I recently played Return of the Joker for the first time myself was really impressed. I did get a kick out the fact that Batman just uses guns all the time. But Sunsoft never really cared about Batman's "no killing" side with the way he just tosses the Joker off the cathedral in the first game.

Was trying to think of a few random titles that seemingly pushed the respective system it was on to it's absolute limits, let's see..... Half Life 2 (XBOX) Conker's Bad Fur Day (N64) Shenmue (Dreamcast) Yoshi's Island (SNES) Metal Gear Solid (PS1) Mr. Gimmick (NES) Perfect Dark (N64) F-Zero GX (Gamecube) Tekken 3 (PS1) Soul Calibur (Dreamcast)

Add to that RE4 for the Gamecube, it was still the best looking version up until the Wii version and the HD Rereleases, I don't know if Wave Race 64 would count but it is on record that, that game used 90% of the N64s power and it was a launch title. Moreover Wave Race 64 keeps a steady frame rate, its not 60 but i don't remember much slowdown on it. Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay and Doom 3 for the original Xbox, Also I am not sure about it from a technical stand point but Silent Hill 3 for the PS2 looked great with all of its lighting, textures, and the in engine cut scenes looking really good.

There's actually a reason they skipped SFA on the SNES. SFA was essentially an unfinished game that was released due to deadlines. SFA2 isn't so much a sequel, but a replacement for SFA.

ryzmaker11 You are left with only games that are a megabit or less. Mappers are a custom chip, and any game larger than a megabit requires one; Basically you are left with the very early released titles such as Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr, Bubble Bobble, Mario Bros., Super Mario Brothers, etc. Even the original Zelda uses an MMC1 chip; Super Mario Brothers 2 and 3 use an MMC3 chip, etc. Any game that has save capability also uses a custom chip. Every Megaman NES title uses a add-on chip. It is worth noting that add-on chips do not really escape the limits of the console- the console is still responsible for all the graphics and sound, add-on chips are used to circumvent limitations of the console such as ROM address size, RAM size, as well as processor speed, but it is still limited by things such as PPU speed.
@BCProgramming
@BCProgramming 10 жыл бұрын
ryzmaker11 Yes the NES has those as well. But it would be disingenous, I think, to arbitrarily only include custom chips that do things like that, but not the Mapper chips, since those are also added hardware. It is also worth note that the hardware for the NES and SNES was effectively designed for the use of those enhancement chips; in the SNES case the original hardware has two extra tabs for the cartridge slot that are exclusively for use with additional processors on the chip. IMO because of that I don't think add-on chips really "circumvent" the hardware limits because the hardware was in fact designed for the ability for that expansion. Essentially add-on chips on SNES and NES cartridges are like video or sound cards in a PC; when we say we are pushing out PC nobody jumps out and says "well not really because you have a GTX 770! that's not your PC hardware!" if that makes any sense. After all, when we talk of "pushing the hardware"- the cartridge is hardware, too!

Ranger-X on the Genesis, a game no one seems to know about, yet has a lot going for it. Great animation, crazy music, lots going on and keeps the framerate high. Phantasy Star IV, not many RPGs had animated enemies but PSIV managed it with every one of them, idle or attacking, along with characters that weren't shrunk to chibi sizes. Also, story told in a comic-book cutscene kinda way. Flashback for the Genesis, it manages to have 'video cutscenes' and really well done rotoscope animation in game with a variety of challenges and really fun platforming. The Genesis, DOS, Amiga versions are the only versions worth playing as they keep the stylized cutscenes vs prerendered ugly early 3D and the SNES version is bogged down by slowdown, censored and is missing music Sonic 3 & Knuckles split into 2 carts because of size (time limitations too) but it expanded it's abilites outside locking with the game it was designed to link with, adding Knuckles into Sonic 2 as well. Not to mention adding in new levels, a character, more special and bonus stages, unique levels or bosses for characters, just a really amazingly done game that told a simple story, well with no text or aggravating voices like many of the 3D ones. God of War, crazy impressive on every platform the games have been on, with wild effects, lots of enemies yet the game stays smooth and pours on the difficulty. 3 was particularly mind blowing with the graphical detail enhancing the art style...also it was using a special bit of software that managed to fake antialiasing making it look more smooth. Burnout 2- on. So fast...smooth frame rate and so much crap exploding at once.

