Today we continue our look at the Blood Angels, with a discussion involving one of their most famous successors... The Flesh Tearers! As we discuss, their Chapter Master Gabriel Seth, and his grudge against Astorath!

i love the contrast of astorath's sadness, kindness and patience when taking care of his brothers lost to the rage, and him not taking shit from seth and just looking down on him for thinking he can tell astorath what he can and cant do.

@@Dreadbringer ye, but astorath doesnt really work within the confines of chapter and rank, his task goes beyond such things, seth can not order astorath to stop killing blood angels who are lost, he can say he will do it himself, but if astorath doesnt agree with that seth cant do anything to stop him, other than attacking him. the only one astorath would listen to is dante if given an order, and that is because he is dante. i could be wrong, been awhile since i read anything warhammer, but astorath doesnt operate as normal marines do, he has his own unique task. so master of his chapter or not, seth cannot order astorath to do or stop doing anything.

@@Dreadbringer Flesh Tearers are a Blood Angels successor, and therefoe Blood Angels. Astorath's duty is carried out for all chapters that suffer the Black Rage, and all chapters that suffer the Black Rage are Blood Angels.

@@Dreadbringer no seth cannot order astorath to stop, astorath kinda stands above chapters, not in the sense that he can just order them around, but that he can do his job without anyone, other than dante, ordering him to stop. and if needed be allowed to remove anyone and anything that stands in his way in any manner he deems necessary. so if seth really prevents astorath from performing his duty, he could take seth out if he wanted to, not that i think he well go so far as to kill seth, unless seth is truly lost, but he might give him a new haircut with his axe.

Without spoiling anything, this event helps Astorath realise that Seth is ultimately fighting for the preservation of The Blood tooth, nail, and claw. Which many others of The Blood don't recognize

@@Dreadbringer you keep banging on about a chain of command but Astorath and his ship aren't listed with the rest of the Blood Angels, move through the warp faster than any other imperial ship because of his duty/resolve/conviction; and he has music, not a map, to guide him through the warp on the dark side of the galaxy where the emperors light does not shine. Astorath is not taking orders but being guided by warp shenaningans. And we all know Sanguinius and the Emperor are still alive in the warp so I wouldn't put it past them helping out. Astorath is not a normal chaplain and shouldn't be judged by normal means i.e Seth being a chapter master. Seth is just butt hurt because the Flesh Tearers and Seth in paticular embrace the black rage more than most at the cost of innocent allies and civilians. Now I'm not saying you can't defend Seth or be his fanboy but the chain of command seems a moot point considering how Astorath goes about doing his thang. It's not like Guilliman is ordering him to do it.

like you said, if Astorath still hears the music, then he still serves a purpose, regardless of how Seth may feel about it. it would be interesting though, to see if this started a movement to each successor chapter creating their own dealer of the damned, taught exclusively by Astorath, to devote themselves so fully, they themselves begin to hear the music. Even better, out of the blue, Seth begins to hear the music

There is a stand alone book called "Trial By Blood" as a stand alone book as well. However, I swear I listened to this as an audio drama, but I cannot find it ATM.

@@sanguine2956 this is the duty givens to a son of Sanguineous to give mercy to his brothers. The music itself is in my eyes more of warp entity Sanguineous (the thing in the warp that talks to Mephiston) so it’s basically a duty given by the primarch.

I think this is perfectly fitting for the Seth and by proxy the Flesh Tearers. The Tearers have never cared about the Legion Wardens when they felt they were right, and now that the Wardens have become Chaplains, I can see that the thought hasn't changed. Besides, Seth isn't saying that they won't be killed, but that he should be the one to decide their fate. Unlike Astorath, a jumped up Blood Angel who, while he may be directed by Papa Angel, is not a member of that chapter. Seth calling him Cousin, I feel is the most telling of that. To Seth they aren't Brothers, family still, but Astorath is overstepping.

