The problem with eating until "full" is that it does not mean "not hungry". It is perfectly possible to eat until full while still being ravenously hungry, and that feeling is miserable. It has taken me decades to experience "fully satisfied" a few times. It was wonderful. I lost all interest in food, did not think of it and was totally "at peace"... for about 4 hours and then the hunger reappeared. The problem with it was that it took about 850 g of cheddar to achieve it. In other words: just about as bad as it gets. I have since then accepted that I will always be hungry and now focus on keeping hunger at tolerable levels. It has allowed me to lose over 60 kg, and I am keeping it off. The price is persistent but tolerable (if unpleasant) hunger. I eat between 2 and 3 kg of vegetables a day.

I like how Dr. Gardner handles the complexity of diet. There's a lot that is still not known that could be useful. I think that consuming less processed foods helps greatly and there is some science behind that, but it's a pretty general idea. However, I think in our society and the modern environment of lack of exercise and many super rich foods being available, whole food-plant based makes the most sense to aid in weight loss and maintenance. This applies to me and obviously a lot of people like keto for weight loss. They haven't done long term weight loss studies because they are very costly. I know what has worked for me so far and it's whole food-plant based. We have a big challenge as people in the modern food environment with huge amounts of processed foods and a very elaborate media network we use with messages trying to convince us to eat all of this food. We are up against powerful forces. It's good the doctor hasn't gone to the dark side and concoct ways to sell standard diet foods although he did put on his Darth Vader suit to work with Impossible Burger. I kid! I'd like to see studies of people who eat Impossible Burger as a transition food and if their long term health has benefited from such foods, which is an interesting hypothesis. Of course, with the idea that they eventually stop eating that burger and go to whole starch entrees similar to the whole food-plant based diet. I ate the burger once to test but I am WFPB so it was a very rare cheat meal. I think there are people who eat very small amounts of meat, dairy and eggs, and added oil enough to come close to a whole food-plant based diet, but it takes great restraint and I'd assume most cannot control and I certainly can't.

Well history has shown that eating whole food is the way to go, vegan or not. So I don't understand why ot is a "general idea". Processed food are very low in fibers, vitamins... and high in fructose. So how can this diet be good for health when you can't get enough of the essential nutrients with it. All the countries which consume a high processed food diet are on top of metabolic health issued. And when you look at countries which are not eating the western processed diet or not as much YET the result are there. I wish those Researchers will talk more or collaborate with other countries which are not affected by those issues yet because those countries/areas do exist especially is some areas of Asia and Africa even in some areas in Italy. Africa is the best example as subsaharian Africa in general barely eat processed food yet but South Africa Is the country that eat the most processed food, They also have the most obese, the most diabete and that is also the African country that was affected the most by COVID by far. Now loosing weight is more complicated but maintening a healthy weight and metabolism... We know how to do that already. Eat a diversed real food diet ! And of course for many other aspects of health and being fit moving the body and working out is very important...

@@HereDiianas Yes, processed foods are a big problem! Hopefully the world can retain at least some areas without impact of processed foods.

Gardner looks a bit like Richard Gere to me, and his voice actually sounds similar to someone famous as well. I have already listened to a few interviews with him. I'm not sure I'll listen to this whole interview. I like that for others he is relatively diet agnostic, whatever he does in his private life. I hope he gets his book written.

Great chap. I'd like to know why he's OK with eggs. Funny because Gil from Nutrition Made Simple has a great video on cholesterol with charts showing you just how unhealthy eggs are These plant based professional scientists contradict each other

Gil is plant-based? Gardner says when the scientists get together, there is a fair amount of overlap, but he doesn't say it's on the animal vs. plant extremes. Humans are subject to bias, including yours truly and everyone involved here. It is the nature of the subjective temperament- which is most scientists- to cultivate a particular point of view and share it, despite that it often involves dismissing unsupportive evidence and propping what is basically the insecurities of the ego (its need for certainty that doesn't actually exist). But that is true to some extent of all temperaments. Gardner may be on the cusp as he seems to stay rather light-hearted in his presentation. No matter how hard we try, we are all basically "feeling" only one part of the elephant. The cosmos is incredibly more complex and accepting of paradox than any of its constituents are likely to ever completely comprehend.

29:36 then don't do the study! If you are an authority in a clinical setting and you keep telling people how hard it is to do something, you will get s self-fulfilled prophecy every time! How about do the agenda stop confusing people, and let reality speak for itself.
