I just finished my install. This video was a huge help. Thank you so much for taking the time to make it. That back pick up tube bolt is a S.O.B. to get to. I had to bend a wrench just like you did. I loosened the bolt a little and then tied some string to it so it couldn't fall into the oil pan. To put it back in I wrapped bailing wire (about 1.5 wrap) around the threads to hold it while I used my bent wrench to start it. I guess a magnet works too, but I didn't have one skinny enough.

a string wrapped around the lower bolt between the head and washer will allow you to hold it in place and have much better access to the head for a micro wrench. once it is a few threads in just pull the string and continue. the magnet blocks way too much space. you only need it to place the bolt then rely on the string.

When you rotate the crank after everything is timed, is it normal for the timing tensioners to fully compress and then decompress? I am having that happen right now and not too sure if it is normal because when the tensioners compress, there is a lot of slack in the chain. I put everything on and started the engine and I could hear the chain hitting the passengers top timing guide, or at least that is what it sounds like.

Richard Blythe yes it’s the harmonics from banging off the rev limiter that are the biggest cause for the failures. Main reason my shift points are at 7400 rpm but my rev limiter is set to 7800. So I don’t have a chance to bounce off it. But in a manual sometimes you get there in a hurry like you said especially in a high hp F/I application. I just followed your procedure on my Mustang, but failed to watch it through to the end before actually doing the steps. BIG MISTAKE!!! While re-installing the passenger-side primary chain, the video skips (what seems to me to be) a CRUCIAL step, i.e., rotating the crankshaft a full 360 degrees BEFORE putting it into the 5-o'clock position. I followed the steps as they are presented - I only rotated the crankshaft enough to get into the 5-o'clock position as shown in the video, then installed the chain, tensioner, guides, etc. Then, with both chains on, I rotated the crankshaft a complete turn to make sure everything was still in position. The colored links on both chains are on their respective timing marks on the crankshaft and camshaft pulleys. But since I did not rotate the crankshaft a full 360 degrees before installing the passenger-side chain, I must assume that the left set of pistons is not sync'ed properly with the right set of pistons. I have not yet installed the timing cover, so I can correct this situation fairly easily - but I'm at a loss on the correct procedure to follow now that the camshaft pulleys are no longer in the positions where I started. (Also, I'm not sure if I damaged the engine - i.e., crashing a valve into a piston! Do you know if this is a non-interfering engine?) Can you PLEASE provide me with instructions on how to recover? I'm assuming the the driver-side chain is OK, i.e., does not need to be removed. But I assume I'll need to remove and re-install the passenger-side chain, and will need to rotate the camshaft pulleys to a certain position first. Also, how can I know for certain that the end result is correct? All the spark plugs were removed before I started the removal - can I put equal-length dowels into each piston (through the spark plug holes) to see that all 8 pistons are in their proper positions? What positions should they be in? PLEASE HELP!!! (BTW: you really should modify the video to make it clear at that step that the viewer should not do the step until viewing the final minutes of the video where you announce the correction.) Thank you!

Could you briefly explain why you rotate the crankshaft one whole revolution clockwise and then continue clockwise to the 12 o’clock position prior to doing the right hand side timing chain? Why don’t you just rotate the keyway counter clockwise from the 5 o’clock position to the 12 o’clock?
@SpeedAddict7316 жыл бұрын
Tyler Anthony Ford doesn’t want these engines rotated counter clockwise. It has to do with how the tension is on the chains. I go by the book when I’m showing someone how to do something. Leaves less room for error. The reason you go one full revolution around clockwise to 5 and continue to 12 is to get the engine back to the original spot that you removed the chains.

@SpeedAddict7315 жыл бұрын
Matthew Pierce the gen 2 gears are stronger than gen 1 gears. But it’s kind of cheap insurance to be honest. The price of gears vs price of engine. Really the harmonics of running a 2 step or hitting the rev limiter is what kills them the most.

You’re making good power while using the factory style oil system; do you know how far people are taking it before needing an external pump?
@SpeedAddict7316 жыл бұрын
D Piazza the stock oil system is great. Don’t really see anyone doing anything external. Tuner is running over 900rwhp on stock engine and oiling system. The stock oil pump gears themselves get replaced due to chance of breaking causing oiling issues.

ron nie it’s insurance. I didn’t run them in my 17 and had no issues. But I would have felt better if they were in there lol. Just something to help you sleep better at night. If you don’t put them in and something happens you will kick yourself. I took the risk and had no issues.

the oil pump gears dont get impact from the side they get impacted on there vertical axis. they spin in the oil pump not flip. drop them virtical andntue out come is completely different.
@SpeedAddict7314 жыл бұрын
Jake burch yep, we were just seeing if we could break them. Even dropping them(which type of hit is never duplicated in an engine) they didn’t want to break. I ran stock opg’s in my 17 supercharged gt with no issues. But some aren’t so lucky. I still think two step or hitting rev limiter is what takes them out.
@jakesreef17304 жыл бұрын
@@SpeedAddict731 oh I totally agree with 2 step and rev limiter isnwhat brakes them. the shock there taking at 8k rpm hitting limiter has to be tremendous about of shock load. yea I'm going supercharged and I'm keeping the stock oil gears. I'm just not going to be hitting limiter and being a jackass with it. ya know. but great video tho.

How come nobody drops the replacement oil pump gears?..... the stock gears are fine up to atleast 1000 HP just don't live on the rev limiter that's what breaks them
@SpeedAddict7312 жыл бұрын
I would not trust gen1 gears to 1000. Gen2 or 3 maybe but I’ve seen people break those. One thing that some don’t think about is the crank sprocket. I recently was putting opg in a 18 Mustang and when I took it apart the crank sprocket was cracked. It’s more of an insurance thing with opg anyway. Oh and I’ve dropped a set of billet opg that I took out that wasn’t getting reused and they didn’t break. The drop thing is just to see if they would break. That’s not the type of stress that breaks them in an engine anyway.