Burnout Paradise on the PS3 and (I think) XBox 360: persistent open world, high-quality models, lots of high-quality music, great crash physics, and I haven't really seen stuttering. The only time it loads in-world is to start a race. Often, I'll crash into a wall countless times just to see how crazy I can make the crash. And they also added a party mode with custom maps and challenges that take advantage of the complex physics.

Gran Turismo 4 for the PS2 - one of only 4 games on the PS2 that supported 1080. Really impressive given that the the system was not designed to do HD, and I think there is actually a button combination, followed by a system reset, that you have to do to get the game into HD, but once you do, this game is beautiful. If I remember right, this game was released in response to XBox releasing a few 720p titles, and saying that Playstaion could not do HD, so this was Sony's solution, to go 1080.

Many people had this same nitpick. When I looked them up they were listed as X, A and V isms and I was seeing X, Z and V in the game. This helped add to the confusion. Why they changed the name from Zero to Alpha I'll never know but Capcom works in mysterious ways. I wish they would have just called them Zero 1, Zero 2 or SSFT. That would have been clear as day. But as I said I'm not the world's most hardcore Street Fighter player. :)

Something I find interesting is all these games are for older systems. I can really wrap my mind around what these older systems can do but with newer ones there is a lot of grey area. Shadow of the Colossus had a ton of slowdown problems, but Recca looks like it has flickering problems just as bad as Shadow's slowdown, yet Recca is more impressive to me just because I think know what the NES can do and it proves me wrong. I don't have such a good idea of what the PS2/3/4 can do so when something does push it, it sorta falls flat and the negatives are more noticeable. Also I miss the custom chip era of gaming. It wouldn't be practical to make cartridges with them now, but damn it was neat to pop in a new game and feel like you were playing a new video game system because in a way you sorta were.

@GameSack

Izzy Games I try not to let temporal artifacts creep into the show. For example if a character gets hit and takes damage he'll flicker in the game. On many other gaming channels the character will just disappear altogether while it is flickering. On Game Sack we make the character transparent during this period so you can still see him. If the information is there, you'll see it. If it isn't you won't. Recca flickers because the NES is not really a champion at sprite handling. The flickering isn't minimal enough to simply be changed to transparent.

The NES supported playback of WAV sound files through a dedicated channel on its own hardware, but WAV files took up a ludicrous amount of space on an NES cart, so they are usually really compressed and low-quality. For the voice samples in that Count game to be so high-quality, every other aspect of the game must have been highly optimized to allow so much headroom. (Probably also helps that they pause the game every time a voice clip is played, if you pay attention). The only NES game I can think of that comes close to using WAV sampling that well is Mr. Gimmick, which samples every note on a bass guitar, and plays them back in sequence for SNES-quality music.

Orange Harrison in fact, every Nintendo console before the DS and GameCube had an analog audio input from the cartridge, so games could include their own sound chip. Unfortunately this was almost never used, except on the Famicom, and then some genius left that feature out of the NES. (It has an input from the expansion connector but not the cartridge. You can wire them together to get the extra sounds from Famicom games.) Bonus fact: the NES and SNES graphic chips also had an extra input that could have been used by custom chips to provide another background layer. But they didn't connect those inputs at all, just hardwired them to black. Can only imagine what could have been done if games had been able to use that feature...

Zero Tolerance on Mega Drive really pushes what the Mega Drive is capable of. I mean it's a first person shooter on the Mega Drive. While it is really slow and sluggish to play, it is very impressive what they managed to do with limited hardware of the time and it even has support for multiplayer via link cable. Star Fox on SNES is also incredibly impressive for a SNES game considering the SNES was never designed to do 3D polygon games. Also helps the game is just fun to play too.

