They’re fairly different games, so it might not be the best example, but Mario Golf and Mario Tennis were much better on the GBC compared to their N64 counterparts. I love the RPG elements in the GBC versions, and the core gameplay is just as good as the N64 versions.

The Master System version of Global Gladiators is more fun than it is on the Mega Drive. Another "Master System beats Mega Drive IMHO" is Marble Madness - the SMS is more faithful to the arcade in terms of presentation and is easier on the ears than the 16-bit version. And to complete this trilogy, Krusty's Fun House - more animation on the sprites in the 8-bit port, less frustrating to play and it even has better speech samples!

6:45 the answer is that most of this version of the game is emulated. There's even a rom on the disc that you can copy over to your PC. It's in Japanese, though. Anyways, it's an emulator tailor made for Chrono Trigger that natively uses the Playstation's sound chip. If I recall correctly it bears similarities to the one in the SNES. But that also means the game loads everything in at the same spots the SNES version does. They didn't really touch the source code for the game, just some patching and whatnot, so that was beyond their scope.
@KopperNeomanАй бұрын
"it's in Japanese though" Yep, and the hotpatching process uses extra RAM that the PS1 doesn't have! That's why the English PS1 release loads so bloody much.

@ceticobrАй бұрын
It's not emulated. "The ROM in the PSX CD is just a very unique way to hold game data; it's NEVER executed. The Chrono Trigger CD does not not contain an emulator, nor is the ROM emulated. Square wrote a whole new kernel for CT which simply opens the ROM to grab the game data, like maps, enemy data, and scripts but doesn't execute the RPOM itself. If you look in the FF6 PSX CD and do a compare with the SNES ROM you will find that that CD contains the ROM too, but in FF6's case, the ROM has been "shattered" and split up into individual data sets. The executable data has been stripped. The CT ROM was actually there as a "secret bonus" for the Japanese market. It was put there on purpose." By the way, the older Steam/Android versions of Final Fantasy VI done before the pixel remasters do something similar. They contain the GBA ROM, but don't execute (emulate) the code inside it. They will only use it to get game data, such as enemy stats and placement, text etc.

the reason why there's loading on chrono trigger is just that in the SNES the game code worked like that because you can load things really fast on flash memory. even minimal things you try to read from disk takes a while because the CD has to spin. if they were to change that they'd have to remake the whole game, probably, which is something they wouldn't wanna do for a cheap port.

I think this is my new favourite idea for an episode. Its a little counterintuitive in a way, since you'd expect more powerful hardware to allow for a better game, but this shows that isn't always the case. Also, any time _Batman: Return of the Joker_ gets brought up I'm happy. Although, I can't help but notice that at no point in the footage does Batman use the charged weapon. Just a couple weeks ago Matt McMuscles played the same game and he never used the charge either. Do people not know that you can hold down the B button to charge your attack like later _Mega Man_ games? It's kind of an essential element of gameplay, like holding B to run in _Super Mario Bros._

How did this happen, you may ask? Simple. The English version of PS1 Chrono Trigger decided to task the PS1 with hotpatching the Japanese ROM, rather than simply using the English one. The emulator the system used to run the game had a small enough RAM footprint to load the entire game ROM and SRAM into the PS1's memory banks, but just barely. Adding a patch to the mix pushed it over the edge and forced long loading times.

The Wii version of Rodea controls beautifully, you're crazy lol. It's a great example of what the Wii was truly intended for, no need for a nunchuck, just one hand on the remote and you can easily fly anywhere with full freedom, and perform any other action you need. And do you seriously get wrist pain just from wobbling your hand around slightly? You look spry for a 95 year old I must say. Also, the Wii version's graphics are objectively superior in every way except resolution. It's incredible how ugly they made the WiiU port look (compare 30:33, holy crap). I don't know how they even managed. Just goes to show that tech specs barely matter at all, it's 90% art.