I know him(seth)and Dante have a good relationship/understanding..... and at all but I don’t see Dante talk to him down not from this not at all. After learning about the amount of pain endured by Angels fallen to the Black Rage and hearing one plead with Astorath to end his suffering, I really can't side with Seth, regardless of how much I sympathize and respect him. Once the Rage has taken hold, it is only the rarest of Angels who come out alive, much less sane. Ending their suffering, and thus reducing the amount of pain and rage echoing into the Warp, is by far the better option. Imagine how much rage and pain has been denied to the Ruinous Powers by the mercy of Astorath, to say nothing of the souls redeemed. The High Chaplain has among the worst jobs imaginable for a Space Marine, but few can say they've done as much for the wellbeing of the Imperium and for the Sons of Sanguinius as him.

@Pedro Kantor, the Crimson power Fister Oh absolutely get it, totally sympathetic to Chapter Master Gabriel. But with all due respect, Chapter Master Kantor (huge fan, btw), if my son was a danger to himself and others, and suffering so greatly he pleads for death, I'd be grateful in a sick, sad way to have someone come to end his suffering with compassion. Seth being Seth, though, he'd want to do it himself, which is totally fair. But even then, he doesn't hear the music or the call of the Rage in others so he can't head to them quickly the way the Chaplain can, and he has too many other duties to bear right now as Chapter Master. Astaroth, however cold he seems, seemingly serves as the hand of Sanguinius in the mortal realm, offering mercy to his sons suffering through his own last moments of pain and confusion by leading the High Chaplain to them. And as a Golden Hawk-boi fanboy, that's enough sign for me to trust Asty and his purpose almost unconditionally, even without considering the other stuff I mentioned before.

The Flesh Tearers don't kill their surviving Death Company - they're retrieved, sent back to the ship they're kept on, their wounds are treated, and they're sent out again and again until killed in battle. We sort of get a follow-up to this story. Astorath speaks in Seth's favour in The Trial of Gabriel Seth (though he does call him a mongrel!) saying that the Chapters of the Blood need him and the Flesh Tearers. Also, I wish that Andy Smillie and Guy Haley would decide between them once and for all, how big Seth is. Smillie has him much smaller than Astorath and a head shorter than his new Primaris Captain (that he welcomed in his customary manner!), but Guy Haley calls him an 'immense' man and at least a head taller than other (First-Born) marines - in other words about the size of a Primaris, or as near as damn it.

Something that should really be pointed out before siding with Astorath, the Flesh Tearers actually get along pretty well with their Death Company, possibly because the difference between the normal Flesh Tearer and one affected by the Black Rage isn't quite as large as it is for other Chapters. The Death Company has their own Strike Cruiser (Death's Cowl) and the Flesh Tearers don't cull survivors but the Chaplains round them up so they can be used again and again until they finally meet an end in battle. Or turn them into a Death Company Dreadnought if they're not QUITE dead. We've seen a Flesh Tearer Chaplain order Death Company around and get them to literally fall into line, reason with a Death Company dreadnought (sorta... ). So all that makes Astorath coming by and chopping them up a bit... annoying.

I cannot see it being Astoraths place, as you say they are not a Legion anymore, they are a separate entity, cousins at most. Seth has pulled the Flesh Tearers from the brink of annihilation, he has literally fought tooth and nail to drag the chapter back from the dark, he barely has any brothers left and now this high minded member of another chapter comes and kills one of the last brothers he has that his has tried so desperately to save? Seth is more than justified in his anger. Also we have seen Astoraths level patients when dealing with one of his own chapter, then talks to Seth like he's a dog? He clearly has no respect for what is at the least a superior officer of another chapter, and clearly sees them as the rest of the Imperium sees them. Unlike his very own chapter master Dante, who clearly sees something in Seth worth redeeming. Astorath need to look to his own house before waving his authority among his cousin chapters.

And Seth it treading heresy grounds here, which may seem right but the angels carry chaos curses through their gene seed and this are not boons nor traditions to be kept. Even Sanguinius dealt death to all afflicted with the Red Thirst, what makes you think he wouldn’t do the same to those with Black Rage?

When you lead men into battle you feel responsible for them. After awhile they end up your family so you feel it is your duty to take care of them even if that means you must put them down yourself so I understand where Seth is coming from, but I would agree with Grim he was chosen for this position

The Flesh Tearers don't give the surviving Death Company the Emperor's Peace. They patch them up and put them back on the ship that they 'live' on. They are sent out in battle again and again until they're killed. They're on the edge - they need the honour of death in battle to save their souls.

Astorath can be calm and compassionate while he performs his duty, but no surprise he will be enraged if someone question or, even worse, wants to prevent him to fulfill it.