Any episode with Street Fighter Alpha/Zero games featured in it is a total winner IMO. I've seen a lot of the SNES version of Alpha 2 in my travels but never owned it. The Saturn version of Zero 3 is really impressive; that smooth animation really shows. (Although, to be honest, the PlayStation port of Alpha 3 did hold its own considering how rough the earlier Alpha games ran on the platform). I really liked this episode because of its nature. Seeing games that really push hardware like this impresses me AND I learn about some games I never knew of before. To be honest, that's one of the major reasons that I've become a fan-- despite all of my years of playing games and all of the knowledge I've picked up over those years, your videos always introduce me to more stuff. I'm surprised the PC Engine wasn't featured at all in this episode. They squeezed a lot out of that system. There's always next time. Street Fighter Alpha for SNES sounds pretty bad, at least in the video. I'm not a fan of SNES sound in the first place and it sounds terribly muffled and distant here. Reminds me of Super Street Fighter 2 for Genesis and how they made the music worse and made all the sound samples extra scratchy. SFA 3 looks really good, especially right after seeing the SNES version. Fun episode as always. Thank you.
@Tempora158
@Tempora158 10 жыл бұрын
ravagingwolverine The SNES could only load 64KB worth of sound and program data at once into the Audio Processing Unit and SFA2 uses far more sound samples than SSF2. This is why the sound quality is so low (and a larger cart size would not have solved that problem) and the game has to stop to load and unload the announcer's voice samples. The Genesis SSF2 music sounds bad because Capcom took the entirely sample-based QSound music of the CPS2 arcade game and tried to recreate it with only FM synthesis. The sound samples are scratchy because the Genesis only has one PCM channel and Capcom's custom sound driver that mixes multiple sound samples into one channel is CPU intensive, thus the sample quality had to lowered. The alternative would have been to keep the quality high and play back one sample at a time, but that will cause every sound to interrupt each other, so every match will sound like, "Sonic Bo- Shouryu- *crunch*".

David White I just got into PC Engine this year actually, so I'm not as familiar with it as some others. The most obvious pick for me for a game pushing the limits of the system would be Street Fighter 2: Champion Edition. The PC Engine port stands up well against the SNES and Genesis versions with only minor compromises, the biggest of which I'd say is the music. It's even the only HuCard above eight megabits(20 MEGA POWER!). In addition to that, from what I've seen and played, shooters like Syd Mead's Terraforming, Gate of Thunder and Lords/Winds of Thunder look like they're pushing the system with lots of objects on screen, gigantic bosses and plenty of multi-scrolling backgrounds which the system was not designed to do easily.

Tempora158 Thanks for that informative and enjoyable reply. I like learning about the technical aspects and I was planning to read up soon on the SNES sound limitations as I heard about it before. Looking back, I believe it was too soon for a mainstream home system with completely sample-based sound as the SNES sound hasn't aged that well to me. The system did sell very well, though, so they did something right with it for the time. I've read up a lot on the Genesis this year and I'm aware of the aspects you brought up. Just a few days ago, I sent an email to my friend in which I talked about how I think it was a mistake to try to recreate the CPS2's sample-based Q-sound music with the Genesis FM chip. I would have preferred it if they reused the music from the previous game, or used that as a base for a slight updating. I recall the sample quality seeming much worse in SSF2 than in SCE which I thought was fine. Having played the PC Engine version of SF2 which does cut samples off like you described, I can say that it wouldn't have bothered me, but I can't speak for everyone.
@Tempora158

ravagingwolverine Nintendo couldn't predict the ton of voice samples that post-Street Fighter II games were going to use in the '90s, because they could have pulled a Microsoft and opted for more RAM for the audio unit. Don't know why they couldn't have added a custom audio chip right on the cart itself to extend the audio specs like what was done for Famicom games. If you want to hear a FM synth based version of SSF2's soundtrack done with a better synthesizer, look up the Sharp X68000 version of it on KZbin or play it yourself on the XM6 emulator. As for the samples in Genesis SSF2, I think the higher quality source and the preservation of the reverb had a negative impact when Capcom sampled it down to SCE quality. The drop off in quality was just too steep to not be noticeable. The samples in the the arcade Street Fighter II' CE weren't high quality to begin with, so the downgraded quality wasn't as drastic when they were sampled down for the Genesis.

