The thing is that I used to go to gamestop as a kid. Thing is I went there. My parents never plopped me off there. I'd go in, look at the games, and budget what I could. I didn't talk to anyone who worked there unless I had a question or they talked to me. I'd use the demo kiosks only if other people weren't using them. I ended up becoming friends with some of the employees and would even help them sell games to indecisive parents because I was bored.

Yep I used to do the same. I remember the time I helped a younger gal who was having trouble selling a part on an Xbox one X Turned around from looking through some used 3DS games and was like "Xbox One X?! Oh yeah this gal sold me one last week, picked up Assassin's Creed Odyssey and Gears 5 and *whistles* damn good looking little console". The mom ended up buying it and the little gal looked quite happy she made a sale.

It isn't only gamestop but gamestop is the main retail place it happens. My parents used to drop me off at Movie gallery ( I think that was the name. It was a movie/ game rental place) while they shopped at Walmart ( the rental place was a built in shop at the Walmart). Later down the line it was gamestop they would drop me off at. Unlike some people in this story my parents never expected the retail employees to keep an eye on me and of course would only yell at me ( not shift blame to employees who had no business with me) if I wondered off. Which I occasionally would do once I got bored of looking around ( especially at gamestop when I knew my parents didn't have the money to buy me anything lol) and would go looking for them shopping. Working retail myself in the electronics section of Walmart we would joke we were unofficial babysitters since at the time we had a TV display connected to a DVD player where we usually played a new release cartoon on repeat ( we got tired of "let it go" so quickly lol). Parents would leave their kids to sit on the pallets in our action aisle while they went shopping. Luckily ( at least to my knowledge/ memory) we never had a parent yell at us for their kid wandering off. Though we hardly paid the kids attention anyways since we had so much other stuff we had to work on lol.

@@TheCommanderTaco Man my mom worked at a Movie Gallery. They'd drop me off at one too when they where around. The most I'd do is ask if they could put on the old DBZ tapes no one ever rented because DVDs where a thing. Sometimes they'd put on old Godzilla tapes. That shaped me so much.

I used to work at a Lego Store about 13 years ago and parents dropped kids off ALL THE TIME! It was the worst. Kids would literally get dropped off and then start crying for their parents after 5 minutes. Just like Gamestop, after looking at a few displays and playing with whatever we had on the floor, there is nothing left to do. It's a fucking retail store. We aren't going to open up a Lego set and start playing with your kids. 😒

People used to leave their children at the Toys R Us in my hometown. It got to where you’d visit and there were unaccompanied minors running around and bothering actual customers. My late father rightfully griped that the parents were treating the store like a daycare. The store closed in the 2000s, long before the company announced the widespread closures, and I wondered if it were due to people not wanting to shop there because of the children disturbing them. For that matter, I wonder how many other stores lost customers because of the same thing.

@JustYourRegularIdiot

Definately! One of my buddies works at a gamestop in a mall, thankfully there is a small arcade called Kokojoe. Every time a kid gets dumped there, he says the parents get pissed off when they return later and their kid isn’t there. And then he has to tell them they went to the arcade because of course, and it’s not his job to keep on eye on them all day
@bipbop3121
@bipbop3121 Жыл бұрын
Absolutely not. There isn't staff there to babysit kids, either. More activities doesn't make the parents any less negligent. This is why arcades all close early in Vegas, so parents can't leave their kids there overnight.

I remember when I was younger, my mom hated going into GameStop because she didn't like the vibe of the store. She would drop me off to pick out something from getting good grades or something like that. Then i pick out what I want and pay. I feel looking back it was kinda disrespectful of the employees to dump kids off the store just because the parents don't like video games. The things I see at retail really makes me want to treat employees with respect and they deserve to make a living wage.
@TheCommanderTaco
@TheCommanderTaco Жыл бұрын
I don't necessarily see dropping kids off at a store as disrespectful ( working retail myself). It's more when as expressed in this article where parents expect you to do something not in your job description or they don't intend to buy anything and leave the kids there for more then 10- 20 minutes alone. Especially when the kids aren't well behaved and just make a mess taking up time you could be using to get other tasks done ( assuming it isn't a slow day). To me it is more the latter. I hate having just zoned a spot to see kids wonder in unattended then proceed to make a mess and walk off ( usually either strip lights or funco pops they mess up).

Run down to the distribution center and grab a few?...then they stand there complaining like we owe them some kind of compensation...or they think we're lying to them when we check our iPhone inventory scanner and want us to physically go into the stock room to look...SMH...

I’ve been scammed by their employees countless times and been pressured to the point of desperation for me to sign up for the power up rewards. They nearly wouldn’t let me check out if I didn’t want to sign up. One time I paid for a preorder, they took my money, than said my card was invalid and canceled my order. I never got the $45 dollars back. When I bought my PS4, they literally opened the box in the store and stole the charger cord and basically said it wasn’t included in the “trade-in bundle” I purchased. Another time they wouldn’t let me buy an action figure because they said it was “recalled” which was not true, only to later see the employee buying it himself. They have lost my packages, canceled orders, double charged me, you name it. It is one of the worst companies I have ever shopped at and I wish so badly that they would close down for good. The only reason I am forced to shop there is because they have exclusive collectibles. It’s horrible

