What I don't understand about the Gears of War games is that you can hide behind a corrugated tin wall and high-powered rifle bullets won't go through it, but bullets will go through body armor designed specifically to protect you from bullets.

Yeah, that's pretty inconsistent. It's like Kilzone, where the Helghast has perfect aim yet their weapons are so inaccurate when the player gets ahold of them.

ChestOfDoom seems like alot of people praised it. So good luck with your statement. And also, the reason why I said" it's a game" is because the part when this dumbass stated about bullets going through armour but not walls... again it's a game, things aren't ment to be real. Gtfoh.

+TheJackFroster Well Kane and Lynch 2 is fresh on my memory, and it has been a couple of years since I finished it. Even though the gameplay is flawled, the scenes and situations of the game make me rember them. This scar on my memory I believe is the same scar Yahtzee has (sweaty buttocks).

I believe Gears of War Ultimate was more or less remastered for true fans of the series, as it is a cult classic, Gears of War 1 was my childhood on the 360, and in my opinion i was more than excited when i heard it was being remastered (especially adding extra content that was only available on the PC version to let original players finally experience it). All in all this is just a game either you love it or hate it.

Cover based shooting can be decent, if you have the right way to do it, the right AI and patience it's fun. Look I may get attacked by plastic spoons for saying this but the divisions combat is great fun, i like how when the enemies don't actually know you're moving around and they keep shooting that one spot you were at, for all it's faults the division is fun in some ways.

Totally agree with the point about higher difficulty = enemy gets more health/you get less health, that's it, and the devs call it a day. It's lazy as fuck. Goldeneye and Perfect Dark had an interesting way of adding onto that model by extending the mission and adding more objectives to complete depending how high the difficulty is. A little creativity like that could go a long way.
@Carlisho
@Carlisho 7 жыл бұрын
Corky64 I know right. Also I loved The Last of Us for that reason. On the higher difficulty you lose the super op and totally unnecesary power of "super hearing" more like "see everything through walls" bullshit, and the enemies were more unpredictable, always moving around and even flanking you. It was a way more immersive experience and way closer to realisim like the E3 demo actually told us it was going to be.
@nieildilsonsouza4747

mass effect 2 is another one to ride the lazy train. on insanity difficulty you deal less damage, take more damage and enemies have a shitton of health and damage. just fucking ridiculous, you need to waste alot of minutes glued to the wall because 12 headshots from a anti materiel rifle only takes 30% of a pissweak enemy... not to mention that some missions impose time limit as well...
@goa141no6
@goa141no6 6 жыл бұрын
Corky64 Actually i liked, the core of the game is a reward-system, Locust take a lot to kill unless you flank or use shotgun/chainsaw and enemies push back on other words zone control. Gears of war 1 and 2 campaign is basis on push for zone control, the 3rd lack of this feature thanks of their "open escenarios".

Killing floor 2 is a great example. Enemies gain entirely new abilities at higher difficulties, and visually distinct 'super' version of basic enemies get added into the mix.

It's worth noting that Goldeneye and Perfect Dark came out in 1997 and 2000 respectively. So why is it taking so fucking long for developers to learn how to do difficulty right? Trick question: because it requires _effort,_ of course!

Another thing we (or at least, I've) learned is that 3rd person cover based shooting is somewhat flawed. Like I've played Spec Ops: the Line and Uncharted and I've found that often your character's body (most likely his head) will get in the way of your view. So an enemy will be off to your left so you won't be able to see him because the protagonist's head is in the way. Then of course there are the melee enemies who will circle around you and attack from behind. And aiming is kind of moot at that point because the camera will be trying to compensate for the wall you're pressed up against, so it will zoom in even closer to the character's head. All in all, Killzone was better functionally, if only because it was 1st person instead of 3rd.

Halo1 - first time I played it I just HAD to finish it through, it was that cool and addictive. After a while I got tired of it but that first time was totally captivating. Gears of War - first time I played it I had absolutely zero idea why I was supposed to care about the plot or the characters, I didn't like the gameplay, and the enemies looked just like my mates. I got immediately tired of it and never bothered getting past the 3rd chapter.