I'd say the engine's in the back, but technically because it's right behind your head and before the trunk, it's called mid-engine lol. I like that you used the first model, bad ass little car, but since I own the second model, like I said I'm biased. Come the beginning of next year I'm getting the 3rd gen engine put in so it'll be the equivalent of the GT-S model in the game, so I'll no longer have to pretend that I have the fast model haha. Then when I come out to live in Colorado I'll basically have a new car. But yeah, long story short, engine's in the back.

One of my all time favorite games, one of the best, if not THE best shoot-em-up on the Genesis, and Technosoft really pushed the Genesis hardware pretty hard. Yes, it has slowdown in spots, but for 1992 it was super impressive.

So which one of you guys was smart enough to buy Shantae? I'm guessing it was Dave. You guys reach a much wider audience than I do with my measly 4k subscribers, so I'm really glad to see you spreading the love of Shantae around. My personal history with Shantae stems from my love of the GameBoy Color (which in turn is based on my love of the NES/Famicom), and my total admiration with WayForward for their early licensed work on the GBC that totally set the ground work for Shantae, like Sabrina the animated series and Xtreme Sports. So even before Shantae came out I was already in the know since I was subscribed to Wayforward's newsletters. They talked about how it was going to be the most amazing look game on the GBC, and how its gameplay was going to be like Metroid meets Zelda, and I was hooked even before I saw the box, as if my 13 year old self needed another reason to buy it other than the fact that it had a girl in a red bikini on the cover. I remember buying it, and liking it more than pretty much anything for quite some time. It was better than anything on GBA, better than consoles, better than PC. Shantae was simply incredible. I was aware it was a limited release because of coming at the tail end of the GBC but it was still a title I recommended to my friends, one of whom also bought a copy when they still could be found on retail shelves. Shantae is boss. Also, don't worry about not being able to attack in animal forms. You'll eventually find items that let you do just that.

WARNING! -- WALL OF TEXT -- WARNING! -- WALL OF TEXT -- WARNING! -- WALL OF TEXT -- I usually like your stuff (if you read my comments you know I'm a long time follower) but this time around I _loved_ it. I think that these limit pushers are the kind of games that deserves every bit of attention they can get. You've been over a lot of my favorites in this video (basically everything minus Street Fighter). I always thought very highly of Light Crusader. The environments look great, the music is wonderful and the action-adventure-rpg-puzzle hybrid gameplay is excellent. Given it's (the lesser known) Treasure game, you know what to expect from the bosses. If you consider enhancement chips to be fair game, where is Virtua Racing for the Genesis? Thunder Force IV is definitely one that pushes the envelope. So do both Vectorman and Ranger X. If you liked OutRun as much as I did, _play OutRun 2_. It'll make your eyeballs jump out of their sockets. That has _got_ to be a limit pusher, too. P.S: Thanks for bringing to my attention all the little tricks that Mega Turrican does, Joe. Great ep. Some of my favorites here. Alien Soldier is a beast of a game and SFA2 is a truly stunning SNES fighter. It'd be nice to see games like Black and Demon Chaos on the ps2 in the future as they use very clever graphical 'cheats' to make them appear to go beyond the tech specs of the system. Seeing how everybody seems to be bitching about the enhancement chips, how about an ep dedicated to some of the various chips such as the Super FX 1&2 and the Sega Virtua Processor? We know how Joe likes to flex his tech muscles and it'd be a good way to shoot this damn albatross down! HAIL GAME SACK !!!

@Game Sack Very cool video guys, as I rarely venture outside of old PC's these days I didn't knew most of this. I just can't believe that the Genesis can run Gradius 3 that slow and Redzone surely needs blast processing to make this walk animation so spastic! 2:09 *However*, should games that use a custom chip in the cartridge (such as Batman) really qualify ? It isn't really pushing the limitations in my eyes. I see it as like having a old, slow Pentium PO that runs quake 2 at 9 fps and then you add a 3d graphics card and now it plays at 60 fps, 'pushing the limits' in another way for sure. The limits are way higher now. Also, has Joe played the first two Turrican games ? (asking because Joe said that not aiming up hurts the series) In those games if you hold down the fire button (Amiga version at least) you will shoot a big continuous lazer and you can aim in 360 degrees ! But I suppose he haven't since one of the 'sackers' doesn't like the hard panned audio of Amiga's. Having one I say its really isn't a problem but if you space the speakers far apart then I suppose you have to get creative and split the L/R audio in two and use the remaining L/R for a speaker in the middle for a 2.1 speaker set up. I mean you'll do anything for the X68000! :) I'm starting to sound like a negative snot but I'm not, really like the show so please don't eat me GS fans.

