder that arose from acknowledging that all life was designed, to realising the real beauty is in the process of different species reproducing trillions of times, and the trial and error involved over billions of years via evolution leading to life on earth today.

Thoughts of suicide can be a comforting lifeboat. The storm of life can be overwhelming and we can feel like we don't have a compass, but the thought of having that ironic life boat can help us get through the day. Anti-depressants robbed me of 10 years of my life due to sever emotional blunting. I was semi content because I didn't have the emotional capacity to give a sh*t, even as I was letting everything fall apart. I think the answer is just to be yourself and not indulge in comparison. Life is much better than the alternative, I hope you feel happiness and enjoy your existence and we should all aspire to be like Karl.

Man, I can tell how genuine you are being. Can really relate to that robbing of time feeling, I wasn't on medication but I was mentally ill from around 13 until 19 ish, 20 now. Still not 100% there, but a lot more functional now. I don't wanna be condescending but I just wanted to share my experience regarding that feeling of lost time if that's ok since I've dwelled a lot on it previously. I won't lie that it still hurts from time to time, especially since it was a part of my childhood and I can't really live that life anymore. But I feel like what had to happen, happened you know? One sentiment that I found really comforting is that we all have our own unique stories and experiences. And while I'm sad about what happened, it's also MY story if that makes sense. And it's made me who I am right now, and I don't hate that person... a lot. Still need to work on the self love hahaha.@@kills26

Christopher Duran. Actually, the friend who asked me this got social media after I did and I just got it during the quarantine. The main reason students are stressed and seeing higher rates of depression due to stress in school and not their cell phones. But, considering how poorly schools and the media are dealing with and reporting on the issue, I can see where the confusion came from.

@@christopherduran5121 Social media is informing people about the state of the world. Social media isn't making people sad, the fires and natural disasters that are happening more and more frequently is. The massive pandemic outbreak and some people's refusal to take it seriously is. The minimum pay not keeping up with the cost of living is. The fact that human trafficking is still alive and well and likely backed by the powerful and rich is. The police killing and beating people who did not deserve it is. Learning the way our world works is depressing but it's also the only way we can even begin to fix things. If we get rid of social media it doesn't solve the real problems. We just won't know about them.

We don't get much insight into how Karl actually is. He could be very smart, wise, and live well. He could also be dumb as a brick, and just accepts everything around him because he can't understand it. Not to say either one is bad, but "ignorance is bliss" is a very true statement in the modern world. Just because someone is happy, does not mean they are wise. Though he would be a little wise to some degree to get over the fear of the unknown that like 99% of people never overcome

“There seems to be an inborn drive in all human beings not to live in a steady emotional state, which would suggest that such a state is not tolerable to most people. Why else would someone succumb to the attractions of romantic love more than once? Didn’t they learn their lesson the first time or the tenth time or the twentieth time? And it’s the same old lesson: everything in this life-I repeat, everything-is more trouble than it’s worth. And simply being alive is the basic trouble. This is something that is more recognized in Eastern societies than in the West. There’s a minor tradition in Greek philosophy that instructs us to seek a state of equanimity rather than one of ecstasy, but it never really caught on for obvious reasons. Buddhism advises its practitioners not to seek highs or lows but to follow a middle path to personal salvation from the painful cravings of the average sensual life, which is why it was pretty much reviled by the masses and mutated into forms more suited to human drives and desires. It seems evident that very few people can simply sit still. Children spin in circles until they collapse with dizziness.”― Thomas Ligotti

Karl spent 12 years in federal prison. During that time, he had abusive cellies, and one beat down over stolen cake ( he didn't do it ) He got through his drug withdrawals, started reading the Bible, and learned he had dyslexia, wasn't in fact stupid. With His improved reading skills, he got into philosophy. His parole officer was very lenient and made sure he went to therapy. For a time he relapsed and was homeless, but his P.O. helped him get a job and a place. Carl appreciates everyday in his apartment and the dogs that love him. He is glad to be drug free, out of jail, productive and that someone took,a chance on him. This is Carl's success story.