I can't believe that everyone failed to understand the joke with Rudolph Hess. Absence makes the heart grow fonder - Hess tried to broker a peace with Britain and was captured, and spent the rest of the war in custody and then served more than 40 years in Spandau. He basically missed the rest of his life (absence) and he took his life at the age of 93, where he just couldn't take it anymore.

I always like it when there are more than 3 difficulties, honestly. I'm always the person that plays on the second-to-hardest setting, because it provides the catharsis of having to master the game's design without making every checkpoint a session unto itself for it's brutality. The second point is a definite agreed though. I hate lazy games that bump difficulty with nothing but unfair stat de-balances to make sure nothing goes in your favour. Something like Tales of Graces F gets away with it just barely, because they dangle the carrot of better item drops and during the hardest difficulty, provide a counter-balance that doubles damage given by abusing an enemy's weakness, so they give you a reasonable insentive to punish yourself and it's something easilly toggleable, so you're not necessarilly fucked when choosing a higher difficulty.

I think the problem i have with Gears of War (aside from ZERO weapon variety) is the fact that, like Yahztee said, theres very little you can do to be proactive since its so linear. They have AMAZING "defend a point" segments because that's all about cover, defense, vantage points, and teamwork to fend off a horde. But its so linear that to assault a place always feels like you're taking the hardest possible route. If you're in a big open arena area you have the fun of sneaking up to the side of the enemy position to flank them, but otherwise its just slooooooowly moving forward. I LOVE the cover mechanic but theres just not enough places where its used WELL.

I have to agree with cover being a better stealth mechanic then combat, in combat it becomes a battle of who can shoot the guy about to go down to reload or trying to hit the edge of a hitbox sticking outside the cover.

masseffect did cover shooting pretty well in that it was not mandatory to succeed running and gunning was just as viable as popping in and out of cover and in many cases it was more viable (boss enemies in masseffect3 im looking at your teleporting instakilling asses)

I think the four difficulty arrangement is better translated to 'easy, medium, hard, extreme', so if you're like Yahtzee, lean toward "medium A" rather than "medium B".

That first bit is so true. What the hell happened to linear shooters? I like linear shooters, sometimes I just want a nice simple game with polished gun mechanics and flashy graphics. I don't want every game to be open world and cinematic like so many games that come out today. I can't believe I'm saying this but I miss linearity, I'm just so tired of generic sandbox games. Wolfenstein the New Order is pretty much the only solid linear shooter we've had in the past couple years, and I adored it. The 2 generic gameplay styles that have taken over is this Ubisoft sandbox template and this wishy-washy 3rd person stealth shooter. Can I just have a game where the goal is to shoot things without the game guilt tripping me into using nonlethal options with a contrived moral choice system. Or a game that I can beat in a few hours instead of playing for a few hours and then getting bored with generic sandbox activities. Holy shit, I still can't believe I'm saying this but I just want more games that are nice and simple.

Uncharted's set pieces distracted from the less-than-simplistic playstyle, but at least now they give you an option to stealth. Or at the very least the illusion of stealth.

Gears of Wars crutch is that the cover isn't something you should be hiding behind, rather it is a slingshot you to propel you shotgun first directly into the enemies face. Because you run faster when you're sliding into cover. Flanking and good old blitzkriegs is the crutch of Gears, and I don't think Yahtzee ever figured that out.

+ASpace Ostrich Well he DID say he didn't spend enough time to get "autistically good"...though I figured that out the first time I played through and spent most of my time shot-sliding into Locusts like a lethal rockstar performing an epic solo with a Gnasher instead of a guitar.

Here's the thing there's something called dominant strategy when the player finds a way to use a weapon of mass destruction in a simple click or a way to cheat the game THE WILL USE IT so that's gow crutch

Except as he clearly stated, he had trouble on anything other than the second lowest difficulty, and many fights took a long time because he couldn't seem to beat them by just sitting there and popping up. It's not a FOO strategy if it doesn't work very well, because it isn't optimal. The developers should have made the game highlight how powerful flanking and "wallbouncing" was in the early missions though. Would improve the experience for quite a few people.

I know you're obviously not a fan of cover shooting, but I highly recommend Rainbow Six Vegas. The first game, more than its sequel. It actually makes cover shooting really intense by blending it with first person shooting. Try it if you want. I think you'd like it.