Strange that you mentioned it in the NES batman game, but imo the game Mr.Gimmick should have been there instead of Batman Return of the Joker.. now that game truly pushes the NES capabilities in all departments, great graphics, very pretty to look at and rich/colorful. then how the game seems to have a physics engine such as the way you can bounce around on your starshot and it being dependent on speed and how you throw it, the way Gimmick falls off curved edges, etc. Then there's how the enemies have advanced AI for the NES, how some dodge your attacks, bait you into vulnerable positions, and such. and Finally there's the awesome music, which uses Sunsoft extra music chip, is far superior that any previous Sunsoft title, and probably the greatest 8-bit music ever created.

I checked out Shantae and the other games in that series after seeing this video. Absolutely amazing Metroidvania platformers. Personally, I found Pirate's Curse to be my favorite (Probably up there with Aria of Sorrow as one of my favorite Metroidvanias in general.), but all three are beautifully crafted games in their own right. (Just, um, don't make the same mistake I did in Risky's Revenge and not realize that the Battle Tower had those time extensions you could collect in the pots between rooms. Took me ages to realize those were there, and I assumed I just wasn't moving fast enough or that the place was really badly designed. Got me kinda mad at the game for a rather silly reason for a little while.)

I know this channel is devoted more toward older systems but if we're just gonna talk games in general then holy shit some of the stuff that came out toward the end of the PS2's lifespan was bloody fantastic. Of course there's a lot of debate as to when that consoles time really ended but regardless for the sake of argument let's say 2006 which was when we saw a definite decrease in released titles until they just stopped completely around 2007, even though we were well into the next generation by then. Regardless it was clear with some of the big titles that hit towards the very end that certain developers had gotten incredibly comfortable with that system. I'm not going to try and list them all as I'm sure I'll forget one, or bring something up that'll get me into a flame war I really don't wanna be in. But the short version is there were a handful of games toward the end of the PS2's lifespan that looked more like early PS3 games, it was amazing (and I'm no fanboy, I have all the consoles from that generation, but it's definitely the console devs seemed to learn to push the furthest from that gen).

Dwight southwell Usually the "end" of a consoles "lifespan" isn't marked by the last game that was made for it, but by when the vast majority of developers made a departure from it. Technique San donkey kong country was designed specifically so it wouldnt push the snes. everything is pre-rendered and compressed to shit so that it would look higher quality without actually using more processing power or doing anything particularly complicated. the hardest part was doing the 3d animations to begin with to capture the still frames, which was not an easy feat with the animation technology of the time.

"Boring simulation style racing".. When referring to GT2... Ha ha! I'm so completely the opposite.. I find arcade racers boring, they're just too easy.. You simply hold down the "gas" button and mash left or right. Occasionally tapping the "brake" button to initiate a drift which holds itself.. It's basically the racing equivalent of a mindless button masher.. With a simulation, there's nuance.. Skills to learn, techniques to exploit.. So many different ways to attack any said corner, it adds tremendous depth.. And when you finally pull off the perfect turn or drift, or learn a track and lay down a really fast hot-lap. It delivers a thrill and sense of accomplishment that no instant gratification arcade racer could ever match!! I'm a car guy though, so I guess you've got to be more passionate about it to appreciate the nuance like that! : ).

yo game sack do you think the game world is heading in the opposite direction? i mean dont get me wrong, people push hardware still nowadays but i feel like they just want to take the easy way out and say "just buy new hardware scrub your shit is old". kinda silly if you ask me but hell i still play diablo 2 and the genesis/NES. lol jousting on an emu

What about GTA: San Andreas? Sure, the graphics were average for their time, but the sheer size of the game world was impressive, and the best part? It didn't even have to load, save for some interiors. To this day, very few games can compete with the raw size of the game world.