@@jat4651 I admit, it’s partly irresponsible to continue to go there for sure. The biggest issue for me is that I want the exclusive collectibles and when you buy them off the website there’s no guarantee you are not going to get robbed and never sent the item. So I am stuck having to go into the stores. But I only ever buy action figures from them. I never preorder anything (because they lose track of your order by never correctly logging it in the database therefore you will NOT get the game on midnight like you were hoping) Whenever they ask for a power ups reward I say no because it’s the biggest scam ever. Pay this ghetto ass company $15 dollars a month to get $5 dollars off a year and that’s it, no other perks whatsoever. I try to make it 5 mins or less, just in and out. But holy shit they are like the most annoying sales people ever. Immediately when you walk in they practically are breathing down your neck “CAN I HELP YOU FIND ANYTHING?” No, just looking. “OKAY WELL DO YOU NEED TO PREORDER ANYTHING?” Nope “OKAY WELL HOW ELSE CAN I HELP YOU?” It is the worst shopping experience of all time

This is not exactly the same circumstance, but as someone who works in a big-box retail store, I understand the frustration of having to deal with kids and young teenagers who are left to run amuck in the store. It doesn't help that we're right by an indoor trampoline park that closes before we do, and after they shut their doors all these unattended kids just storm the place like it's their playground. We aren't expected to "babysit" per-say, but kids and teenagers can make trying to do your job and help other customers (especially in specialty sales like clothes or tech) far more difficult. All the time I have to disable our demo sound bars and bluetooth speakers because kids will play explicit music or fart sounds over them, or yell at them to stop riding bikes from sporting goods around the store. The other night I had some kids trying to prank call me three times in the span of about 20 minutes.

It's a harsh reality but I can't waste my time helping someone when it hurts my paycheck everytime a customer like that comes into the store.

I feel like GameStop would be more successful if they either: A) Were taken over by/ made a deal with a big box store to be given a portion of the floor, kinda of like how you’ll find Dunkin Donuts, Subways, glasses shops, and banks in a Walmart. B) Went online only with a warehouse(s) to store their stock. Imagine a small version of Amazon for games and pop culture and you’ll understand what I mean by that. C) Do something I can’t think of.
@Iknowimadummy
@Iknowimadummy Жыл бұрын
A) wouldn’t work because it would limit how many games they would carry. Their business model is based on being able to sell new games for $60, buy them back for $25 and then selling them used for $55. A smaller store within a big box store wouldn’t have the capacity to follow this model. B) also wouldn’t work because then they would be competing directly with Amazon. One of the appeals of GameStop is that they have brick and motor establishments.

ya know i actually saw a gamestop by me that had a fairly long line. of course the reason wasnt because something in particular was released or that they got a wave of new customers or anything, no the reason there was such a long line was that they literally only had 1 employee in the entire store and it took over 20 minutes to check out 1 person lmfao

In the UK we have GAME (which does trade-ins and new products) and CEX (which only does trade-ins) and they are thriving. We only have a CEX in my town (the GAME closed down years ago) but in a nearby town there is a GAME, CEX and an independent trade-in shop all next to each other, and they are always busy (probably they compete for prices).

I recently bought a used PS5 controller from gamestop. It was a damaged controller, the The adaptive feature on the right trigger did not work correctly causing the right trigger itself to not work correctly. I told them I wanted to bring it back with the receipt, And exchange it for a working controller. They refused Ridiculousness. Because I did not bring it back within 7 days. it Was a secondary controller I did not open it immediately... They sold me a defective controller and would not even let me trade it in for a working controller. My suggestion to anybody attempting to buy a used PS5 controller from gamestop just don't. They do not know how to accurately check for functionality. At least with these daul sense controllers.

We had this problem all the time in Barnes and Noble. We had parents literally drop off their autistic kid who was non verbal in the children's section on the second floor and then go down the escalator to the first floor to get a coffee at the cafe and sit with her friends. And didn't see it as a problem because the bookseller was watching them.

I'm a GameStop employee who is underpaid by half of what I'm supposed to be making. I make 11 dollars an hour instead of the 22 dollars an hour I'm supposed to be getting. Also, I couldn't go to my grandfather's funeral when he died because we had pre-orders for Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury on the same day. My manager. although he's a nice guy, he said I couldn't leave because the higher-ups would get mad at him for breaking the rules and fire both of us. I thankfully don't work at a GameStop that's in a mall then because watching kids wouldn't be a part of my job. Also, I'm thankful that I have two email addresses instead of one so I can be truthful about my working experience at GameStop while staying employed.

When I was a child, there was a GameStop right next to my barber. My haircut would be super fast, my dad’s a bit longer since he got a haircut AND a hot shave. Once in a blue moon my dad would give me $20 bucks and say “You’ve been a good kid, go buy yourself a game.” So I would go next door to GameStop and browse games to buy for my PS2 (yeah it was a loooong time ago). One time I went into the empty store (I was 9 years old at the time) and an employee working the desk looked at me and rolled his eyes, didn’t say anything tho. I went to the shelf, picked out a used copy of Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex, went to the counter and paid. I think the guy was surprised I wasn’t running like a maniac around the store and being stupid, but my dad said if I acted like a moron in public he’d take my PS2 lmao. Another time, I wanted to buy a copy of Resident Evil 4 (I was 10 and had no idea about the ratings system and how they couldn’t sell me the game since I was young). I went in, picked out the game and brought it to the counter. The guy was polite and explained to me that I couldn’t get it without my dad present, and I could see he was relieved when I didn’t throw a shitfit about not getting the game. I went back a few minutes later with my dad and he got me the game, but only because I was patient and didn’t give the GS employee a hard time LMAO

Back in 2004 I had this happen, but it was back when GameStop and EB Games were separate. I worked in a richey area EB. One morning a lady brought her 2 kids in and said: be good, I'll be back in about an hour. I'm going to birkdale. That shopping center was miles away from my store. I said don't bother coming back here to get them, just go to the police station, that's where they'll be because what you are doing is child abandonment and police don't take kindly to that. Needless to say, she took the kids and I never saw her again. This was back when we had demo stations for Xbox, PS2, and GameCube in the stores, and God forbid we turned them off....