@PowerPandaModsАй бұрын
I wish nunchuk had been an option though. Moving the camera with the d-pad was tough, and for a game where you need to be able to click on a surface to fly there, you needed to move the camera A LOT! There were so many times I died because I was about 5 feet short of a platform (usually because it took me so long to move the camera), and once you're under a platform, there's basically no way to get on top of it. I would not call these "beautiful controls".
@sdf434-pp8jdАй бұрын
@@PowerPandaMods Idunno man I never had a problem with the dpad camera controls. Maybe I just have long thumbs, lol. As for the problem you're describing with the platforms, I've never had that issue even after 100%ing the game, and (copypasting some of this from another comment I made to Joe) I'm wondering if it was made more difficult for you because you didn't know you can control the direction you launch into after locking on a target, by the direction you swing the wiimote? That in combination with the pointer makes these "beautiful" controls to me lol. To clarify a bit more how it works: say for example you're on the ground, and you want to fly to a destination right in front of you. You lock on with the pointer, then swing upward -> first you'll fly straight up, and THEN arc forwards toward your goal. This works in the air too, and in all directions. You can very smoothly navigate around obstacles like this, for example if you want to arc left or right around a pillar to get to a destination behind it. This makes it practically impossible, as far as I remember, to get in a situation like getting stuck under a platform. You'll notice in the video that Joe doesn't do this, he just "waggles" randomly so he smacks into everything constantly. But to be fair, I don't think the game ever explains this mechanic? I'm not sure, it's been a long long time. But yeah, there's just a purity to have all that power just in the wiimote. It totally feels like this is how the Wii was intended to be used (when the console was first revealed they only showed the Wiimote on its own after all), and the nunchuck feels like it was just a concession to traditional game design, like the classic controller.

The ct and ff ports onto the psx from snes were torture. Your loading times in ct on psx were lightning fast compared to mine. Even the battle animation in ct and ff6 were noticeably slower. If you’d never played dm on SNES, you might not notice. Maybe. But the rhythms of gameplay in those games are ingrained into me, and the psx versions were sadistic torture- even before factoring in load times.
@MagisterHamidАй бұрын
Regarding Chrono Trigger. The best version is actually on Nintendo DS. You get the anime cut scenes but no loading times. My preferred way is playing the DS version on a Wii U hooked up to a CRT.

I actually prefer the ps1 version

I think it's better on the Snes hooked up to a crt

And the game is complete on the DS, with Beyond Time's Eclipse area and Dream Devourer boss, completing the story of Magus and Schala

Chrono Trigger was the first RPG I replayed many times. The game was definitely a turning point for old SquareSoft.

Game Sack nails it again with this deep dive into how sometimes weaker consoles can actually offer a better experience! 🎮 It’s crazy to think that nostalgia and quirky technical reasons can make older systems more fun to play on. The PS1 Chrono Trigger version with its emulation magic really stands out as a prime example. 💥 I can’t be the only one who loves the charm of these "less powerful" versions that give a unique twist to classic games!

errrrrmmmmm, have you played the 32X version of Virtua Fighter on _actual_ hardware? As it's the ONLY game I legally, physically, have in my 32X library, I SWEAR the samples are more crystal clear than 'depicted' on this compilation. Apologies for bringing this oversight up, but my experience cringed at your calling the digital sound fuzzy based on this rendering thereof... :/
@GameSackАй бұрын
Yes I have it. Compared to the Saturn samples they are a bit fuzzy, especially when you play the games back to back. Certainly not BAD or anything.

YES! Rearrangement music sounds better (in almost every case) graphics looks fantastic with bright colors and less dithering! And game have additional content and save ram feature as well!

cover Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories. Not only is it completely different on ps2, being just the first game's gameplay with the card system instead of gameplay specifically designed for the cards, but they also made some writing changes that make the story not flow as well which is uber important to that series
@nintyfan1991Ай бұрын
Oh, the moment I saw "Mega Man", I had a BAD feeling... but sighed seeing it was Wily Wars. I HATE that port. Not even the disliked Anniversary Collection (most especially the GCN version) pissed me off anywhere near as much. I played the Genesis Mini version and when M2 couldn't save that version. To date, I'll never understand why a lot of MM fans online defend Wily Wars. Is it because America initially missed it?

I would love to see what you think of MegaMan: The Sequel Wars. I love all the new features, playable ProtoMan and Roll being at the top of my list, but the music, man, the MUSIC. Some of the tracks were done by Savaged Regime, and he’s probably the best Genesis composer out there right now.
@bland9876Ай бұрын
I could see people arguing that the Game Boy Advanced version of a Super Nintendo game is worse just because of the screen crunch even though the Game Boy Advance is supposedly 32-bit and the Super Nintendo was 16-bit.
@mlodszyczapnik7684Ай бұрын
Mega Man: Wily Wars did have a save feature, but in the US this game was only available through Sega Channel, so each time you turned the power off, the game got wiped off from the console, thus if you wanted to access the Wily Tower, you'd have to beat the three games in one sitting! Also Ninja Gaiden had a Turbografx 16 port, which puts the SNES port to shame