Oh, Seth does quite a bit better than just questioning his duty to anger Astorath. Remember the man is utterly gifted at being a dick to get his point across. Here's the passage that makes Astorath lose his cool: --- Seth gestured around them. ‘For all of the theatre you use to hide your true nature, you are still a Blood Angel. And we are all lost, cousin. None amongst the bloodline are above the madness. Not even you.’ Astorath bared his fangs. ‘I have walked with the damned-’ ‘No!’ Seth roared, closing to within a blade’s thickness of Astorath. ‘You have not walked with them. You have stood above them, sneering down at them in arrogant indifference.’ Astorath’s composure slipped as a ripple of rage ran across his features. ‘I am untouched by the Blood’s madness.’ ‘You think so, Blood Angel?’ Seth grinned. ‘You think it is sane to kill those of your own blood?’

During the days of the Crusade, whether in battle or in the sparring pits, even the World Eaters were described as being shocked by how much more violent and brutal the Blood Angels were than any other bloodline when pushed over the edge. Likewise Sanguinius knew he would have to cross that same line to defeat Horus and felt that line was a flaw and thus resisted.

Gabriel Seth is one of my top 3 favourite characters from 40k that is not from SW chapter (number 1 beingg Dante btw). He also shares same idea about Primaris as I do, and quite a lot of players :)

What I know some successor chapters (at least Templars of Blood) have their way how to avoid Astaroth's help. But it means let kill in battle or kill everyone with very first symptoms of black rage and I am not sure this is something what Seth wish for.

I think what Gabriel takes issue is that in all certain terms it is his chapter the one that he drug out of the blood soaked pit it was in and he who was also nearly assassinated by the inquisition is building up the Flesh Tearers. Chaplain Apollos is the his redeemer and leads the death company to the glorious ends that Seth would rather see than executions.

I personally side with Seth as it's his chapter to lead and to deal with chapter issues as he see fit and as is the right of a chapter master which I'm pretty sure out ranks a high Chaplin (I could be wrong) but even so he isn't of the chapter. Also a threat from seth should never be took likely or called out as the history of the flesh tearers shows they stick by there words as shown in fear to tread where Amit call horus a traitor and even with the threat of death from the angel himself would not take those words bk. There are always should be a check and balance, regardless of one's duty. For Seth, they flesh tearers are his sons. He would gladly sacrifice himself to protect them; he went to Astoroth to prove that. Who watches the Watcher? Or who is able to verify or assist the high chaplain? It is a question, and a concern that is justified by the chapter master (and the one stubborn and courageous enough to stand up and say something).

The codex Astartes is but scribbles and scraps of paper compared to the blood and rage that binds the sons of Sanguinius together. With the exception of the dark angels no other sons of Primarch keep such a close relationship between its successor chapters to its parent legion than the blood angles. The culture and shared grief and rage that developed around Sanguinius death and the genetic flaw that sparked from him is shared all sons of the blood and therefore they commit be easily separated regardless of what is said in Guilliman’s codex blood is thicker than paper.

Wouldnt an attack upon a fellow chapter be an act of treason against the emperor? Astorath was right to question if Seth had gone mad. At the same tie considering Seth brought his chapter back from the brink of oblivion, and what a monumental effort that must have been, I cant quite blame Seth for making that threat. I fully believe he will carry through with it, if he feels he must. Though imagine what that could mean for the chapter, excommunication, no safe harbor in the imperirum...an inevitable fall to chaos with no options left.

After reading over my blood angels codex (9th ed.) I noticed something. There is a passage that states that only the testimony of Astorath during the flesh tearers trial on Baal saved the chapter from dissolution. The man is literally the only one responsible for the Flesh Tearers continued existence as a chapter and this is how they treat him? Seth is no angel of mine.

I understand where Seth is coming from. when you fight beside someone for hundreds of years You form a bond with your brothers and to see them get killed off by your own kin after all the hardship and suffering you saw them go through just seems like a insult to their memory. Better to die by the enemy I say. Seth has seen way too many of his brothers die from astorath imagine seeing your closest friends get killed by the same person you would think to hate that person and that hate would certainly build up over time. This shows me how much Seth loves his brothers coz I can see how much he hates astorath.
