Ronnie Coleman goes through his entire series of injuries and surgeries dating back to as early as college.
There is no bodybuilding fan who doesn't know Ronnie Coleman. He is a legend in the sport and perhaps one of the biggest bodybuilders of all time. But his legendary success came at a cost. He is now just as well known for his series of injuries and surgeries that have plagued him in his later life. In our latest GI Exclusive Vault interview, Ronnie Coleman recounts his entire history of serious injuries starting from college through to today.
GI VAULT - is an extension of our GI Exclusive interviews. The difference? These interviews come straight out of the Generation Iron vault from the cutting room floor of our feature film documentaries. With over hours of interview footage that doesn’t make it into our final films, we’re now releasing them out into the world.
Bodybuilding, fitness, weight training - all on the Generation Iron Fitness Network!

It's amazing that Ronnie could workout for 10 years with a herniated disk! I had trouble walking to the kitchen and bathroom without muscle relaxers and rest. Working out was the last thing on my mind and when i suffered serious back spasms i was literally on my hands & knees crying like a baby. My two sons had to pick me up off the floor and put me in bed.

I don't care what Ronnie or anybody else says, him lifting heavy played a big part of his injuries. He can say all he wants that his injuries came from football & that his hip & back pains are genetic. When you lift heavy like he did all his life, it catches up to you. Your bones were not made to take a pounding with heavy weights for years & years. It's like a basketball player playing ball on cement for years, eventually as he gets older his knees will become weak & not be as strong. You have to listen to your body. Ronnie was obsessed with lifting heavy. I started lifting weights when I was 21. I lifted heavy all the time & I'm paying for it now. I'm 42 with bad knees from squatting heavy all the time. I stick with light weights now. I do 12 to 20 reps on every excercise, sometimes I do 30 reps. Lifting heavy all the time will catch up to you & it's more of a chance you will get injured.

This man is the G.O.A.T. But he wasn't very wise to push his body beyond its limitations. Reportedly he has a net worth of $15,000,000. That's good because he is going to need it when he's an old man. His injuries are really going to catch up to him. Healthcare for him is going to be very, very expensive. His quality of life is going to be nothing short of miserable. In pain much of the time and unable to move freely without some kind of assistance. Ronnie Coleman is great example of discipline, perseverance, courage, self-esteem, and self-confidence. But he is also a great example of foolishly not excepting the limitations of his body. GOD BLESS HIM!!!!

He's had 13 operations that have done very little to decrease the severe pain that he feels 24/7! He should've retired and quit weightlifting/ bodybuilding in 2006 when he lost to Jay Cutler in the Mr Olympia. Ronnie has returned to lifting heavy weights after each operation and he is getting around on crutches and a wheel chair these days. Always listen to your body & gut instinct. I've experience all kinds of different pain between ruptured disks, 2 fingers severely cut and hanging by the tendons and severe laceration on my forehead and back pain is definitely the most painful.

This seems pretty common for Mr. Olympia athletes, though. Look at Dorian. My husband's chiropractor advised him to quit deadlifting when he was 26 because of his lower spine issues. He continued seeing a chiropractor, still does once per week, and eventually at 33 he quit squatting because squats began to stress his lower spine too much. Some individuals are unable to load the spine with heavy weight, in terms relative strength, that is individual strength. He has met others who have retired deadlifts, barbell squats, and other exercises that are bad for THEIR spines health. You have to put your health first.

Maybe pain, is the body saying, 'enough', like when you have a virus, you feel weak, and should stop, full stop, as the body is diverting energy to fight.

take a closer at the momment he speaks after he took the first surgery, big ron believed that the reason for the other damaged disks had to do with the surgery cause the cut a big chunk of the disk and then the rest disks fall apart. He is right about that, the rest disks didn't handle as it should the big weight that ronnie continue to lift.

Considering his intelligence, the one thing he got wrong was researching properly on his condition. He should of seen a Gonstead Chiropractor, and gone to that route of rehab. The other Chiros were ignorant, better known as the flying seven. Fusing the vertebrates? Research has shown 80% of all patients experience what is known as failed back surgery syndrome. Never go under the knife for your spine for injuries like this. Extremely high risk and the spine is not designed to be fused like that.

Every human being has a SWL (Safe Working Load). Typically , the SWL increases as you approach your prime years and decreases as you enter your senior years. Exceeding the SWL can seriously damage your skeleton, muscles, tendons, ligaments, etc.......

This is why you never lift heavy every single week. Back Squats require carrying a lot of load on your spine just to do squats. Taking a break from lifting every once in a while for a week is a very smart thing to do if you want to avoid injuries.