You guys are getting some mean comments, I'm sorry about that as you guys seem like good people and run a great series. Anyways, Space Harrier II would be good in the next version of this. It's not that great of a game, but some of the voice samples are pretty much CD quality. And also, Panorama Cotton. It's just about as good as a Mega Drive game can get in both graphics and sound. Duke Nukem 3D on the Mega Drive is a great game that is a shame to be Brazil-Only. Also, Mortal Kombat 2 Game Gear and Donkey Kong Gameboy are both games that are stunning for early handheld titles. Don't forget SFII on the PC Engine. The graphics and sound effects are super impressive for a PCE/TG16 game.

Game Sack It's just that some of the dialogue seems stiff and scripted and the jokes/banter seems forced. In this episode, pretty much all of the dialogue that was dubbed over game play was fine, but the "skits" between games feel like you guys are acting a character rather than just being yourselves. I, like I'm sure many others, appreciate the attempts at humor but it feels a little weird when a guy goes from calmly talking about a game (in what I imagine is pretty similar to how he talks normally) to flipping out about Sonic being played on the SNES. I know lots of people derive humor from abrupt changes in mood/behavior like this, so it's hard to explain what exactly feels off but I definitely think it has something to do with how the script feels dishonest. Not like in the deceptive way, but dishonest in the sense that I'm not really sure if you're being yourself or trying to act according to an invented persona.
@GameSack

TurtleShell 720 The ending skits are us totally hamming it up just for the sake of hamming it up. I thought that this was generally understood. If we were just being ourselves the ending skits would be useless. Nobody would have any reason to watch them because they wouldn't be entertaining. We probably wouldn't even make them. The on-camera segments where we're just sitting there facing the audience are the only thing about the show that aren't scripted and are just made up on the fly. Actually we don't write scripts of the ending segments, either.
@DemonFang72

Yes, it's very obvious that you are "hamming it up" in the ending skits. This is the focal point of what I was trying to get across, because people generally find genuine outbursts more hilarious than people acting. "Fact is stranger than fiction," in a comic kind of way. Think about comedians, generally their content revolves almost exclusively around embellishing their "real lives" to the point of seeming believable (and therefore relateable) but still bizarre/absurd/hilarious enough to be entertaining. If their stories are too incredible, it loses all impact. It's not at all easy to make something as crazy and silly as something like that seem genuine, but do there are people who routinely seem scared out of their mind during every horror game they play/incredibly angry about every game they review/weird in every video they upload and become known/popular for this persona. Acting's not everyone's path to youtube success, but it's a path nonetheless. Personally, I've always enjoyed your ending skits. "It's so slow...." cracked me up in this one. But, I was trying to answer on behalf of the people who seem put-off by the skits between clips where the commentary seems to fall into this strange valley between the "casually speaking like normal" and "hamming it up." It seems it could be interpreted both ways, which is makes for a strange impact as a viewer. It's probably due to the fact you guys are nervous/doing the skits improv, so I'm not accusing you of anything. If I'm being 100% honest, though, I am actually not sure if Joe (I believe it is Joe) is ACTUALLY a Sega fanboy, or if his fanboyism is a on-going act/joke for the sake of having Sega Vs. Nintendo banter. I mean, I'm sure he enjoys Sega games, but is he really being serious when it comes to Sega? I just don't know, it's hard to discern sincerity. Anyways, just keep doing what you guys enjoy. I'm always looking forward to an upload from you guys.

Mar Anatha You asked me WHERE they were. But in a more serious answer, questions about why such-and-such a game is not in a particular video are by far the most annoying. To me it feels like the person asking EXPECTS them to be in there and doesn't want us to make another episode on the same subject in the future. You watch something we spend a lot of time working hard on and the only thing that some people can respond with is "Why is the game I'm thinking about in my head not in your video?" It almost seems kind of rude to be honest. The games you're thinking about have no obligation to be in this episode. Are we supposed to go back in time, take the existing games out and put these ones in? It would be better if you simply stated something to the effect of "Yoshi's Island would be a good fit for this episode or "Put Yoshi's Island in the next one!" rather than "Where is ______?" or "You forgot _______".
